Hey guys! We are leaving in a couple of days and are considering taking Rt. 81. We usually take 95 straight down, but almost always sit in traffic in DC. I'd appreciate if you guys can share your experiences with me and let me know which route you prefer. Thanks so much!!!!!

The last few times we went South, to Myrtle Beach and WDW, we hit I-81 near our home in North East Pa and took it to Winchester VA. From there we went east to Fredericksburg. That's our preferred route now as we found not the I-495 beltway to be bad but a few miles South of there I-95 turned into a parking lot, and this any time of day we got there. We usually stop for the night in the Wilson area, various map sites will tell you that the I-81 route will take a little under a half hour more than I-95 but we always beat our adult kids there when they go the old way. Even if that were not the case, I'd gladly spend a little more time at 70 mph as opposed to less time stop and go.

I-81 can get heavy with truck traffic. Using google maps try calculating the route using 81 vs. 95. Then add 15-30 minutes to the 95 drive time. There is almost always traffic around Fredricksburg. But, the HOT lines on 95 south of DC are great.

Not to WDW, but we took 81 when going from CT to Charleston, SC a couple of years ago. I had friends who were in Myrtle Beach the same week, and they got stuck in terrible traffic on 95. They drive straight through, while we broke the drive up into a couple of days, but the total drive time was close to equal, and 81 was a much more relaxing drive. Yes, there are a lot of trucks, but traffic moved the entire time. Plus, it's a prettier drive.

from the local news last night 81 was closed for a number of hours because of truck accident near Maryland border in Pa. but I would still take 81 to 95 around DC

I took the 81 route during the summer...on a Saturday....and hit a lot of traffic, especially on 26 in SC. There never seems to be a good time during the day to hit DC and 95 southbound to Richmond. We've taken to driving through that area of 95 either late at night or early in the morning...as in getting through DC by 6am. Safe travels with whatever route you decide to take!

Thank you all for your replies! We have decided to take 95 down (since we are leaving very early morning hours) and will take 81 on the way home. I'll let you know how we make our!! We appreciate all of your feedback!!!!!

Your sacrifice for the greater DIS has been duly noted! Can't wait for your report.

Count me as a fan of I-81, I often give advice to go this way rather than I-95. Yes, I-81 has a lot truck traffic, but so does I-95. But I find I can go 70-75 more consistently on I-81 / I-77 / I-26 and I find far fewer slowdowns and accidents that way. And for sure, city or rush hour delays are only an issue for Charlotte NC (Columbia never an issue) but on I-95 you have quite a few areas with slow traffic and many accidents.

I realize you've made your decision, but I just wanted to put this out there for anyone else making this decision. We live in central PA and use I-81 alot since we are located about 20 minutes from it. We use it most often to go between where we live and State College and Harrisburg, but we also travel to the Outer Banks and to Myrtle Beach often (I've also driven it to it's end to go down to Louisiana). We have found that using I-81 is a faster drive. Yes, there is ALOT of truck traffic, but the speed limits are fairly consistent and that leads to less aggressive driving. Setting the cruise control and driving a happy, consistent speed with everyone else makes for a pleasant drive. Sure, like any highway or road, you can hit traffic from an accident, but we have found there are less backups than 95. We take 81 down to 64 towards Richmond, but instead of going all the way to Richmond, we get off of 64 and take 288 south east. It hits 95 further south of Richmond and you can avoid alot of the traffic (so, when you are going home, I'd really suggest going that way to get onto 81).

Have driven this route many times from Rochester NY: I-90, I-79, US19, I-77, overnight Columbia SC, I-26, I-95, I-4.

By far the worst section of road is always I-95 in SC... a section of two lanes only in each direction that starts rubber banding and gets saturated by 9 AM. We try to get on the road by 7AM in Columbia so we can clear SC soon after 9AM.
Second worst: I-77, WVC Turnpike section, in the dead of night or in a winter storm.
Third worst: I-4 through Orlando, but now we use FL 417 more often.

That's a really great suggestion. We took 288 from I-95 coming back from a beach trip, but took another road north rather than taking 64W to 81N. Will have to keep that in mind! Thank you!

We were stuck on 81 coming home from Florida back to NJ due to an overturned tractor trailer. We prefer 95, but much of it is timing. Going South we have never had an issue (and we time DC after 11pm). I hope the OP has safe travels.
