Affordable, Safe hotel between San Diego and LAX

We need to book a hotel for the last night of our Cali trip. We will be at Legoland on 7/19 and fly out of LAX on 7/20, so anywhere in between the two will work for a place to rest our heads. I am hoping for a Hotwire deal under $100. I came *this* close to booking a deal in Inglewood and then had the presence of mind to check to see if it was a safe area before I booked it. Needless to say, I passed on the deal. It seems like many other areas in LA are pricey. Is there anywhere in between San Diego and LA that would be more affordable and still safe?

Look into Garden Grove or Fountain Valley which is a little over half way. As you get closer to the airport
the hotels get more expensive; with the exception of the South Central area. Newport Beach/Costa Mesa
area is nice but more expensive. Anything north of the Long Beach area along the 405 is sketchy.

We stayed at the Queen Mary and felt very safe. They also take AAA for discounts as well.

What time is your flight? The last thing you want to do is fight rush hour between somewhere that isn't LAX to get to LAX for a flight. It's worth the extra money to stay in the LAX area. If you find a hotel with a free shuttle you can even return your rental car the night before.

All the hotels near SNA airport are in a nice area, with plenty of restaurants nearby. Most are immediately off 405 within mostly a corporate/office heavy area. City would be Irvine, for the most part. Irvine is about 45 min to LAX. Irvine is one of the safest cities in America.
