RUMORS: Luke is Kylo Ren

I don't find it too likely, mainly because of the insignificance it would bring to Adam Driver

I feel perhaps Luke Skywalker's part of the movie is important to the point where they don't want to include it in the trailer, and would rather everyone wait until the release. However, it would be an interesting turn of events

When it comes to spoilers rumor of otherwise could we leave them out of the thread titles.

I think they want to "toughen" this new set off movie up to beyond the 5 year old stupidity that Lucas vomited onto DVDs ten years ago...

But I don't see it. I can't see them turning skywalker evil - even if temporarily - then back. It's just too much of beaten path to basically repeat the Vader timeline.

I can see him as a tortured soul...and perhaps a little crazy - trying to control a power that would be concentrated on him alone.

That I could see.
I made this reference on another thread...I can see him morphing from the xmen character jean grey into the uncontrollable character of the Phoenix...I could see that kinda turn no doubt.

No. That literally makes 0% sense. We know who plays Kylo Ren, and it's not Mark Hamill.

I agree...there's no sense to this.

I'd like to point out that there were rumors about a year ago that Disney was going to actively "leak" false/ contradictory info to throw people off trying to get spoilers out.

This could be that.

Or...maybe Luke is "bad"...and somehow got sucked into the power vaccum left by all evil in the galaxy dying 10 minutes apart.

Maybe he's the "master"

J.J. Abrams claims it's intentional that Luke isn't specifically seen in any of the trailers or teasers.

True, but there are a number of reasons that is the case. A major point in the plot line? Probably. Specifically that Luke is Kylo? Possibly. Hamill did like the idea of Luke going to the dark side, and Lucas once gave that serious consideration. But I doubt that is what will happen -- at least in this manner. Lucas isn't in control anymore and as far as I am aware, Hamill is just an actor and isn't involved with the story board. Such a decision could also alienate as many fans as it would thrill. That wouldn't be a good move for Disney. And why is someone else cast as Kylo, if he is Luke? The missing Luke in the ads could simply be a red herring to make the fans come up with all sorts of crazy plots far from the actual one.

I haven't followed all that closely to who the new characters are (I don't want a plot spoiled for me), but I wouldn't be all that surprised if Luke was related to Kylo, though. I can see Luke as his father, uncle, or even a much older half brother. Imagine Vader finding a romantic interest with another dark sider just before ROTJ takes place, and Kylo is born after the battle of Endor. The reason Kylo picks up Vader's helmet is to follow in in father's footsteps. Luke is is half-brother!

Ok, they probably are not going with another Vader "I am your father" story either, but I think even that story is more probable than Luke being Kylo Ren.

There have been theories going around that Kylo is Luke's clone from his lost hand and other similar theories that if anything close to this comes to fruition, it's going to be a storyline letdown for me, and perhaps even for some people who are looking for the Luke=Kylo plot.

So who is Kylo Ren? A Skywalker decendant? Someone totally new to the franchise? I guess I'll find out in 41 days.

Here's what we can't discount:
Abrams was an 11 year old kid who fell in love with Star Wars like many of the rest of us...

So what would a fan do?

I'm sure he's trying to stamp it...maybe pull off a plot twist of ax a big character for artistic purposes...

...but there's just as much of a chance that he doesn't kill a
Childhood hero of his or turn one into a big heel.

It's possible to have a more serious story where nobody ends up irrevocably screwed like the Nolan Batmans.
I think they might have actually done that with a Star Wars movie once before...

For the most part, I agree. But I think Solo meets his end in this one.

Very possible...and I think if that's true it's because one guy doesn't want to be stretched out over 5 years of shooting and have a character "remarginalized"...

The whole movie seems fixated on that character...

Each movie seems to be a "swan song" of one of the older characters...at least that's how it's lining up.

But then again...they always made no qualms about keeping people guessing...so who knows?

This is why I bought tickets for the very first show. I have no willpower for spoilers!

In the first film, of the first trilogy, Liam Neeson plays "the wise old Jedi mentor" and... dies by the end of the movie

In the first film, of the second trilogy, Alec Guinness plays "the wise old Jedi mentor" and... dies by the end of the movie

In the first film, of the third trilogy, Mark Hamill plays "the wise old Jedi mentor" and... why do you think Princess Liea looks so sad in the trailer?

I don't believe you to be correct.

If I had to bet...I would say that this movie either is or sets up a "search" for the one remaining Jedi

Alec Guinness didn't really stay dead though, his ghost kept popping up in Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi

That being said, I have a really hard time believing they would kill off Luke, even though it seems to be a trend in these movies

You correct that there is no way to "kill Luke" in a Star Wars...

But even if they were going to...I don't think it will be in December. They've already teased the hell out of this...

Luke is a lost/mythic figure...my guess.

If anybody goes...it's the smuggler or the wookie...
And though that seemed likely a few months ago I'm beginning to doubt it...

But...the Han and Leia scene you mentioned is not at the very end of the movie.

The soundtrack listing was leaked online yesterday...and as with all things star wars - the music tells much of the story.

One thing is clear...as I mentioned on another thread yesterday...is that they feel they've made a spectacular movie. The question is: is it epic and lasting by the standard of Star Wars or empire?...or today's dumbed down standards?

Spielberg asked to see the movie...and obviously was given full access by his former employees Kennedy and Abrams...THREE times.

That doesn't seem to indicate they made "attack of the dialogue"

Given how so much of what you see in the trailers is a rehash of things you've seen in the past films I'm not getting my hopes up about this one, but in these trailers Luke is basically "Old Ben" now living alone somewhere, and none of the new cast seem to be aware that the force even exists, which how Luke and Han start out in the movie they now call A New Hope. This seems like a story of history repeting itself to me, I'm hoping it's a little better than J.J.'s second Star Trek which was just a remake of Wrath of Khan with some of the roles switched around. I'm more looking forward to seeing Rogue One with the original Darth Vader and the Death Star

There are a lot of opinions that this movie will be a combo retelling of both Star Wars and empire...

...but that actually makes a lot of sense.

Because they don't have to tell a completely new story here to make a good one and rekick the franchise.

Trilogies work best when the middle chapter is best and the third is more uplifting...

As we've seen in many ways with lord of the rings (different scenario, but the stories worked) and nolans Batmans.

Not only that...but kasdan had referenced the principles of storytelling/Shakespeare in interviews...

A story is intro, struggle, and triumph...that is only a consistent winner throughout recorded history.

Now...I'm not sure that I'll absolutely love a new version of the original movie...but will my 8 year old on 12/17? It has been 38+ years...

And that is probably how Disney is going...an update to try and rebuild...

Why can they get away with a rebuild? Why can it be a huge hit?

Three of the most awful movies in history make it so. Everything that was wrong with modern movies circa 2000...

That's the context.

I do agree that Star Trek was a better effort than "into darkness"...

Which may be why they're using "director rotation" for all the planned films...

Every director has probably grown up/dreamed about shooting a star wars...

This way they get 2-3 years of nut/zealot commitment from each director. One shot at immortality.

I still think it funny that Lucas bothered to say "I won't be directing any more Star Wars" out loud...

NOBODY wants you anywhere near it, Bub.
