Best Strategy for a trip in 2022? Lower Your Expectations

Wow, 2-3 rides for G+. Expectations definitely feeling lowered.
Hey, Even a single opportunity to skip a one or two hour line for the one ride you want to do was worth it for me. As an offsite visitor getting FP at the 30 day mark, only worthless fastpasses were typically available (things where stand by is fine and a short wait).

I thought I'd hate Genie+, but I found it easy to use and just checked at seven a.m. and then every two hours after park opening till nothing that would benefit me was available. It never crashed on us or anything either.

Lol.

Fast pass 3 for FREE
Genie + 2 or 3 $15

Congratulations Disney.

I’m a sucker and I bought it - twice - for my family of 5.

As an offsite guest I got zero rides under FP+ that I could actually use.

If you paid +$$$ for onsite and booked 2+ months in advance under FP+ then yes you could get good rides. But that's a lot more than $15.

Just curious, how many did you expect to get?

I don't consider the Disney wording change a lowering of expectations, more like setting expectations.
I did G+ the week it opened in October, and I did back to back headliners at two parks in one day. It was AMAZING. Like better than the Club Level extra FP+ amazing. Over 8 miles on the watch running between Jungle Cruise to Buzz to Peter Pan to HM. I hopped because I literally had done everything I wanted to, and it doesn't let you duplicate in one day. I was all in on Disney. All was well!

Then, well, it ended up like it is now. I might as well have put money in Mickey balloon and let go in January.

No offense, but then you didn’t even try to use FP+. We changed parks during our stay which meant we had no pre-booked FP reservations and we were able to make FP plus work for us, day of, without issue. We could still book most headliners. Disney always held back fast passes for those day-of guests. Dan

This certainly in multiple trips was never our experience as off site visitors, and we'd check a few times each day of our visit. We'd only reserve one or zero at the 30 day mark because of nothing being out there that was worthwhile to us. Do note that we go at busy times. I subscribe to touringplan.com too and any FP I could get except for maybe one per day, plugged into their plans, it said to not even use, so I'd cancel it. The time to go over to the attraction (tour in an inefficient manner) was more than the minimal time savings compared to the reasonable standby line. The recommended FPs to get from touring plans were either not available at all or only available except during the nightly fireworks show that we wanted to see. Just our personal experience.

Having access to Genie + at 7 a.m. like the other gazillion offsite guests meant we could at least get something of value that saved us having to stand in a long line.

It's nice that the old system worked well for you. Don't know if you tour at different less busy times than we do. It was pretty worthless to us, though. I (maybe mistakenly) think of our party as being reasonable savvy in understanding how the system worked and using the app. Hey we even utilize touring plan time studies and the lines app they have to evaluate if the old fastpasses were worth getting.

I thought only on-site guests had access to genie plus at 7am?

We have friends there this week who went to Disney often in the past but haven't been for a few days. They chose to try G+ without guidance on their own and it didn't work out for them. They chose Bug's Life first (which they ended up not needing as there wasn't a line) and then tried for Na'vi but their return time was too late in the evening by the time it booked a time for them to use it so they paid $75 for 1 LL they didn't need.

They're going to the MK tomorrow and she's asked a lot of questions today and we've set up a plan of action for them tomorrow.

She's an 'average' guest and her experience so far is that she's not happy with G+ at all.
Same thing happened to friends of ours that visited last month. They are in their 40s. No kids. Hadn't been to the parks in 20 years. Thought it would be fun to see AK and HS since they've never been. I asked them if they had done their research and they had no idea what I was talking about. They were staying at our house, so not on Disney property. I advised them to be there before park opening, which they were> told them to go to FoP right away if they couldn't get ILL. They couldn't. I also told them not to buy Genie+. Well, they got there, saw everyone heading toward FoP and decided to go in the opposite direction thinking that the crowds would die down for Avatar. A CM talked them into purchasing Genie+. Genie recommended that the best thing to do first would be the rapids ride (it was a cold day in January). They waited until it was open and discovered that there was no wait for that ride and no need to book it through Genie. By that time, all the other things were booked in Genie except for a Bug's Life which they went on next. Everest was closed. They waited in a huge line for KS. Afterwards, they were so fed up with the long lines, crowds and the uselessness of Genie+ that they left. They didn't even want to go to HS after that experience. They've sworn that they'll never go to Disney again given the price of the tickets and how little they got to see. They felt it was too crowded to even enjoy walking around and looking at animals.

I might add that my friends are smart people. They were aware that they needed reservations, as it said that on the website when they bought the tickets. However, nowhere on Disney's website does it indicate that if you want to eat at a sit down restaurant, you need to make a reservation 60 days in advance. Nor does it tell you that if you want to ride all of the rides in the park, there's little chance of that happening between the breakdowns and the crowds. Nor does it indicate that you should have a touring plan before coming in and understand the ThrillData data of which rides are going fastest on Genie+ and how to maximize your usage of Genie+. Why should it have occurred to them that they had to do more research on this? It wasn't like that the last time they visited 20 years ago.

Similarly, I haven't been to Six Flags in 20+ years. If I decided to go this summer, it wouldn't occur to me that I had to do anything more than purchase tickets (maybe express passes), check the crowd calendar and find out the opening and closing times. I assume you show up, get in line for the rides that you want and eat when you want. That's how most theme parks operate, even Universal Studios. People saying that people should do more research is odd when you think about how much research people do to go to Knott's Berry Farm or Cedar Point.

Not sure what to say. The last few visits with FP+ have been in the summer months when crowds were high. (Not peak spring break or Christmas crowds mind you, but above average crowd level).

It feels like we used a totally different FP+ system than you, even though that can't be the case. Sorry you have such a lousy time with it. It may have to do with you following TP's schedule. Big fan here of Touring plans by the way. Love the Lines app, the room selector, reservation finder, articles, etc... I've subscribed annually since 2010 but have never used their premade or custom tours.

Just like with G+, FP+ was most effective for MK. At MK we fastpassed all day long and rarely went standby. We'd regularly see people in a 20 minute line for say, It's a Small World, and I'd look on the app and see that I could FP it immediately. When you did that regularly that ends up saving a LOT of time in a day for other things. Headliners were not hard to find either. 7DMT? Yes, very hard to get day of, but even that we've done.

At EP we could regularly get Soarin day of. At AK we could get anything other than FOP day of. At HS (this was before Galaxies Edge) we could get anything day of with the exception of SDD.

We looked at the app much more than "a few times each day" though. We put our time/effort into it and it paid off big every time.

We had the same experience as you with FP+. We often booked within 30 days and had no trouble with it. We did our first three in the morning, and then rode FP after FP all day. We often got lucky with the “modify” option and picked up headliners that dropped at various times in the day, even ones like FOP that are now excluded from G+. The FP lines were always shorter than standby, no matter what touringplans said.

If you read pp’s post, they did not actually use FP. Did not book 3 in advance and did not use the ones they booked because they TP suggested a different approach. As I say to my kids about eating vegetables, if you don’t try it, you can’t say you don’t like it.

Sorry to pull this off topic, but this exactly what we've told our kids growing up, and led by example. They are now VERY, VERY adventurous eaters and love to cook because of it. Cheers to you.
