'Alice' flops at boxoffice

Aww man that's sad to hear. We saw the preview at Hollywood studio this past week and it looked cool enough.

I never liked the animated movie. Didn't see the first live action one (except a bit on TV once) and have no interest in the new either. Plus, I am way over anything with Johnny Depp or Helena Bonham Carter....

Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass as stories just never appealed to me (and I did read them when I was a lot younger).

I am betting there are a lot of people out there like me and that Disney placed their movie money on the wrong story.

I disliked the first Alice live action feature because it trampled all over the whimsy and (yes) the deeper ideas of the original stories.

It was the definition of cynical. Johnny Depp's stoned freak act + boatloads of CG effects + flimsy backstory = pure gold!

Yeah ... maybe once.

If you really think that Alice needs a backstory, it already has one. Look at the poem Rev. Dodgson wrote to the real life Alice at the end of the first book.

This comes to no shock. I would not be surprised if this movie makes less money then Tomorrowland. I would say that I am not a fan of the overall idea of remake of Disney animated classics into live action movies, I think it is just lazy. However, it is the way of Hollywood now a days. With that said, The Jungle Book has easily been the best live action remake and Beauty and the Beast may be the second highest grossing Disney movie next year. Yea, I think Beauty and the Beast could make more money then Guardians of the Galaxy 2 next year and behind Episode VIII. But sequels to these movies are just a terrible idea and they are making a sequel to The Jungle Book and Maleficent, I do not foresee these movies being successful.

I think it will be close but it's quite possible beauty and the beast beats out guardians.

As for the sequels to the live action movies I'm so so on them. I liked maleficent but don't see a need for a sequel. Now Jungle Book I think could have a successful sequel especially with how well this first one has done.

In other news...massive rewrites/Shootson Rogue One

That is awful news...either it's bad...or Disney is deciding it's "not right"

The second part is the real scary one...because if anything is evident now...is that these movies have to be more human and have a darker/cynical edge to them.

Now back to Johnny depp: scumbag ;)

Poor Johnny...2016 hasn't been the best year so far. My thing with this movie is why now?? 6 years is a long time between movies and it's not a movie that's aged well critically with fans. It rode the 3D wave...there isn't a whole lot of fandom for the first movie..at least from my perspective. Plus you throw in Depps terrible box-office track record lately and viola...Disney should be surprised?

I guess I don't "get" the Depp and particularly the Depp/Burton thing...at all. I like the PotC movies and other than that, "Rear Window" is the only other Depp movie that I've liked.
Secret Window?

I LOVED Sleepy Hollow and Sweeney Todd as far as Depp and Burton goes. I liked many others that didn't involve Burton but it has been a while since Depp starred in something good.

The rumor seems to be that Amber Heard promised to really mess him up. If true then just ugh.

Depp is a "normal" character (not like a Jack Sparrow, Hatter, Tonto, etc). He's a writer who is accused of plagiarism by John Turturro. It's a decent thriller.

I have actually never seen Sleepy Hollow!

I think it was a good movie from what i heard but I was watching Xmen and saw parts of Alice while waiting. I think they were stupid to put it out with X-Men. A week before X-men would have been better.

This was the sequel that really didn't need to happen. Ive not seen it yet and i doubt i will till i pick up the Blu-Ray but i feel that while Disney's live remakes are doing well, just stick to the one and don't do sequels to them. That goes for Jungle book too

The movie really had no point. It was a thrown together mix of visuals with a time travel element that really did nothing for the plot. The original made a billion dollars world wide so a sequel was almost inevitable, and was greenlit years ago (2012) before the success of the recent Disney Franchises.

My guess is it will probably break even worldwide or make a small profit when it is all said and done. I have a feeling Pirates 5 will have a similar fate, as people are over Depp at this point in time for a number of reasons.

We saw it Friday...it wasn't a great movie, but was decent visuals candy...

I'm surprised it flopped so big. I think Disney is actually releasing too many films...

There isn't enough hunger for 2-3 animated, 2 Pixar, 3 marvel, Star Wars, and 3 live actions a year.

They are oversaturating the market

Well with the tent pole strategy it may not matter. They'll drive some of this stuff into the ground at that pace for sure, but so long as they hit a handful of home runs each year they make their money on the ancillary products, not the movies anyway. Yes The Force Awakens made good box office, but it made a lot more in comics, novelizations, action figures, t-shirts etc.

Yet, I got to watch the preview at Hollywood Studios Monday instead of the original One Man's Dream film. In my opinion, that is something that should have been left alone.

A lot of people speculating the movie was too dark and Disney wants to lighten it up.
