VMA Awards

What happened to other forms of music? DS tells me that they only concentrate on what is popular but it seems even more narrow than that.

I dunno, it's always been mostly about pop and hip hop. They've never recognized country and it's hard to see them trying to acknowledge adult contemporary ;p

I missed it this year. The Miley Cyrus promo ads were more than I could take, so I knew I would not enjoy the show.

How about rock music? I know that it's not as big but it's still around.

I'd consider some of the bands that were honored at the VMAs to be rock. Fall Out Boy won best Rock Video. I'd call 5 Seconds of Summer and The Weeknd rock. Or what passes for Rock these days. They are no Led Zepplin ;p

I tried turning on the show twice. A no go for me both times.
It's supposed to be Video awards, right? Do they even play the videos that get awards on MTV? Or it it based on YouTube these days?

That's putting it mildly. He's said he's more influential than God.

Uhh, yeah no.

Oh I can't stand him. CAN'T. STAND. HIM.
Can't stand him? But he's the voice of our generation! He is to music what Michael Jordan was to basketball. Just ask him yourself.

I wonder if Kanye can name all 50 states??

Or the last 5 Presidents??

Or the first 5 Presidents??

I would bet my 11 year old knows more about American history and world history than Kanye West does.
But, he has till 2020 to learn I guess.
I'd be shocked if he actually knew which day was election day. Heck, I'd be surprised if he knew what month the election is held.

5 seconds of summer rock? Gosh I hope that isn't what rock is now..lol This is why I love my XM and Octane.

Honestly I know I am getting old..but if I have to hear one more booty sliding down the pole look at my big round butt song..Im going to go insane.

I was just skimming through and that read "Miley Cyrus porno ads." Which probably wasn't far off.

The sweet spot for pop music seems to be 11 year old girls, that's about how old I was when I started listening to it (full disclosure: I was not a girl.) I was already an adult when MTV came along, and I liked it quite a lot, and did for a long time. MTV was very influential in its early days, and of course they really ushered in the era of Hip Hop. Because MTV changed with the hope of growing their audience, they've lost their mojo. The VMA awards are mostly about making money for the network (as are ALL network programs) and providing a promotional vehicle for the performers. That's all good, but there's no reason to think anyone much above 30--and that's pushing it--would have any interest in watching it.

Fall Out Boy got their award during the pre-show for some reason. I think that they're pretty awful too but OK. The other two... :crazy2:

Is that a requirement? I'm guessing some of the current crop of candidates might have difficulty with those questions. LOL.

Wow, I didn't actually watch the show so did not realize the didn't include the rock award with the regular show. Guess that shows how out of favor that genre is with their demo right now. No surprise given the lack of commercially available good rock.

Rock isn't dead, but it's taking a big nap. Everything comes back, Rock will return sooner than later.

I remember staying up until midnight to watch the premier of Michael Jackson's Thriller. (pretty sure that's when it debut'd) I miss real videos. I miss the old MTV. For awhile VH1 was doing close to the same thing but no more.

I'm not that far out from when I watched the awards...I only knew Sway of the VJ's. Though I do feel like when I watched the VMA's there use to be a wider variety of music covered.

Many original MTV VJ's are now on XM.
Really? I listen to the DJ Madison on Alt. Nation and I listen to The Pulse, The Blend, Top 10.

I have one question about Kayne, why was he allowed to talk on and on. And what was with Taylor acting so surprised at the end of his speech.
