A WDW Family Follows in Walt's Footsteps: Our First Trip to Disneyland-updated 4/6 (DL Day 3)

Oh wow!!!!! THANK YOU for such great review of DL so far. Have really enjoyed reading it so far. I will hopefully be going on my first trip to DL in June 2017. I'm Midwestern senior who will be going solo, but am WDW veteran of over 50 trips over the years. Looking forward to reading further reports on your experiences. Always fun to learn new tips from others. Keep up the good work:)

Enjoyed your trip report so far! And your boys have such great smiles! :) We are hoping to go again in November, and I hope my kids will be as cooperative for pictures, even though they're younger. :)

Hello. I listened to a couple of the podcasts when they were helping plan your trip. I also think I listened to the one when you were back from your trip letting them know how the trip was. I love listening to that podcast every Sunday morning. I am usually a week behind.

I was considering doing the Magic Morning and heading to Fantasyland as well. Good to know it will be crowded. I haven't been able to ride Alice or Storybook Canal boats since I was little, so I was really wanting to get those in this trip (August).

I am enjoying your report so far. Glad you had a great time.

:welcome:

...and so glad to hear you like to listen to the DIS's Disneyland podcast also! I've loved listening to others plan their trips, and really found it helpful. It was so nice to receive their help & made a big difference.

About Magic Morning, we had much better luck the other days we did it, so hopefully it won't be too crowded for you. It's always worth going as early as they will let you in, I say. The lines only seem to get longer & I love the seeing the park at opening. So exciting. Hope you enjoy revisiting those rides in August!

Great trip report! You have a beautiful family!

:thanks: so very much for your kind words & thank you for reading my report! I promise to get back to writing. It's been a busy week and I certainly have been a slacker in keeping up with my writing. :sad2: That will be remedied tomorrow. Yay.

:yay::yay::yay: Woohoo for your first trip to Disneyland! I'm taking your "hopefully" as "definitely," because you should love it if you love WDW, as I do. And welcome to my crazy report! Thanks for reading! I really appreciate you chiming in here and it encourages me to write on, so that I can convince you to get there and quickly. ::yes::

:welcome: and thanks so much. My guys had a great time, so it was pretty easy to get smiley photos. They go through phases, like I bet a lot of kids do, when they don't want pictures much at all, or have had that funny super-cheesy smile :teeth:. I take pretty much whatever I can get, so long as they're having a nice time. I do remember when they were really little and it would be tough to even get them to look, let alone smile normally. That's okay, though...

:cheer2: And yay about your November plans. I bet late November would be a pretty time to go, because perhaps it would be decorated for the holidays. And hopefully not too crowded, but anytime is a great time for Disney, right?!

Yes, Disneyland is my "home" away from home!
I have never been to WDW. I am sure I will get there one day but Disneyland has my heart:love: Only 118 more sleeps until I am back:flower:

I understand how you feel! Walt Disney World feels like home to me, too. I do, of course, think when you try WDW you'll enjoy it too, but understand that when you love one park it is tough to sacrifice a visit to your known favorite place to go to a new park...

Enjoy your countdown! You'll be in double-digits before you know it. I love the anticipation and planning phase. :woohoo:

Day 3. April 15th (Friday)

We slept in (a rarity on one of our Disney vacations, to be sure!) today, because it was going to be our beach day. :beach:

The boys again ate doughnut holes and drank juice, and I enjoyed Raisin Bran in my awesome new mug.

After saying goodbye to Jeff, who was off to the conference again, we left the hotel, pausing to take a photo in front because we seem to forget to get pictures of the outside of our hotels on vacation. The hotel definitely has a convention-hotel feel inside, but I think it is great for families, too.

It was a pleasant walk to get to our rental car. At the end it looked like this, which I thought was pretty.

We arrived at the Alamo on Katella Ave., where a Dodge Charger was all ready for us (at a cost of about $30 for the day).

