Buying different UY's.
Good morning everyone!
I am looking to add on some points but I'm wondering if I should stick to the UY and resort I already have, to keep things simple, or just look for a good deal and pursue it? Can anybody tell me the pros and cons of picking up points that are maybe at a different resort or a different use year? I know the whole 11 month, 7 month deal for booking. I'm more concerned with the use of the points with different UY's and trying to make 1 reservation. TIA for your help and advice!

With different UY's, you will get different member accounts. To make a single reservation using those points you would need to one of two things. You could either transfer the points from one membership to the other, or book separate reservations with each membership and have them them 'linked' my MS to make a 'continuing stay'.
With the same UY (resort doesn't matter), as long as the contracts are titled the same they can be added to your existing membership as a sub-contract.

if you "add-on", you would have to stay with the same UY ("add-on" means "add-on" to the current membership.) you can "add" additional points by buying a different UY but it's not technically an add-on. it's a different membership. so if DVC is enforcing a 160 pt limit on new memberships, you would have to buy a 160 pt contract to get a different UY directly. you could get a 25 pt add-on by staying with the same UY. Personally, unless there is a compelling reason for you to want different use years, I would really keep it simple and buy the same use year.

Really, thats whats at the heart of the question. I would like to try and keep things simple. Its enough trying to make vacation plans and look for airfare, on top of juggling multiple memberships and points.

I went into my search for a second contract (different resort from the first) hoping to find the same UY, but when a contract came along that was loaded and the exact small-ish size I was looking for, I pounced even though it was a different UY from my first contract.

Correct. If purchasing resale, let the agent know you are already a member. They should have a form for some additional information that will be passed on to the closing company and then to DVC to ensure that everyone has all the information they need to tie the purchase to your existing membership.

Two UYs means that you will have two different member accounts, twice the documents, mailings, and dates to keep track of for reservations, banking and borrowing.
Two UYs means twice the work. Can it be done, yes, do others do it yes, should you do it, not unless you have a good reason. Bill

We have three periods during the year when we can plan vacations a long time (>8 months) out, and they are spaced 3-5 months apart. Therefore, when searching for an add-on contract we deliberately looked for a different but complementary UY.
I like the analogy somebody made to checking accounts. Having two different UYs is something like having a personal checking account along with a household one. It does add some complexity to your life; it depends on you and your unique situation whether it's worth while. But I think adding a third UY though is like having a third eye; it doesn't really add any value. For that, the only reason to buy would be a super-attractive price on a desired resort.

You would need to either call and have the points transfered into one account. The points that are transfered will retain their original home resort and UY. Or you can book separate reservations from each membership. If the reservations are for the exact same resort/room size/view, etc, MS can flag them as a continuing stay so you would not need to change rooms.

I have two UY it really is not hard to manage them. But if all things are equal I would buy the same use year. However, if you can save yourself several hundred dollars by buying another contract with a different UY, I would go with the cheaper contract (Unless that UY was out of wack with my vacation planning).
