Just Back from our first trip!

We are just back from our first trip to WDW and the Fort! Wanted to give some thoughts for others who may be looking for ideas, help and info! This board was invaluable to me in planning!

We were in 1600 loop, full-hookup, pet friendly. We weren't in an RV though, we only had a tent and there were several other tents in our loop. My first piece of advice is if they stick you somewhere you don't like or that won't fit your setup, just ask to move! They had first put us in 1700 loop on the only site with no tent pad...obviously wasn't going to work so we made a loop went right back to the front and was back at our new site (1629) in less than 10 minutes. No hassle and happy to accommodate us.

We were very impressed with the comfort stations. Always clean and many times, we were the only ones taking showers. The only time it was remotely busy was on our last morning I stopped in about 9am to use the restroom and there were a few people getting ready for the morning. The ice machines are located right outside the comfort station.

We were a stroller walk away from the Meadows pool. The full-hookup 1600 and 1700 or 1500 tent sites were all an easy walk to the pool. There were lots of other loops on the other side of the pool that also would have been an easy walk but I didn't take the time to see the numbers. We did have a couple chemical issues (aka someone pottied in the pool most likely) that shut the big pool down for about 2 hrs one day and the kiddie waterslide down for about 2 hrs the next. Aggravating but obviously not Disney's fault. We never had trouble finding pool seats and the line for the slide went quickly. We were at the pool on a Friday and a Sunday during the middle of the day. We also never had trouble getting a spot for a few minutes in the water slide. One perk we learned about was you could pay for a soda ($3) and fill it unlimited all day poolside. We would take our snacks and then share a soda. The refillable mug (18ish?) might be a good option if you were there all week, but just paying the couple days we were at the pool was great for us! The pizza is a great value to feed a family of 4!

Chip and Dale Campfire Sing-a-long was a hit with the kids. Side-note...if you know you are going to be going a certain night. Have an adult go the night before and ask if you can be the family that introduces Chip and Dale. You get some fun pics and I think they give you a Chip and Dale plushie animal. We got there about 15 minutes before it started, many of the benches were full but there was plenty of seating on the bleachers.

Tidbits: Our wi-fi worked perfect the whole time. We were in a pet loop but didn't have any animals with us. But, we had no problems with barking or anything so that was nice. There is a water hose at the site. There are about 5 parking spots right outside the meadows pool....very limited but we were able to get one early on our last day when we stopped by the trading post for some last minute souvenirs. I'm not sure if there is a similar set up at the Settlement or not.

Now for the biggest con of our whole trip....TRANSPORTATION!! I know many people have had great luck with it but it was a total flop for us. First, we did not rent a golf cart and I'm sure it would have made things easier. But the only time it mattered was our 2 MK days and we didn't want to pay $60 for a quick ride to the launch and then the golf cart sit there for 16 hrs. The boat directly to the MK doesn't run till 30 minutes before park open. We had BOG reservations both mornings around 8:00 so the direct boat was a no go. That left the boat to the Contemporary. But, in order for that to work we would have had to have caught a bus (and collapsed a stroller that we needed to use to walk to the bus stop in the first place) which translates to an unknown wait (maybe 5 or could be 15 minutes) then go to the boat launch and if for some reason you had just missed the Contemporary boat (maybe another 10-20 minutes) we didn't want to risk missing our reservations. And with a 2 and 4 year old, getting away from the campsite much earlier than 6:30 was tough. So we opted to drive (had our own car.) But even that took forever!! We could not make a right turn out of the fort which would have taken us directly to the parking lots. We had to drive the complete opposite direction and loop back around. We left both morning by about 7:00ish and were not at the MK turnstiles till 7:45. One morning the ferry boat wasn't running and the next the monorail wasn't running. I don't know if this is normal or not but less than an hour before the park opens and not all transportation to the park open is nuts! Needless to say, once we made it to the parks, we just stayed put. Our kids were troopers and went from 8:00am to 12am both days. The typically fell asleep right after the fireworks. The signs all over Walt Disney World did a good job getting you were you needed to go, except there was no sign for Fort Wilderness as you were leaving MK. We ended up in Kississimee the first night bc we missed a turn. The transportation by no means ruined our trip and we are already planning our next trip back, but it was definitely the main headache of our trip.