We had been advised by Mary Jo on the podcast to depart Anaheim at about 10am and return at about 4pm in order to avoid rush hour. We left right on schedule and headed to Huntington Beach for the day. :drive: It was a nice, easy drive with a dramatic ending as we were treated to a view of the ocean and turned onto the Pacific Coast Highway.

We found a parking space next to Duke’s, where we had a lunch reservation. We were so happy to be at the ocean!

I had requested a table with an ocean view, but also wanted to arrive early to hopefully ensure success. Duke’s was mentioned on a “Day 6” podcast show I’d heard. (Since Disneyland only offers a maximum of 5-day tickets, the podcast team regularly does shows highlighting different options for what they call “Day 6” outings.) We jumped at the chance to go to Duke's in Huntington Beach after hearing of it, because we had eaten at Duke’s in Waikiki two years ago and just loved the setting and the food. Thankfully, the Duke’s on Huntington Beach had a nice ocean-side table for us and the feel of the restaurant was similar to the one in Hawaii.

There were surfboards all around.

Yummy, warm rolls arrived along with my strawberry lemonade and the boys' drinks.

Our lunch was very good, except that I accidentally ordered fish. :sad2: Specifically, it was Parmesan & Herb-Crusted Opah.

It was pretty, and it had tasty breading and capers, but sadly it was still fish... By that I mean that my problem was that I don’t really like fish much at all. Sometimes I order it anyway if a restaurant is known for fresh, tasty fish, though, because I feel like I should do it. This is admittedly a poor dining strategy, so it is a little embarrassing to admit. My point here is really just that it was not Duke’s fault that I didn't like the fish. I guess I should just grow up and admit that I’m not a fish person.

After I was done with (about half of) the fish, I needed a chaser to take care of the fishy taste, so I had to order a slice of key lime pie. Everyone should do this at Duke's. Fish-lover or not.

Okay, the presentation is a bit perplexing. Why is the whipped cream and lime slice looking so aloof over there on the left? I don't know. But it was spectacular - the best key lime pie I have ever had!

The boys ignored my fish drama and enjoyed their food. Sam had a charbroiled cheeseburger. From the “Keiki” (child) menu, Kevin had pizza, and Benji had chicken tenders. Pretty standard stuff, but they said it was tasty.

The view from our table:

After lunch was over, we rented bikes and rode along the path next to the ocean. :moped: We needed to try two different places to find someone who had helmets for us to go along with the bikes. I know we’re on vacation and apparently people on vacation don’t really use helmets, but as they advised me on Makinac Island, MI, last fall when we rented bikes, the asphalt on vacation is just as hard as the stuff at home. Plus, I'm just careful. Maybe over-careful, but that's how I am and it doesn't look like it's gonna change.

We enjoyed the biking, but I think the bikes we got were pretty old and not well-maintained. A couple of us found our bikes strangely hard to control. The steering just felt loose and wobbly. This didn’t prevent us from enjoying ourselves, but did result in a shorter bike ride than we would have had if it was smoother.

After we returned our bikes and paid for the rental ($10 per bike for an hour, so $40 total), we walked along the beach. Kevin and Benji took off their sandals and played on the shoreline a long time, enjoying the huge waves.

Afterward, we walked on the pier a while, stopping in the little shops and seeing stuff like this guy, which we did not purchase.

Then the boys wanted to stop because they said it was too windy, so we left the pier and just sat for a few minutes and enjoyed the sun, the view, and the nice breeze.

We took a few more pictures and wandered into a few more shops and then headed back to the car, because we had to get on the road to make it back for our dinner reservation.

The ride back was easy. I pulled up at the Marriott where Jeff’s smiling face greeted us, and we all drove to Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel for the Beach Side Bonfire Dinner Buffet at PCH Grill. The boys were excited to see the hotel. A couple of them wanted to stay there actually, instead of the Disneyland Hotel. (I think it was due to the beach ball pillows.)

