Taking night time parade pictures... we need help

Hi All,

I had posted this question on a different post section... I apologize...

Hopefully you can help. Our first XMas trip to Disney is coming up and I am struggling to find some decent "how to" info about taking night time pictures with my Digital SLR camera. Do any of you Dis'ers have experience with cameras and what I will need to accomplish my mission. Do I need a flash, increase my ISO, how do I stop the blurring when taking shots. Trying to time my visit to local camera shop but struggling there.

To stop blurring, you want a fast shutter speed. Do do that you have to pump up the ISO. I went flash free for lights against the darkness (they wash out and don't 'glow' if you use a flash) but I did use a flash for faces. The last parade I photographed was the Boo To You so lights were not such an issue and I shot it once flash free and once with the flash. Both have their merits and drawbacks.

A fast lens will also help. Again, I did one with my 18-105 kit lens which is F3.5-4.5 and the other with a lens that has a constant F2.8 (definitely the better option for flash free)

I also found that sitting in Frontierland gives you more ambient light which assists as they keep the lights on in the area near to Splash Mountain/Pecos Bills. Just make sure you are not sitting directly opposite it or you end up with blown out highlights in your photos - I had to move when I spotted this potential problem in a test shot.

Here is a thread that you might find helpful

http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=3017778

And another that is specific to MNSSHP which as you know, is very different, but it will give you an idea of how different photographers have very different approaches regarding flash and no flash and some of the reasons for it
