Missing one day of junior high for a surprise trip
I'm surprising my DD13 with a trip to WDW Jan 2-7. She's going to miss one day of school, Jan 7th, which is their first day back after winter break.
We talked about it nonchalantly one day regarding what they usually do the first day back after winter break. She said it's a pretty laid back day, teachers don't start anything new, it's mostly about crowd control LOL. Seeing as she's in junior high, she has a different teacher every period. I'm debating about whether or not to tell her teachers much in advance about an absence on a day where very little will get done. Honestly, my biggest concern is that one of them will blow the surprise. And if they decide they need to send her home over winter break with homework that no one else has... well that would blow it too. She's a good student and rarely misses school for illness. Anyone been in this position? I'm really up in the air with how to deal with this. |

If we were going to take them out of school for a week, the parents would probably have informed the school, but for one day - I would not risk ruining the surprise. Have a great trip!!! |

I really doubt they'd give you the work anyway. At our HS, lots of teachers have the kids get the work they missed from other students if they are out, for any reason.

I am a seventh grade math teacher. For one day I would not worry about it. If my students are out for one day they get the work from a friend (more than 2-3 days, they will need to see me to catch up). I probably would not tell the teacher. I promise no teacher would intentionally ruin the suprise, but it could slip.

![]() I'm 100% sure none of her teachers would intentionally tell her, but I figured it come out on accident! We've hardly told anyone, including family, because the more people that know, the greater chance of a slip! |

just remember to call the school that day from Disney to call her off!!!!
I would just call her in sick for 1 day, but like I said remember to call that morning or night before if they put the machine on the evening before. |

I am taking my kids out of school for two days in November for our Disney trip, and I don't plan to tell the school anything. I feel they will be fine and will have no problems making up any work missed. Also, I am a teacher and it doesn't bother me at all when my students miss a day or two as long as they can make up the work. It helps if they rarely miss school to begin with. Have fun surprising your daughter and enjoy your trip!

I agree, no need to inform the school in advance for a one day absence.
