Beware of Room Charging

Just back from an 8 day stay at PBH and wanted to pass on a word of warning. I would advise against room charging as it is very difficult to fight fraudulent charges. We setup room charging in case of emergency, but did not use the privilege. However, a pretty hefty pool bar charge randomly appeared on our account. I went to the front desk and spoke with a manager who removed the charge promptly and said that they would investigate. When I arrived home, they recharged my card with the fraudulent amount. I am now having to dispute the charge through American Express. Just wanted to pass on the info.

Good advice.
On one of my trips at RPR, the bartender took a patron's word as to room # for charging. She did not ask for a key. I promptly went to front desk and cancelled my room charging privileges.

On my most recent trip, I noticed as I was checking out that there was a valet charge. I did not have a car or have guests visit. I am assuming this was from the previous night's guest, but still.

Like anywhere, you just have to be careful because even true honest mistakes happen. Room charging makes me very nervous and I don't have the stamina to fight things long distance.

it always wise to check your room account for charges each day to avoid issues when you check out.

most peeps check their account on the tv in their room.
it is quick, easy and accurate.

I check the tv everyday when I return to the room. I even check it after a meal poolside to make sure only what I charge appears there.

The other thing is have them show you a the signed receipt . If they cannot produce that receipt then it's not your problem and you did not authorize it.

Hmmm... has anyone else had a problem with incorrect charges showing up on their room account?

I was thinking that charging to the room account might be somewhat safer because I wouldn't run the risk of losing my credit card. But if false room charges are a common issue, it might be better to just use my credit card.

Are there any other advantages/disadvantages to room charging, other than just the convenience factor?

i have to laugh because it seems like my every stay onsite stay, a car parking charge ends up on my bill...
i catch it when i check my room account charges and inform the front desk.
they always remove it immediately.

i use car service, no car while i am on vacation.

i have never ever had it go any further creating an issue on my final bill.

Have you called them again to talk with the manager?

Nope.

They put a daily hold on your account. PBH has the highest, but even RPR's daily hold is pretty hefty IMO.

Since Universal is generally at the end of a WDW stay, it can get a little dicey (since we keep our credit limits somewhat lower than many Americans, because we know ourselves and our capacity to be stupid when given a higher limit) with charges from WDW then the hold, and then with the hold still on there, paying for our room-only charge. If you have a lower limit and are doing a multi-stop vacation, definitely consider making a payment to the CC while on your vacation.

Never had an issue and I have stayed at PBH the last 3 times and used room charging all 3 times.I just made sure to double check it everyday

We ate lunch at the Leaky Cauldron one day. The cashier was a hot mess and told me my room key wasn't working and rudely claimed I must have depleted the account, right after I had put $800 into the room account (if you use a debit card for room charges they only put on the amount you specifically authorize). She then ran my wife's room key and said it worked, but I was suspicious she had double charged us.. Of course there were 2 identical charges on the room account that evening. I took it to the front desk of the RPR and showed my receipt, and they took the second charge off immediately and apologized for the Leaky Cauldron cashier's rudeness.

If this was more common you would hear about it more. Yes, it does happen but just like any monetary payment you should keep on top of it yourself. No other person cares more about your own money besides you.

Go have fun but be smart.

BTW: I have had mini bar charges even though I refuse the key every time. Every time it's fixed immediately.

Just for clarification - these sorts of charges could show up on your hotel bill regardless of whether you set up room charging, right? If so, it seems like it's a good idea to review your room bill daily, regardless of whether you set up room charging or not.

We were at HRH last week, and room charging was a mess overall. It wasn't even that we had fraudulent charges, it was that our cards only worked half the time. And it definitely wasn't because we'd depleted the preauthorized amount. It just didn't seem to work, even when the various restaurants and shops called in to the hotel.

By the end of the trip, we just had to laugh when we got our itemized room bill, and they had to give us a refund of half what we'd authorized for charging. We tried to spend it, we really did! :rotfl2:

DH and I have stayed at RPR three times and have never had problems with fraudulent charges showing up on our room bill.

We just got back from 4 days at the HRH -- and have never run into fraudulent room charges.

When they used to have the mini-bar some stuff would show up on our bill - but that was not from room key charging - sometimes there are sensors in there or the maid takes a snack ( ha ha )

They have always promptly removed any disputed charges.

We like to use the room key charging for the following reasons:
1) easy to walk around with just one card
2) We buy tons of $0.99 soda refills all day - so this keeps my Credit Card statement from having 2 extra pages, and me saying weeks later when I am looking at my bill "I didn't get icecream at 5th avenue pavilion"
3) We stay at HRH - and they now give you points for the $ you spend... so when we charge to our room we get more points
4) You can keep control over what CC you use - we like to use one that gives us cash back - so this ensures that everything gets charged to the same room with the CC on file.

Do most of the food places accept resort charging?

Last I heard, the permanent locations all accepted credit cards and room charging, but many of the small/ portable food carts weren't hooked up for credit cards & room charging, and only accepted cash. Is that still true?

I'm just trying to figure out if we need to carry any cash around at all.

I didn't know you could check charges on the tv!! What???? How do you do that?

you can find that info in the brochure they give you when you checkin

or you can ask the TM's at the lobby counter or concierge counter to walk you through the process.

should also be a stand up card in your room by the tv to explain how to check your bill online with the tv in your room.

Press menu on remote, then select account, and let it load, bingo all there. I also checkout there too so I don't have to visit the front desk.
