Anyone ever use a portable AC cooler?

If you're talking about one of those r2d2-looking things that has a hose you feed out the window, then, yeah, I think you'll be fine in a popup camper, assuming there's enough power to run one. I know nothing about rv's. We used one to keep our bedroom cool in south texas summer heat when our apartment's a/c crapped out and they took two weeks to fix it. Just remember to empty the condensation bin and vent it properly. :)

Growinup',

I will give you one piece of advice. I owned a traditional popup for 10 years with a solid roof and canvas bunk ends. The best thing to keep it cool is to keep it in the shade. Get a site that does not put the unit in the sun.

That alone will help the AC unit keep up quite a bit. Good luck!

I own a 12,000 btu one I bought last year. I use it in my 12x20 shop and it keeps it cool, or at least tolerable. It should keep the popup cool, depending on what btu you have.

Highly recommend following Ed's advice on being in the shade.

We have a hard side 75 apache hard side pop up and our 12000 btu casement unit barley keeps up here in wisconsin. Now we are lookin at a 14000 btu portable for our 80 apache hardside pop up. But this will sit on a counter and be up higher for better air flow.
the thing that will be hard in a soft side modle is hooking the exhaust up

And with a soft side pop up you have no insulation value to think of

We have a portable AC that we put in a 9x10 tent that was then inside a 10x10 eze-up with the solid walls. This was for our kids when we stayed at the Fort last August. It is a 12000 BTU unit. When the DW and I would get the kids up in the morning, they would literally have the covers pulled up around their neck. It did a great job. This setup not only kept the direct sunlight off the tent but also kept the rain off the tent.

The rear of the tent had a mesh window where we vented the AC.

Yes..........their is a person under that blanket. The portable AC worked well.

We used to use a window type air conditioner in our tent and it worked well as long as we were in shade. Our tent had two openings and was a winter tent so it was sealed when zipped up. We would put the air conditioner in one door and duct tape it in place then only use the other door to go in and out. I think you could make it work in a popup just fine, get the most powerful one you can find though.