MAGIC KINGDOM: This is the only park we visited. Crowds were predicted to be 6s and 7s, but touring plans put their actual levels closer to 9s. Now, the last time DH or I was there was when we were kids so we were expecting crowded. I honestly wouldn't have known whether they were a 5 or a 9. A good touring plan was key! Josh at easyWDW was spot on! We didn't rush but moved methodically thru the park. If the kids wanted to ride something twice, we told them we would come back later and kept moving. If not we would have rode teacups all day :) DD4 is a princess lover and the princesses were completely spot on! If you have small kids, rider swap is your friend! We actually had to give away a couple swaps (Space Mtn) bc we just ran out of time. The parades, especially FOF was fantastic! We ate dinner at Cinderella castle as a special surprise and we loved it. Our waiter, food, and interactions were really good! Probably my only complaint in all of MK was the lines for food/water. There were a few times where I had to wait 15 minutes or more just for ice water! We also had no trouble getting extra FPs (party of 3, as DS2 didn't need one). Mostly for second tier style rides, but I even managed to score a 2nd set of FP for 7Dwarfs!

We had a fantastic trip and I would recommend staying at Fort Wilderness to anyone. Our favorite thing about the Fort was the peace and quiet after a long day and all the activities to fill our down day that was available at the resort. Thanks to all who helped answer my questions the last few months! I will try to get some pics up soon. Got back at midnight last night and at the office first thing this morning :)

Thanks so much for this great report! We are going in July with a Princess-obsessed 8y.o.

If you can think of any other tips, please share. The info on transportation was super helpful. We have bikes so some things will be a little easier for us but it's good to know we'll need a back-up plan in case the boat is down. That's not something I was expecting. Also great to hear the loops weren't bad. Makes me wonder if we should upgrade to a better site. We have a tent site booked but I'm worried it will be noisy.

This is so helpful! We're leaving in two weeks for our first WDW adventure, and will be towing our tent trailer to the fort. Being a DL vet, I am really nervous about the transportation, so I appreciate your observations.

TY for sharing your experiences. Hearing that the ferries can go out of commission freaks me out. I had been depending on them, esp the early ones to CR, in part to avoid the monorail, which seems to go down (too) often.
@MamaRoo, I'm with you. We're DLR vets, and transportation (and all the TIME it will eat up--45 minutes to drive a mile and park and get into the park?!?!?) is the biggest concern and frustration.

lynzi,

The transportation issue (mainly buses) is why we stay in the Preferred sites down by the beach. In the mornings for the parks we can boat to the MK (two options - direct or CR), bus (to WL and transfer to MK). And we can walk from 100/200 to those points easily. We drive to the other three parks (although sometimes we do the boat/monorail combo for Epcot but not when we are pressed for time). We don't have to rely on internal buses for a morning time commitment. I use them to go up to the overflow lot/check-in area and that's about it.

I'm glad you spoke up when you were assigned your site, saw it, and asked for another. That's a good piece of advice.

Thanks for the updates.

Thanks for the response about the preferred sites Bama Ed! Which loops would be preferred for tent sites? And are they still close to the meadows pool? I wish I would have taken more time to look at those loops!! I pretty sure the premiums are all pavement and we really need a tent pad.

Also for those without strollers, I don't think the internal bus system would be as bad. But when your going to be spending all day in the parks with a 2 and 4 year old...we were loaded down and I did not want to have to break everything down! Lol

A couple other notes...those biting flies are out now. We barely noticed them the first two days of our trip, but they came with a vengeance near the end. Make sure you have a place to sit out at night within some sort of screen.

Also for those with little kids, they have handicap shower stalls with a detachable shower head that made cleaning up kids a breeze!

One night we randomly deciding to roast hot dogs, so we had to use the trading post for groceries. It was $20 for hot dogs, charcoal, chips, buns. So about $10 more than what you would pay at Walmart. Not terrible and nice you can grab a few things, but I would try to buy offsite when possible.

So so so good to know. We camp every Summer for 2-3 weeks and we always travel from place to place. It's so hard giving the kid a shower without the detachable shower head. Such screaming and freaking out. At Assateague, you would have thought I was killing her in the shower.

Our touring plan allowed us to see all the princesses, except for Snow White and Aurora that we met at CRT.

