Where is Rivers of America? I've never seen this and I've been to Disney a ton of times. Obviously, I'm missing it!

I would guess that at the time it was an easy and affordable way to make the ride look nice. Water looks much better than cars on a track.

It's the river you cross to get to Tom Sawyer Island and that the Liberty Belle riverboat travels on.

First, I appreciate those of you who offered insight into why water was used. I didn't think about how many of these rides date back to the 70s and 80s when technology wasn't as advanced.

Secondly, I also appreciate those of you who questioned the grumpy poster who wrongly assumed I was being sarcastic when I called out to "Disney geniuses." I was being 100% literal. I mean, isn't that why you ask a question on this forum, to get advice from those that know Disney the best?

Thirdly, and lastly, my Mama taught me that if I can't say anything nice, then I shouldn't say anything at all. I would think the same goes for the Disboards. If you didn't know the answer to my question, why leave a rude comment? I'm sorry you misinterpreted my question. Maybe next time, just leave the question answering to the real "Disney experts."

Oh, I certainly enjoyed them, too! I was just curious about the reasoning behind the use of water as a propellant.

It looks nice, boat rides are generally quite smooth too. Plus water is a good way to hide the way the boat moves. Because in most cases it's really attached to a rail and therefore "drives"through the water. (and that's even the paddle boat in MK!)

But at Disney they tend to hide such things. And it might indeed be the older rides that use this, technology has changed rapidly the last decades opening up other ways to propel rides.

Because maintenance is much easier without having to drain the water first.

All this is of course excepting rides as Pirates and Maelstrom where boats simply make sense, anything else would not work as well within the theme.

I really can't imagine Pirates, or Splash or Small World without the water. I'm sure that Disney has the technology to move cars without the water, but I am not sure the experience would be the same. The splashes and yes... the musty smell is part of the overall experience. Okay... sort of a nerd, but i would hate to see the classics start using some hi tech movement. There is something about boarding IASW and it wobling as people board.

Just so you are aware, I kind of went "what?" when I first read that line about Disney experts too. I believe you when you say you didn't mean anything by it, but it is hard to hear the tone of the words sometimes. It is easy to mistake poster's intentions sometimes. And I'm guessing your mama wouldn't think piling on a poster for making a mistake to be nice behavior either.

Btw, if you think this thread was at all heated, I do worry for your posting future.

Oh, I've been lurking around for quite some time, and I've seen how "heated" threads can be. I was just shocked at how the very first response was so unfriendly.

These are my best guesses! A reflection of the times and technology.

I couldn't imagine Disney without the water rides and that good ol' water smell.

Ugh!

Splash Mountain is one of my faves, but I HATE that smell, which I think is the wet foam under the squishy part of the boat (if that makes sense).

And of course, I hold on so my hands smell like that after riding and I have to immediately wash my hands to get it to go away.

Doesn't stop me from riding though.

I think the big reason is that the boats can be controlled very easily and slowly.

Boats and the water fit the themes of the attractions very well.

The other is that almost all people like the water and like to ride in boats...especailly kids.

However about 9 attractions on the water, in 4 massive parks is not that many!
