College Program Questions Thread, Pt 4

My son also starts August 1. I joined the DCP Parents group on Facebook. There is a TON of excellent information on there. I highly recommend joining.

    College football playoffs/bowls

My son’s school is playing in the Famous Potato Bowl! All week we have been inundated with emails featuring pictures of literal bowls of potatoes. I haven’t laughed this hard in a while. Plus, the game is in Boise, home of the Smurf Turf, so we are laughing at that, too. Go Golden Flashes!

S/O How did you/your child search for their college?

We started by wandering around on any college campus we were already going to be near. It gave my son a sense of what size school he was interested in and also his preferences about urban/suburban/rural. At the beginning of his junior year we started discussing what he wanted to study so we...

I'm trying so hard not to be "that" parent. Frustrated.

Check with the other district!! The person you speak with there may have a very different outlook on how to handle his needs. My kids went to a private elementary school that is in a different district from the one where we live. When our friend's daughter needed an eval, the folks in our...

What do you consider a lot? Student debt?

The common wisdom around here is to take no more in loans than you are likely to earn in your first year of employment in your field. (teachers earn around 35k, so no more than that for an education degree, nurses earn 60K, so that's a good number for nursing school, etc...). DS 18 chose wisely...

Parents of Class of 2018 thread

My dining room is full!! Six big, amazing bags from Ikea, a bunch of boxes and tubs and a huge pile of food and decoration for DS' going away party this Sunday. We take him up (over? the school is west of us..) on Thursday. DS 15 starts school on Monday, so there is a ton happening right...

Parents of Class of 2018 thread

In the last two weeks, DS17 has taken his final exams (including AP tests) at both the high school and the college where he took three classes this semester, gone to prom, received two (small) scholarships for college, broke up with his girlfriend and GRADUATED FROM HIGH SCHOOL!!! I'm pleased...

    Water Bottles in the Park?

The first aid stations have filtered water thingies (think Culligan machines) that we use regularly. We have collapsible water bottles so they don't take up too much space in the luggage. The first aid folks would much rather give you water than scrape you off the ground when you pass out due...

How to make a good cup of herbal tea

I agree with everyone who said to let it steep a good long time. Also, you might try rooibos 'tea'. It is a completely different plant, so it might be acceptable to your church. I like vanilla rooibos. They are pretty easy to find if you google.

Parents of Class of 2018 thread

DS graduates the Tuesday after Memorial Day. An odd choice on it’s own, it is also the first day of finals for my freshman son. I’m more than a little annoyed that the school planned this conflict. With 350 seniors, I am sure we are not the only family with another child at the school...

Parents of Class of 2018 thread

Congrats! As far as the bike is concerned, check on Facebook to see if there is a Stanford parents group or a resale group. There may be a graduating senior who wants to get rid of his bike and can store it on campus over the summer. Same with other big things like fridges and microwaves.

So we heard from both schools. One yes, one no. So his totals are: 3 yes, 2 no, 0 decisions! We go back to his current first choice on Friday. It's also the least expensive and the best program for him, so my fingers are crossed that he really likes it and commits.

Parents of Class of 2018 thread

I'm not sure how I missed this thread for the last 3 1/2 years! DS17 is set to graduate this spring and we are thrilled/terrified for him. We are also not entirely sure how he can be 17 already!! He has heard from three of his five schools. He got into two and not the third. The last two...

    Mirena Users: Experiences, please

I loved my Mirenas. I got my first for my 35th birthday present. It was definitely uncomfortable going in, so if you are a pain person, you should take whatever you need. I didn't have a period at all for the first five years (yay!). I spotted a bit when I had the new one installed for my...

    Browns fans aye yay yay.

We got free tickets to the game on Xmas eve last year. It was the only game they won! I now consider myself the Browns' good luck charm and they will not win again until someone gives me free tickets! (Preferably club or box seats - LOL)

Anyone Want to Discuss Minivans (& SUVs) with me?

My Odyssey is celebrating her 15th birthday this month. With 179,000 miles on it, we are beginning the search for a replacement. I am not a 'car person' and I don't care what the darn thing looks like, so the minivan thing has never bothered me. I want safety and reliability. We are only...