Here's a rundown...
8:20 BOG reservations (preordered)
8:50Rode Mine train once
9:00Went straight to PFH and met Cinderella and Rapunzel with about a 10 min wait.
9:20 Winnie the Pooh
9:30 Teacups
9:45 Dumbo
9:55 Barnstormer
10:00 Meet Ariel (25 min posted wait, probably closer to 15)
10:30 Ariels ride
11:00 Enchanted Tales with Belle (FP 10:40-11:40)
11:40 Peter Pan (FP 11:40-12:40)
12:00 It's a Small World

We had no trouble breezing thru Fantasyland and didn't have to double back by taking the route we did. We probably would have had time to see Philharmagic before Peter Pan but saved that for another day.

We then headed to lunch at Liberty Square Market (hot dogs and chips) before going to Adentureland.

1:15 Met Jasmine and Alladin (20ish min wait bc we had to wait thru a break)
1:40 Magic Carpets
2:00 Jungle Cruise
3:00 Watched FOF from Frontierland

3:30 7Dwarfs (3:30-4:30 FP)
4:00 Buzz
4:45 Met Merida while DH did Space Mtn (kids could color while waiting!) 20 min wait

5:15 Went right across the hub to meet Tiana and Naveen in Liberty Square (25 minutes wait thru a break)

On our second MK day we skipped riding 7Dwarfs first and went straight to Anna and Elsa. But Anna and Elsa may be moved to Epcot by the time you go so the Snow White and Aurora should be back at PFH. We enjoyed mixing the rides with the meet and greets!

Thanks for your itinerary. It helps with wait times. I have the TP app and made up plans online that I will use loosely.
Yes, Anna and Elsa will def. be at Epcot by the time we're there. I'm just hoping they'll make one tier one, and the other tier 2, or just get rid of the tiers so we don't have to choose. She has already chosen the ride over the meet but I think she may be disappointed. Not sure. She said, I don't want to meet people dressed in costumes, I want to meet the real people from the movie. I said, it was a cartoon, they weren't real and she got this weird look on her face. She only saw it 2 times and it's been a while. It's like it was so real to her that she forgot they were animated. I think when we get there, she will want to see them ALL and I will die standing in line.

Great trip report! Thank you for posting.
We were also there this week. Crowds were unusually high for this period. We found the MK to be overwhelming (and we are frequent visitors)! Disney transportation was horrible. It took us over 90 minutes to get to the front gate at Epcot (and we have a golf cart). The wait for buses at either end varied from 15 to 40 minutes and there was frequently standing room only even during non-peak times. On one occasion we were running across the crosswalk from Guest Services, the bus to Animal Kingdom was sitting at the curb. We signaled the driver to please wait, he looked at us, shut the door and pulled away right as we reached the door. This is completely out of the ordinary from our usual experiences. One day the Monorail was down for an extended period, and on another, they were only running one ferry to the MK - our friends missed the start of Hoop Dee Do having left their resort two hours before.
Another thing that was annoying was the My Disney App - it kept crashing on us, and needed to be constantly refreshed or closed and reopened.
One morning I received an e-mail thanking me for canceling my dining reservation at Hoop Dee Do - !!!!!!!!!! Never did so. That took an hour to rectify - luckily we were given new seats right up front (now I need to deal with the double payment). CM told me they are messing with the technology so much that CMs fear loosing all reservations at some point.
So here are the good things - The Flower and Garden displays were lovely, as usual. The wi-fi worked well, but could be very slow at times. We like the new trash barrels and the doggy bag stations throughout the pet loops. Fellow campers were friendly and respectful. Even a bad day in the parks is better than no day in the parks!

We are already thinking about a trip back next year and your report makes me anxious to see what it would be like during a lesser crowded time. We made it fine, but we had nothing to compare it to. So hearing from frequent visitors that it was actually quite crowded makes me happy to know we can actually handle it! Hope your next trip back is less crowded :)

The Preferred loops are 100/200 (300 is a Pet Preferred) down near the beach. See the Fort map in post #9 http://www.disboards.com/threads/fort-wilderness-resort-information-a-work-in-progress.3502095/

They are identical to the sites in the Full loops like you had with the only difference being their location within the Fort. To me, they are worth a few dollars more. They have the tent pad. Here is our site in #104 last month:

I pitched one of my canvas wall tents behind my popup on the tent pad.

