Wonder: Deck 2 Oceanview or Deck 5/6 Sideways Cabin

I'm still investigating this second cruise idea. For essentially the same price, I can get a Deck 2 oceanview or a Deck 5/6 Sideways interior cabin. We will be staying in an inside on the Fantasy for the previous week. I'm nervous I would miss the natural light especially without the magic porthole.

Thoughts? Can anyone share their experiences with rooms on Deck 2? The online reviews mention significant noise from anchors, but it's always hard to establish how much experience online reviewers have.

How about the sideways layout? It looks like the TV is on the couch side of the curtain and it would be hard to watch after DD goes to bed.

Thanks for any personal experiences.

Personally, I'd opt for the deck 2 oceanview. I prefer a window.

We've had sideways cabins in both our previous DCL cruises and we have another booked for our upcoming Black Friday (Nov 25, 2016) cruise. Needless to say we really love the layout since it seems more spacious to us. We haven't tried it with little ones so the TV issue may be a consideration. I had a porthole room on another cruise line and didn't find like it better than the sideways on DCL.

Never been on deck 2 on the wonder but have been on deck 5 and 6 in sideways cabins. Sideways cabins are great. We really liked deck 6 but not 5.

My first cruise was in 2564 on the Wonder (9B) and on the Magic we were in 6007 (11B sideways). A few thoughts on both cabins:

2564 was very quiet for us, but a great central location. We did not hear any noise from above or from any machinery. I liked the window and the light, but we really did not use it that much. I found that when I was seating on the sofa or the bed, I would only see sky in the window, not the sea.

6007 felt quite spacious with the sideways layout. However, there were two issues. Due to the side wall of the cabin being towards the hallway, I felt that hallway noise was coming into our room much more than in the standard layout. This was most noticeable with the cruise director's announcements. For us that was not an issue as they only happened during times when we were not wanting to sleep. But for someone who likes to sleep in or to take naps, this could be an issue. We generally did not miss the natural light in our room, but we did often put on the channel on the TV with the view from the bridge to see how weather conditions were. What we did miss was a space to sit indoors with a view. That was due to the fact that this was a cruise to Norway with cold weather and sometimes we just wanted to sit and read and on deck was too cold and all other lounges inside were busy with activities. We did not want to sit in out dark cabin to read. On a warm weather cruise when I hang out in a deck chair on deck 4 all the time, this would not be an issue for me.

We love being forward as we are only two adults and on the classic ships the adult things are all forward (bars and pool). So, for us this is a very convenient location. I think for families it might be less so. But then the classic ships are smaller and the walk to other places is never really that far. But the midship location on deck 2 on our first cruise was most likely one of the most convenient places to be at on the ship. The atrium was just above us and when we wanted an elevator, they were never crowded when we got on on deck 2.

Personally, I prefer oceanview, but I can do inside. For me it would depend on the price difference between the two. If it is only $100 to $150 more per person per 7-night cruise, then for me it is worth it. Once we are looking at a bigger price difference, I would be tempted to save the money and spend it on other things...

This is such a useful post! Thank you. You have confirmed many of the pros & cons I was mentally tallying.

Yeah, the price difference is only about $100, so I feel like it is fair to evaluate them as comparable options.

Decisions decisions.

Good luck with the decision!! One thing I forgot to mention: the sideways cabins don't have a split bathroom.

And I totally forgot to comment on your TV question: The TV can be moved to stick out to both sides of the curtain. But one thing that might make a difference for you: in the oceanview rooms you have the sofa on the window end of the room, so going from bed to bathroom, you do not pass the sofa. However, in the sideways rooms the bed is on the oposite end of the room from the bathroom, so if your daughter sleeps on the sofa and is a light sleeper, that might disturb her.

Since you have the inside on the Fantasy, I would say go with the oceanview for this cruise so you have experienced all different room types!

I feel like I should have written more. We found deck 6 forward much quieter than five on the wonder. Deck five forward seems to be used as a hallway for employees to get to a cm area so there was always traffic in the hallway. On deck five (forward and aft) there were always fans running in the hallway and there seemed to be a water leak issue. Musty smells too. Smells from toilet. We did notice more announcement noise in the sideways cabin like flossbolna but it didn't bother us. We are not big tv watchers so we didn't have a problem with tv location.

We just got off the Wonder, cabin 2050 on Deck 2 and we LOVED it. We sailed deck 6 on the Magic last October and it was also great, but for the view, I would go Deck 2, for sure! It was super convenient to get to dinner and the theatre and getting off/on the ship on either Deck 1 or Deck 3. We will definitely be booking Deck 2 again. I think the noise depends on the room. Our room was super quiet. We were midship, just forward of the midship elevators. Perfect location. I will book the same room again if I can.

Oh! That exact room is open!

I have not stayed in either so take my opinion with a grain of salt but based on reviews of deck 2, seems like there are a lot of folks that are happy with deck 2 and in my personal opinion I really value the natural light so I would go with deck 2

We have stayed on deck 2, three times now and have had no issues at all. I would not hesitate to book deck 2 over an inside cabin, even if it's on deck 5 or 6. I would review the cabin you are choosing or use direct feedback like @anricat has provided and pick your cabin on that. I've personally had 2588 (had some engine humming noise but no issues), 2030, and 2504 - all perfectly fine. :)

Enjoy,
Heather

I've done both, and I liked the sideways cabin better. That is what I will do next time, if one is available!

We sailed in a deck 6 standard inside (not sideways) on the Magic and liked it. Being on a center deck is valuable to us as we enjoy being able to trot up & down the stairs to and from the top decks and the lower activity decks, without too much reliance on elevators. We wouldn't be thrilled to be way down on deck 2. We've booked a deck 6 sideways inside on the Wonder for our Alaska cruise next summer and are looking forward to it.

We always choose Deck 2, regardless of the ship! Love being close to all the restaurants and lounges without having to wait for elevators.
