Share your Goofy experience!
Well I did get my Goofy medal but boy I KNOW we all worked for it...though I never did go to McDonalds for the McFlurry...someday I can hope I would be fast enough will enough time for that...nor did I get that beer in Epcot. To be frank, the hardest part for me was going through Epcot...by then I was really really over it. I wish I could have enjoyed that experience. I was actually doing fine for quite a while but hit the 'wall' at mile 21. Mile 21 was another long road of dark pavement and brilliant sunlight and still a lifetime away from Hollywood studios...in reality it wasn't that far but by then I decided I had had enough. I blasted Rhianna on my mp3 and thankfully I managed it...my body was fine, my legs were hurting, my feet were hurting but overall nothing major. I thought I would be in more physical pain than I was. It was then mental wall. Hollywood studios was nice but again by then I just wanted to get it done.
I drank at every water station, alternating between water and poweraid. Everyone was in a great spirit. We all had the same goal. I hope everyone finished and got their medal that you all deserve. Thanks everyone for all your help....advice that was heeded and needed. I am thinking of doing a Disney half in the fall but I want to do another full marathon this fall to prep for the Goofy next year. I had already decided, despite the heat and the 'wall'...that I was doing this again. I did wear my medal until monday but even today at Orlando airport, I am still seeing some medals around the neck..and why not? So I would love to hear your stories... Oh and the Balloon ladies, I met them! I was at coral H for the half and I was the last to cross the start line and not a minuet past when I hear voices shouting we had to move and I looked and saw balloon ladies! |

Short version.....
Satuurday, ran the 1/2 at my desired 'training" pace of 9:30 mpm. Felt good until mile 10-ish when my left IT band flared. I was dreading this. Finished the race and went back and iced, took it easy. Sunday, the IT band hurt from the very beginning--knee and hip. I thought about quitting for a mile or so--I was in a fair amount of pain, and didn't want to mess anything else up by trying to compensate for it. I decided to then run/walk--run until, in general, my knee felt like buckling or the pain was too much, then walk. I stopped for every character, every water stop, every medical tent (biofreeze really doesn't work). It was a mentally tough day, but I finished and saw a whole new side to the race. Eventually, when I realized I could finish, I got happier. I tried to chat people up, sing to the music, etc. Most people looked pretty miserable, though. The plus side of not "racing"--which is what I usually do--is that I felt fine fatigue-wise, during and after the race. And other than the IT band, my legs felt great. So I have my Goofy. Honestly, it's not the way I would like to have completed it, but it is what it is. Now it's a complete rest until I heal and then a very gradual running comeback. Maura |

M&M McFlurry John here
![]() Friday's 5K was a nice walk in the park with DW Saturday I left the motor home, parked in EPCOT lot, about 0515 and walked to the start for the Half. Went left and got in at the back of D. Felt good and headed out faster than planned. Spent LOTS of time on the grass passing! Speed walked first 9 miles then included some jogging since the knees felt OK. Finished in 2:15:10. Sunday I left the motor home at 0545 and decided to get into the back of H. Warmed up in front of Balloon Ladies and was very disappointed that when we came to the start there was no picture on the screen. DW was waiting in front of the screen in the pre-stage area and was also VERY disappointed that she did not see me or the Balloon Ladies. The race track and cars were great. First banking I raised my arms up like airplane wings and buzzed back and forth like a kid flying. Adrenaline was flowing. Second banking I walked to the top and slapped the top of the wall. Don't imagine many other racers did that. Right turn just before mile 15 got me down to McDonald's. People in line waiting to order and one woman who was already ordering, smiled and stepped back after seeing me and said "go order". I thanked all, told them I was stopping during the Marathon and might never have the opportunity again. Getting back to the on ramp required crossing at a light that was red and the police officer was letting the traffic turn so I stood there waiting. The woman officer by me yelled for him to stop traffic, he did, I thanked them and crossed with the McFlurry raised high in the air for all to see. Back up the ramp, left arm out to signal as I merged, got some laughs from other racers after seeing the McFlurry then onward. Hit a wall and really slowed down but things came back in HS. DW was waiting for me in EPCOT to hand off a 6" diameter medallion she embroidered that had the images of Goofy at 12:00, Mickey at 3:00, Dopey at 6:00, Donald at 9:00, 2013 in the middle then at the outer edge at 7:45 a 3.1, at 6:00 a 13.1 and at 4:30 a 26.2. I wore that around my neck holding the medallion center chest making sure all could see and passed the finish pointing to it. Jeff Galloway came over, shook my hand, I told him I was Dopey, showed him the medallion and he said he liked it. With the McD break I managed a mostly walking 5:17:56 time. It was a great weekend, will be making FW reservations tomorrow for 2014 and already started training for IMFL this past Tuesday. |

Our RV is a 2009 36' Bounder class A with the full bathroom in the rear and a half bathroom at mid point. Speed walking is not the same as Race Walking. R-W is much harder and technical. Dave, Windwalker had an excellent thread regarding race walking. I will search for it. |
