RunDisney Virtual 5k Running Shorts Series

I just stumbled upon that on the runDisney site. I don't like it. You're buying a medal for $39. It really rubs me the wrong way because when I was deployed I emailed runDisney and asked them if they would consider doing some shadow runs for deployed service members for some of the races. All Disney would have had to do is send some leftover shirts and medals to a deployed location and volunteers at the base run the event. Disney said, "no." So buying a medal for this virtual race seems like it would be their answer to that now.

Additionally, the fun of runDisney is running though the parks with other like-minded people, stopping to meet characters, and seeing the sights. It's not about a medal.

Well, I'm a sucker for a Disney medal, so I'm in! Also hoping to go for Coast to Coast after my WDW Marathon and Dark Side Challenge!

I came here because I'm torn. I haven't been able to do a runDisney event yet, though Dopey is on my bucket list (target: 2024, the year I turn 50). So the idea of doing a virtual runDisney sounds great except that it's a lot of money to pay for what is essentially just a medal. The really logical side of me says that if I saved that $142 for the next three years, then I'd have $400 that I could use to help fund an actual runDisney event at DLR and that would be more rewarding. Sigh. I guess I'm talking myself out of it.

Well, now they would have a more positive answer for you, yes?

For you.

I don't much care for running through the parks (narrow pathways, people taking pictures right in your way, and no rides are open unless you're a fast marathoner), the other humans make me want to have Firestarter powers, and I have yet to stop for a character (I was phobic of them as a child and don't like them know)...

For me it IS about a medal, really. And a shirt. I tend to like the shirts.

Not sure if I'll do these virtuals, though they are incredibly reasonable. But I do like virtuals.

You can look at it as buying a medal.

You can look at it as a way of donating to a charity AND getting a cute medal. That's what most virtuals are all about.

I've always wanted to do a runDisney event, but reality and finances (hotel + flights, vacation days) haven't made it an option yet. So, I've signed myself up for this and can't wait! I'll just plug in some Disney music into my iPad and think happy thoughts while I run my favorite running route and look forward to my medals after its all said and done. I may not be down in Disney running with the masses through the parks, but through my imagination, I will be!:music:

I signed up. I am looking at these as training runs for the 10k during marathon weekend! Nothing motivates me more than Disney! It is totally worth it for me! I have asked if any friends want to do it as well, and if they do, we will make each run our own little event. If nobody else joins me, I will still be happy to do it, as it is all a part of the journey towards the 10k finish line for me!

Do we think these are medals as in actual metal or rubber like the 5ks and kids races???

I think I would have been fine with standalone virtual races, but dividing each series into three parts screams tacky. Making it a set detracts from the accomplishment of an individual race. As many have already mentioned, it's painfully obviously a money grab.