Up Next: Some Disney fun, as we continue with today's beach theme!

loved the quote the about the asphalt and Mackinac Island here in Michigan.:) Yep, that hard paved ground is still the same on vacation or at home:) Your beach excursion sounds like fun:)

Your beach day looked fun. Glad you found some helmets although the bikes weren't the best, you still were able to have fun.

I think it is funny that you order fish when you don't like it. I am not a huge steak person, but always feel I have to order steak if I go to a steakhouse. The key lime pie looks yummy.

Thanks for the tip on where to sit for fireworks! I was planning on watching from back there and now I know where exactly to sit!

We loved the beach! And we loved Mackinac Island. It was my first time in Michigan and we really enjoyed it there. (Saw the Henry Ford Museum also, in Dearborn, which was fantastic.)

Yes, the biking was still lovely & something I would do again, just not super-smooth. (Hope I didn't sound too negative.)

Funny that you do the same thing with steakhouses! The key lime pie was soooooo good.... Confession: I just had key lime pie again yesterday. Not as good, but delicious. If it's on a menu, I can't pass it up.

So glad it was helpful! Hope you enjoy it from there. It was an incredible view of a spectacular show. I have a good tip coming on viewing World of Color that you may like when I share about our next day at the parks. So, please stay tuned. :)

I'm in! Love the matching Chip & Dale hats- you guys looked like you were having a blast! I'm especially interested to read about your experience at the Minnie & Friends Breakfast- my family and I have a reservation there on the 28th!

Looks like a fun time! We rented bikes in San Francisco last year when we went and it didn't occur to us to wear helmets... (Just us two adults) My kids wear them most of the time, but growing up in a small town 30 years ago, I just never got used to it! I don't know that I've owned a helmet myself... I should work on that.

Thanks for reading Lauren! They really do adore Chip & Dale. My youngest wants to be Dale in the parks when he grows up & they can watch the Chip & dale animated shorts on YouTube again and again... and again.

I'm sorry I have not posted an update sooner! I realize your meal is tomorrow. Wow! I'm so excited for you and expect you will love it. Please come back afterward and let me know how it was! (I wish I were there right now! ::yes::)

I had a tough time deciding what time to schedule our breakfast, and we ended up selecting 10am, which worked perfectly. We were able to tour the park for two hours and then have a nice, relaxing meal. We met many characters (8, I think). I loved the variety of characters & the quality of their interaction with us. The food was great, too.

Nice! Biking in San Francisco sounds wonderful, but maybe hard work if you were going up and down those steep hills?! I never used a helmet when I was growing up, but in college I think I started. With the kids with us, I really didn't want to go without, but I realize that biking is more fun without helmets (obviously).

Thanks for reading, Sara, and taking the time to chime in! :flower:

Day 3. April 15th (Friday) - Part 2

We pulled up at the front of Paradise Pier Hotel and left our car keys with the valet. Thankfully, because we were having dinner at the hotel, we knew we were allowed to park free for three hours. The cast member who helped us was very nice and encouraged us to take our time and not worry about any deadline to return. We stepped inside the hotel to check out the lobby, and discovered Goofy with his surfing gear. Check out the anniversary bling on his board!

Hey, this place looks familiar! Of course, we had to stop for a picture.

We did a little hunting for Hidden Mickeys, and a cast member helped us find one on the wall near the entrance of the hotel.

We had some time to kill before dinner, so we walked on over to Downtown Disney. It was tough to walk by Earl of Sandwich (a favorite of ours at Walt Disney World) without stopping in, but we managed to do it. We then checked out the LEGO store and found these guys up above.

I could not help but be reminded of the Aladdin musical that Disneyland used to have, which I learned about early in my trip planning and had been extremely excited to see. Sadly, the show ended its 13-year run just three months before our trip, so this LEGO version was the only flying carpet we would see.

