Thanks Alison. Those folks on the photography subforum are my teachers....and the best! (When we aren't talking about tripods, brands of cameras, mirrorless vs dSLR etc ).

The friend that I went with to the Gaol fessed up on Monday...she was spooked out by the night tour and had nightmares! I felt so bad....maybe you'll make it downunder sometime and you and I can go together!

The Royal Melbourne Show



September in Melbourne is all about the Aussie Rules Football Grand Final, hayfever, changeable weather… and the Royal Melbourne Show. This annual event brings the country to us city folk and I guess is akin to the State Fairs in the US. It’s been running for a while…the first show was back in 1846.



There were plenty of people around at the Showgrounds and rather than fight with the crowds, I decided that I was going to go see as many of the traditional exhibits as possible.

It’s all about the farm animals…..

From experience, the enclosure for the bovines attracts the least amount of people. It’s the smell.....and the cow pats that you have to dodge when walking through the place!












The poultry can be popular….there is a growing trend of keeping chooks in the backyard here.






As a child, we did have chickens in our backyard. My parents liked the silky bantams best.






I was highly amused by the pom-pom duck.







Call me traditional, but this is how ducks and geese are meant to look!








Thanksgiving is not big in Australia…so these turkeys have nothing to worry about.















This year was the first year that I’ve seen bees at the Show. I have a mild interest in keeping some bees at home….so I spent some time talking with the bee keeper. I need to mull on it some more to see if I still have the buzz in a year or so.







Without a doubt, the most popular animal attraction is the farmyard petting barn. Kids galore running wild and the parents very relaxed about it!

Pork can be such a nice tender meat….








And someday, these Babes might turn up as bacon on a plate somewhere…









Spring lamb is very tasty…but I’ve never been partial to lamb. Just the fleece!









I also stopped by the pets area. Completely overrun with people…but these two kiddies caught my eye.








The Bengal variety is one that DH and I keep talking about getting. It’s getting to the stage where the breeder recognizes us on these yearly visits. Maybe someday…

The Show also attracts entrants from all over to submit their best work.

I always go check out the cake decorations. These were the ones that I was impressed with this year. Keep in mind that these are amateurs…

I also took some time to marvel at the artsy crafty.

Rather fine needlework…






..and folk art and woodworking.

















But I really go to admire the quilting.

This one won first place.






The material was hand dyed by the entrant using natural dyes…and the stitching seemed like a heap of work!






I personally thought that this year’s batch of entries were rather good.


















I was particularly taken with this quilt.






Each individual patch was amazingly intricate and detailed!

Unlike previous years, I didn’t spend a lot of time in the food pavilion this year. With that many people in there, it was hard to see the goods on sale without bumping into another body or without them bumping into you.

However…..





























By my standards, a pretty poor food bounty this year!

The only times I've been to a Royal Show I've had a pony in tow or been specifically to watch a friend in a horse riding comp/display. I feel like I've spent enough time there to last me a lifetime I can't stand the crowds!

I also used to prefer the more traditional displays. Obviously the horses... showing, jumping, harness, whatever was going... Aside from that I used to love watching the sheepdog trials and agility. And the cakes are always amazing! I do love a nice decorated cake! And the photography... You should enter next year's PIO Oh, and the dairy pavilion for the free samples, although it was ALWAYS packed!

Love your animal pics, especially the cute little kitties! The Bengal is very handsome.

Your pics are stunning! I bet Marilyn would love the quilts, they are gorgeous. Your RMS reminds me a bit of the Big E exhibits, it began as a regional agricultural show and still has a lot of the components that the agricultural community love. I love that aspect of this now pretty commercial event.

I think being spooked is fun. Visiting your part of the world would be a dream come true. Take me to the Gaol and to see the animals and this would be me
