Taking the Plunge and booking flights

I am ready to book my flights but darn am I ever having anxiety over it and wondering if I am making the right decision!! We're heading to Florida from Dec 17th to 27th so flying there right at the start of peak flying time. After weeks of checking and finding nothing but flights in the $1,000 to $1,400 range return I finally found something at $890 and think I am just going to book them. I get so frustrated at how expensive it is to fly anywhere out of Regina and even more so how horrible the connections are. I finally found a flight to MSP, then direct to MCO. Most options are 2 to 3 stops en route. Anyway, just had to vent on this - really hoping I don't book then suddenly see a significant price drop! A travel agent I spoke to assured me I wouldn't for that time of year, so I hope she knows what she's talking about!

Rule of thumb is that if you see a price that YOU find to be good and acceptable you book it.

I basically did the same thing when booking my (non Disney) Hawaii trip this year. kept holding off on booking because the prices were too high, then finally they fell below my max price 5 months out. And then I keep checking Google flights every day to assure myself that I got a good price.

And now I find myself doing the same thing for my Oct WDW/Fantasy trip.

So I feel your pain. The key is that despite your frustration you stayed patient and didn't give in to booking at an undesirable price. Good on ya!

Christmas time is such a hard time to try and buy flights for to start with. To give you some idea, from Edmonton in 2009, we paid $3200 for four of us and thought it was pretty good. So that was $800 each 6 years ago.

I also agree with starvenger's points.

It really is just another form of gambling, sometimes you win and sometimes you don't. When I bought our flights for November, I waited and waited until I just decided that this was what it was going to be. Sure enough two days later the fares were down a couple hundred, but I was offered a very cheap first class upgrade, so in a way I was able to leverage my over priced economy fare towards a higher class fare. Right now the economy fares are higher than what we got first class for!

Good luck.

Thanks! I just went ahead a booked this am. Flights are expensive, but at least they weren't the $1,100 I thought they might be. And I did win in some respects on my son's one way flight home as the US to CDN worked out better than I thought and flight was about $50 less had calculated it to be. Now to keep looking for rental cars!

I just took the plunge today and booked our flights for December too! We're going to DLR for Christmas/New Year's celeb. Tickets for 5 adults from YVR to LAX nonstop cost us $1800+ CAD. That might have ended up too expensive but it's so much better for us than driving to Seattle and flying to LAX with layovers. We paid $1200+ for that trip and travelled almost the entire day!

Good thing you were able to see something less than $1000. If there's a price guarantee option with your fare, look into getting some money back if the fare goes down.

I am feeling the same way.....total anxiety...I am about to take the plunge....after I check all the other airlines AGAIN! :magnify:

After seeing my preferred flights with southwest on Aug 15th go down $20.00 then up 40.00
and the Canadian dollar fall I am just going to book and prey that they come down from 289 depart and 279 return :sad2:

Here I go....

I just did the same thing, took the plunge and booked our December YYJ-MCO trip. More expensive than I hoped but less than I feared. I had budgeted $3000 for the 3 of us and ended up getting the flight times I really wanted for a bit over $2600 including 1 night at a hotel near the airport on our way home.

I feel your pain! I, too, fly out of Regina and it is not the easiest or most economical Canadian city to fly in and out of. Having booked 5 trips now, I consider it a bargain when the two of us can get return tickets for under $1000. Until this last booking, we have always flown United. Aside from the 0Dark30 departure time, connecting in DEN was usually a breeze and we could always get later departures out of MCO. However, United no longer flys to DEN direct any more so for our next trip (Jan 2016), the cheapest I found and booked was with Delta for the trip down, connecting in Minneapolis and Westjet for the return trip (MCO-YYZ-YQR).

I still haven't taken the plunge for flights for my halloween departure/ nov 14 return from EDMONTON to ORLANDO!!! I've never had to pay $1,000 a person before, but it's looking more and more like that may be what it is this time! Horrible prices, horrible schedules! hoping something better comes up soon!