As we strolled through Downtown Disney, we spotted an a cappella group that the Disneyland podcast team had been chatting about. The group’s name is Vocal Trip and they were fantastic, but a bit hard to hear with the crowds. We had to stop and listen to them perform and were treated to a unique, peppy take on a few of our favorite Disney songs.

We returned to the restaurant in time for our 6pm reservation. The meal was delicious. There was a great variety of food offered, and the service was excellent.

I did not take as many pictures as I should have of other peoples’ plates. I think I was overly cautious about possibly annoying my hungry family members, and now wish I’d taken more. Looking at pretty food photos is almost as good as eating it, in my book. That’s something I certainly enjoy about reading trip reports here.

During dinner, we found some more Hidden Mickeys, even helping our waiter notice one in the carpet for the first time.

The only thing that was a tiny disappointment was that the restaurant was almost empty. There were only three or four small groups eating dinner at what should be a peak time. Of course, this meant attentive and zippy service for us, which was nice, but I worry that the Beachside Bonfire Buffet may not last in its current form if numbers don’t improve. Maybe families find the character dinner at Goofy’s Kitchen more appealing.

Since the restaurant was uncrowded, we wandered around more than usual admiring the fun details. My twins loved this. I think the photo makes it look like they are a (friendly) two-headed monster.

When it was time for the dessert portion of the buffet, I was delighted to see a large beverage dispenser full of liquid chocolate swirling around. I had heard about the drinking chocolate that is served at Epcot Food and Wine Festival, so a few of us grabbed little mugs next to it and have it a try. I thought it was fantastic. The chocolate was very rich, though, so rich that we began to wonder if it was in fact meant for drinking at all. The little mugs seemed to confirm that it was for drinking. Hmm… After a brief debate at the table, I approached the nearest cast member, who happened to be manning the carving station. He politely, but unfortunately, corrected me, saying that the chocolate was for make-your-own s’mores, “like a liquid ganache" he said. When he saw my quizzical look, he assured me, "You wouldn't want to drink that!" “Why are all the little mugs next to it, then?” I asked. “I guess because they're cute,” the cast member said. Strange. However, it doesn’t much matter to me what it is called. It was tasty and I’d drink it all over again, if I had the chance.

I later checked the menu on the Disneyland app, and saw that the item was described as a "warm chocolate sauce" for the S’mores Bar. So that is that.

Here's the rest of my dessert.

We spotted a nice backdrop for photos, so got a family picture. Love that our whole day had a beachy theme, and this restaurant was the perfect way to end the night.

But wait, of course we had to stop in the gift shop! We love Tangled, so anything Rapunzel is exciting. We considered this, but decided a picture was enough.

Fun luggage tags that I should have gotten, but didn't need.

I spotted a shirt that I would eventually order through the mail after our trip, because I couldn't find it in the right size when I eventually tried to buy it on the last day. (We always to a shopping spree at the end of the trip to get the Disney Visa discount.)

Our boys adore the TVs at Disney hotels in which guests can see the (mostly old) animated shorts, so we always have to stop. Loved the fun theming of the TV room at the Paradise Pier Hotel. Please forgive the blurry photo.

The walk back to our room was shorter than night before, because thankfully we still had our rental car and could drop it off at Alamo and walk from there. I’m sure it also helped that our feet weren't tired from full day of Disneyland walking.

Up next: We move to the Disneyland Hotel and spend a day exploring it to squeeze out every possible ounce of Disney fun and history. Yippee!

Looks like a great day at the beach capped off with a nice dinner! We spent the night in Huntington Beach when we went to California back in 2011 ... it was the first time any of has had ever been to the Pacific Ocean, so very fond memories for our family.

Very eager to see your Disneyland Hotel pictures! :)

Yes, we just loved seeing the ocean on our trip. Glad you visited Huntington Beach also!

