major accident on World Drive

all southbound lanes near Epcot on southbound world drive closed. A reminder to drive safe and stay alert! Detours expected throughout the evening, and bus transportation will be severely affected tonight traffic is already starting to back up to car care. People are trying to turn around in the grass but our bottoming out and getting their car stuck.

Last I heard, one person was taken to Celebration Health with non-life threatening injuries. It sounds like the SUV took out a support beam rather than hitting the main post directly.

There was also a wreck on the Epcot off ramp (where southbound World Drive traffic is being directed) which is of course making traffic worse. The car was blocking half the road, causing everyone else to have to partially drive in the grass.

Was at epcot and got home quick but didnt need world drive. If your there, avoid world drive south if possible.

A driver took out a support beam for an overhead sign, and closed part of World Drive for a few hours. A car accident is a far cry from falling apart.

And considering the rate of road-closing accidents in Central Florida, one was bound to take place on property at some point
I hope everyone is OK.
It's amazing there are not more accidents wth the huge number of out of towers, and non US drivers

What? If you are a good driver it doesn't matter where you are from, US or not. If you are a bad driver you are a bad driver, US or not. Nationality is totally irrelevant and doesn't belong in this discussion. But just for the record, this driver was US.

Not a criticism. I live in a high tourism area, and know that the roads here are very narrow, and have unseen hazards that local people are more aware of. There are issues with roads everywhere that make hazards potentially more, well, hazardous if you are unfamiliar. Factor in the additional risk factors of some people being new to driving on that side of the road etc.
Accidents can happen to anyone, at any time, and statistically you are more likely to be involved in an accident near to home, BUT, we also know that there are more problems here during the season.
No criticism or nationality based bias was intended, I was simply reacting to the previous post which suggested that accidents there are more rare than elsewhere in the area. This may be true, I was just interested, possibly surprised given the experience here.

I'm gonna have to disagree. I'm a pretty good driver but if I were to go somewhere where they drive on the other side of the road I would be a mess. Think Clark Griswold "Look kids. Big Ben! Parliament!"

Also this is a discussion forum. You don't get to dictate what belongs or doesn't belong in them. :thumbsup2

It doesn't matter how good of a driver you are if you don't know the area. More often than not, drivers who are cutting across traffic to get an exit either have non-Florida plates, or the rental barcode in the window. Add into that redirected traffic, and all sorts of problems are caused. And if you listen to traffic reports for the area, the attraction exits are where the problems always are. It's just a side-effect of non-locals.

Just 20 minutes ago as I was leaving property, the ramps onto I4 East from World Center drive (both leaving and coming into property) were completely closed because of an accident.

Everyone else is probably seeing it this morning, but it appears that crash was very tragic. A family on their first trip to WDW together. Both parents were killed, and their daughters (8, 13) were injured. Apparently a vehicle in the oncoming lane came over the center line and they swerved to miss and hit the sign? The article said a "tree", but it sounds like a sign was involved from what's posted here.

Anyway, tragic. Prayers for the girls and the rest of their family and friends.