The tradeoff is they are NOT close to the pool like you were in 1600. But while you were on the clock to get to breakfast one morning, I can get to the pool in no hurry.

Look at the map linked above. The Preferred are loops 100-300 and Premiums are 400-1400.

Thanks! Another random question for you...DH loves the campers like yours. How long have you had it and pros and cons with it?!?

Thanks! Another random question for you...DH loves the campers like yours. How long have you had it and pros and cons with it?!?

Okay, we are going :offtopic: here. :thumbsup2

I've had it two years and LOVE it. We had a big, solid, heavy popup with slide-out bunks and a slide-out dinette for extra room. I have two boys and the last child is a girl so it served us a long time while they grew up (we had it 10 years and had bought it new). It served us very well.

However, the boys grew up and went off to college and they were my main muscle to roll it into/out of the garage where we stored it (it was in great shape at 10 years old) and we all helped with set up and take down. I had trouble moving it myself plus I was doing most of the set up and take down.

I had looked longingly for years at the A-frames. They are small inside, yes they are, so once we got down to 3 people at home I pulled the trigger. It's lighter and sets up in 10 minutes. What I like is on overnight travel trips, now I can roll into a cheap campsite and plug in and pop up the roof without having to unhook it from the hitch. In the old days I couldn't get the bunks open because they would have hit the car. Our choices were: 1) drive into the evening longer and pay for a hotel, or 2) stop driving late afternoon to get a campsite and set up, take down, blah blah blah.

Also since it has solid walls versus the canvas bunk ends, it's easier to camp year round here in Alabama. It still needs a ceramic heater but it does better. And the fall-winter-early spring is when I have time to camp. On the storage issue, since I tow with the Suburban I have plenty of room in the TV to take a few storage tubs that stay behind the camper or in the car.

Specifically, mine is an Aliner Expedition 2014 model. It has a 14 foot box under the roof where nearly all others are 12 foot. (my old pop-up had a 12 foot box under the roof but felt bigger because of the bunk ends). It is definitely a 2 person (or 2.5 pushing it) camper. It's obviously storage challenged inside which is a constant issue with DW. :love2: it has a sofa in the back that folds down into our bed and a dinette table at the front that folds down into a bed for DD (who is our last child at home but is going off to college this summer). So we will be empty nesters and I plan to tell the kids if they want to come with us, we have about 8 different tents at home they can choose from. :teeth:

With the peaked roof, it does not feel claustrophobic inside. The bubble windows are well positioned when I sit at the dinette or sofa, my head is slightly within the bubble (I'm 6 foot). Ours came with a toilet but no indoor shower, microwave, 2 burner stove, 3cf 3-way fridge, sink with fold down nozzle. I put pictures in my "bringing home my new camper" thread: http://www.disboards.com/threads/bama-ed-has-a-new-camper.3259749/#post-51129892

If DH has questions, maybe you/him could start a thread on the Camping Community Board and we could follow up there. But if you're a family of 4 now, he may have to wait like I did.

When we were there in March, you would get 3 (or 2?) refills in 2 hours. So your experience was that you could refill all day? My kids will be ecstatic. That's a really good deal.

Thanks for this post. I am wondering how we will do the stroller when we camp. We are not likely to be in a preferred loop so we are thinking about how we will lug the stroller around and if we should get the double we normally do, or two good umbrella strollers.

We had a double stroller. It was a little hard to push when we would cut thru loops as short cuts but the rest of the time was fine. 2 umbrellas might be easier to get on the buses with.

It was a pain folding down that double to get on the bus, but my husband got pretty good at it. I think we may bring 1 NICE stroller and 1 umbrella that way if we don't need one, we can leave it behind.

An umbrella is definitely easiest, but a full size that has one-hand folding is almost as easy. What I wouldn't recommend is a stroller that breaks down into two parts (like some Bugaboos). My practical advice is to try and carry things in a backpack - if you stuff things in the basket of the stroller, you have to take it out and that's a big pain for the getting on the bus and getting on the smaller boats. We like a backpack that we can hang from the handle of the stroller so we scoop up the baby, one hand fold, into the bus or boat. I think the Baby Joggers that are often rented might have one-hand fold (my single one does).