We have only seen the Pacific with the kids, but someday soon would like to see the Atlantic on a WDW or other trip. Living in Minnesota with all of our lakes is nice, but the ocean is just amazing! The waves are so much fun. The twins could've stayed there playing along the shore all day.

I've been going through my Disneyland Hotel pics and am hoping to post an update in the next day or so. Such a beautiful place!

Day 4. April 16th (Saturday)

Jeff spoke at his conference at 8am in the morning on Saturday, so he was up and out the door early. The rest of us had a slower morning, eating breakfast in the room again, and packing up our belongings, because today we were going to be switching hotels. When Jeff was finished with his work, we – and our 11 pieces of luggage (including backpacks & briefcase, so not quite as crazy as it sounds) - got loaded into a cab for the short ride to the Disneyland Hotel. So very exciting!

When we arrived, a bellman greeted us and collected our bags and stored them, because our room would probably not be ready quite yet, as we had arrived before the official check-in time. While I approached the check-in desk, the boys jumped right into the cozy teacup chairs in the lobby that are modeled after the teacups in the Mad Tea Party attraction in Disneyland.

The tower we were standing (or lounging) in was the Fantasy Tower, and the Fantasyland theme was clear throughout the building, from the carpet to the lighting fixtures to the art on the walls to the shops to the (aforementioned) seating. I am a total sucker for fun Disney theming, so this was all quite exciting.

The cast member who helped me was fantastic. When she heard it was our first visit to Disneyland she prepared “First Visit” buttons for us all. She also gave the boys autographed black & white photos of Disney characters. Specifically, we received pictures of Donald & Daisy, Goofy, and Chip ‘n’ Dale. We know who the favorite is among those, but Donald is probably a close second. Everyone was happy about the surprise.

Something else unexpected happened next: we were told that our room was all ready for us! We would be spending the next six glorious nights in the Frontier Tower on the 3rd floor, room 2174.

We were informed at check-in that we would have a pool view, but in reality it was more of a courtyard view. We didn’t care. We fell in love with the style and comfort of the room as soon as we stepped inside.

And what was our first order of business once there? Turning on the fireworks on the headboard, of course!! The twinkling lights are accompanied by the playing of "A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes," and the combined effect was just delightful. I love that Disney added that extra little dose of magic to the rooms during the refurbishment that concluded in 2012.

Here’s a great article outlining all of the changes made to the Disneyland Hotel during the refurbishment: http://www.disunplugged.com/2012/02/05/disneyland-hotel-refurbishment-completed. Amazing improvements made!

Fun Hidden Mickeys in the carpet!

The TV/refrigerator/dresser. (We were a little disappointed there was not a microwave, but we did okay without it.)

Close-ups to highlight fun old photos of Walt Disney throughout the room. Loved the charming details everywhere.

Desk area:

Bathroom:

Not a pool view, but still nice:

Grabbed a picture of the guys on the couch, which would transition into a daybed each night for Sam.

We just loved the room overall. It exceeded our high expectations and was nice and roomy for our family of five.

Up Next: Lunch at an old favorite in Downtown Disney, the Happiest Hotel on Earth Tour, swimming, and a delicious tiki torch-lit dinner.

So glad to hear you liked the Disneyland Hotel. We are staying there for the 1st time in less than 3 weeks!

Our meal at Minnie & Friends Plaza Inn was amazing!! It was really one of the highlights of our entire trip. My nieces absolutely adored the characters. Chip was actually on a roll that morning in particular and we have a great photo of him photobombing our photoshoot with Rafiki.

I got a kick out of your story about the "drinking chocolate" that actually turned out to be ganache for s'mores. But why the mugs?? Very misleading.

Looking forward to reading more!

So nice to see an update :goodvibes

The pictures of the room are making me even more impatient to get there. I love staying at the Disneyland Hotel, it's just so magical to be in the Disney "bubble"!

I have never done the tour of the hotel but it's on our list for this time so I am looking forward to hearing all about it::yes::
