It's water under the bridge...but if i could lay claim to a franchise such s harry potter at its peak of popularity - then i'd be sure that my "one shot" that i had would score the biggest hit possible.

She probably would have liked to have disney do it...but not if they would insist on being in the sole drivers seat...as they always do.

Reportedly, she was worried that Disney would "A.A. Milne" her. So she took a tougher line. She also was not enamored with Eisner, in general (seems to be a common theme..a la Pixar). So she took a tougher stance.

I'm not sure you can blame Disney for not giving in. I don't think they could have made her demands work and still operate the place (and I don't mean just at a profit..but actually operationalize the things she was insisting on).

I likewise understand why Rowling went elsewhere, and took a slightly more considerate stance.

It's a nice promotion...something Disney does a lot of (promoting from within it's executive structure). It doesn't, necessarily, have anything to do with Cars Land coming to DHS. In fact, I'd say it very well could be the opposite...otherwise you'd just bring her over to oversee the Carls Land project, specifically, and not promote her to overseeing ALL the current projects.

That was my thinking, too. Imagineers go where projects dictate all the time. Kathy did an awesome job overseeing Cars Land and I'm sure the promotion is well deserved. But they didn't need to give her a new position just to get Cars Land into DHS.

In fact, she should now have a great deal of input on what will be added to WDW in the future. Have to wonder about her personal philosophy. Does she want there to only be one Cars Land in the U.S. or is it something she would like to see adapted for WDW?

Creative vision is the biggest thing I've thought the WDW executive team lacked...and they've lacked it for awhile.

IF she can develop a strong voice (and not get shouted over by the more financially focused execs constantly), this could be a nice thing for WDW.

But that's a big IF.

A truer statement on this board has never been spoken....

the WDW "executives" (as in they are "no power" puppets...with some exceptions every now and then) aren't in the business of using creative thought.

they are simply "profit guards" meant to keep the peace in florida and make sure nobody lets a cow stand on the tracks in front of the gravy train.

This notable imagineering individual COULD be the sign that things have changed in the swamp though...

there have been some "rumors" that there is some changing of the guard type activities going on in the disney corporate hierarchy when it comes to park development and future positioning....which basically is imagineering's sole responsibility.

The word...completely heresay...is that now that lassiter has successfully gotten his creative feet wet at disneyland and is asserting real control as "CIO"...that he is pushing forward an agenda to do the same thing at WDW...as in he feels an obligation to put an imagineering presence in florida that has teeth and stops the kinda piecemeal, unorganized approach that has gone on at WDW for too long.

Lassiter is...luckily...a true disney romantic. He is more cut from the old cloth than anyone else they got. remember he worked there in animation under ron miller...before the barbarians were let through the gates.

So...it could be that this is a first step toward "big developments" to come at WDW...but if so, its only a baby step.

A real creative mind wouldn't want any part of a cars land plant in florida...and some grumblings out of anaheim have indicated that the they don't want that either. Something different - distinct draws...

That would be a GOOD thing for WDW and all other disney parks. the end of cloning...or at least thought put into it instead of just making it standard policy.

We shall see...they need people with:
A. Creativity
B. Spines

- in WDW on the ground...and ones that aren't afraid to hold the line when it matters or get on a the corporate jet to L.A. and pitch a fit if needs be to get a point across.

In summary: no more tools (Weiss, Wallace, Cockerell, etc.)

Hard to have creativity win over bean counters. Hopefully that can happen. I really hope a return to originality/imagineers in charge leads to bigger profits, and a positive cycle

Just at DisneySea/Tokyo Disneyland last week. Very nice parks. Beautiful details. Food, not so good. Nothing there beats EPCOT, the Signature Resort Dining and V & A's. Also, the merchandise, I found not to my taste. The Japanese are a bit more "cutesy" than me. I just want a plain shirt that says, "Tokyo Disneyland." Just like the Hong Kong Disneyland shirt I have on now, that I love!

As of today, Walt Disney Imagineering has completed a change in structure and Kathy Magnum, a 30-year veteran of*Walt Disney Imagineering and a principle designer of the recently opened Cars Land at DCA has been assigned to Walt Disney World with the title of Executive Producer, Walt Disney World Portfolio. It certainly seems to be an interesting move and in my opinion, gives more credence to the rumor about Cars Land coming to DHS.* This will be another development we watch closely!

How long would Cars Land (either DCA or DHS) hold appeal? 1 year? 5 years?

The bean counters will be tough to convince to drop another $700 million if the FP plus is already bringing in dough...

That being said, I would love them to add it...just not convinced...yet

I agree...the cars theme has a natural tie in to California and I don't necessarily think it translates...

It is also a bad franchise. Because it sells trucks to boys...doesn't mean it's got the kind of longevity to it that they would look for in Florida (aka forever)...

And the paints not even dry on the first one yet (though I'm sure it's chipped and needs touched up)...hold on there, Newt...

But the bigger question is: why would anyone want the clone? It's in Disneyland to see - as many have pointed out. So if it's too far...then that really boils down to spoiled customers/ laziness.
If The corporate heads figure "we already built it...so we can build it more cheaply/ quickly..."
That is penny pinching...I know that it's tough to boil hundreds of millions down to "penny pinching" - but fundamentally it is so in this context.

So again...executives worth having should go in a different direction...accountants are a dime a dozen.

How long has the Tomorrowland Speedway had appeal? Its only in practically every Disneyland style park (except Paris?) and doesn't seem to be going anywhere.

Basically what I'm saying...Cars (Pixar) characters or not is irrelevant, the land IMO stands on its own as a very nice, appealing land. The entire idea for a land was BEFORE Cars the movie came out...it was going to be CarLand.
