Please please please someone...anyone... help me understand renting DVC points from an owner. I read somewhere that the tickets need to be puchased under the owners name, and transportation is setup under their name (that doesn't seem right to me)??? I just want clarity on how the whole process works.

Don't know where you read that about tickets, but where ever it was stop reading there because that's just wrong. As for MDE - several years ago in the past you may have had to have the owner add the MDE for you, but not anymore.

Ok thank you, like I said it didn't feel right reading that.

Is the reservation under the owner's name?

Here's the rundown:

The owner will make the reservation in your name. All persons staying in the room will be listed on the reservation.

Even though the reservation is in your name (as are all of its pieces and parts, like the dining plan or Magical Express), the owner retains control of the reservation at all times. Any changes to the reservation, like adding a dining plan or adding Magical Express, will have to be done by the owner. You can't make any changes to the reservation.

For a DVC reservation, tickets are completely separate. It's not like booking a hotel reservation, where you can get a package that includes tickets. The owner will not get involved in any ticket purchases, and DVC doesn't sell tickets. You buy your tickets wherever and however you'd like. If you're renting through a broker, some will be able to sell you tickets.

Everything else involved in planning/arranging your trip is done by you. You'll make your own FP+ reservations, your own dining reservations. If you want to book any tours or special experiences, you'll do that yourself.

Hope that helps clear things up a bit! :)

How does it work on MDE?

How does it work on MDE?

MDE is My Disney Experience. The online account you have with Disney, which you set up yourself. You will input the confirmation number for the reservation that you receive from the owner. You were asking about DME, or Disney's Magical Express, which the owner will have to set up for you. The owner will need your flight info. I'm not sure why the poster who responded mentioned MDE.

Tickets you will purchase yourself, and link to your MDE account.

VERY SMART:thumbsup2 of you to do your "due diligence" on the entire process of renting points before making the actual reservation. Much BETTER to understand the specifics, instead of hastily making a reservation, THEN asking questions LATER:scratchin! I always try to do the same with any situation that requires potentially losing money on any trip reservation, especially when NON refundable trip costs are involved. ENJOY your trip!:cheer2:

You can go through DVC rental and they can guide you just like a travel agent. You can reserve beautiful Disney villas like at the Polynesian or Beach club at less than moderate pricing. Yes you are not elegible for free dinning but it can total quite under a pakage price. I am doing a split stay through Disney and DVC rental 2 nights royal room at POR, 1 night Grand Floridian and 6 nights at the Polynesian with tickets and dinning for less than a 7 night royal room package. The only negative for me is you cant cancel 30 days prior like Disney offers. I purchased insurance for a 45 day no questions 100% refund. Its worth trying if you want to stay in deluxe accommodations.

I have not done this, but I believe you can set up the Magical Express bus service yourself, you do not need the owner to do it for you.

Make sure you understand the cancellation policy (probably can't cancel and get a refund) and the layout of the rooms. DVC has a lot of sofa beds, sleep chairs, small beds that pull down from the wall. When the description of the villa tells you how many it can sleep, it probably does not mean that everyone will be in a real bed. Read the description carefully.

DVC rooms booked on points (which is what you are doing if you rent) do not get daily housekeeping. Trash is picked up daily, but nothing else is done daily. Trash & Towels on day 4, full cleaning on day 8. For longer trips, that is reversed.

Edit: let me try that again. Trip shorter than 8 days: trash and towel on day 4. But if your trip will be 8 days or longer: full cleaning on day 4, trash and towel on day 8. (I've never stayed long enough for that.)

The owner can add the dining plan for you, but you have to pay for it. DVC never gets free dining.

If you are not a DVC owner, you cannot call DVC member services. The owner is in control of the reservation. Technically the owner could cancel the reservation after you pay. If you are renting from an owner privately, you need to do your due diligence on the owner. If you are renting through an agency, it will cost more, but then you are doing your due diligence on the agency, who more people have used, not on an individual owner.

Some room types do not have a lot of inventory and are hard to get. They might go right at the 11 month mark. If you price out value rooms at Animal Kingdom Villas and are planning according to that, for example, that is unrealistic because you are not likely to get those rooms. If you think it's a good deal because it's a cheaper room, DVC owners also think it's a good deal because it will require them to use fewer points.

I've read this somewhere or other also. There is a website where the renter can set up the DME themselves, but I don't know what site it is. I have always had the owner set it up for me when I rent points.

DVC rental you can go to their calculator choose your dates and resort choice and it will give you the cost. An agent once you put in a request can guide you every step of the way.

For Disney's Magical Express anyone can book it using their online form at: disneymagicalexpress.com I always book using this way whether I book directly with Disney, through a travel agent or renting DVC and get my tags about 1-2 weeks later in the mail! Real easy! I think if you wanted it called in, then the DVC member would need to do it.....but by using this form I have never had an issue booking the Magical Express on my own!

Actually AK seems to have the most inventory and lots of availability in different locations of the resort which I am not familiar with. The most popular ar the Polynesian, Grand Floridian and the Bech Club. It's just what your looking for and what works for your family. Disney is a vacation with work and planning to find your magic.

Animal Kingdom? Sure, tons of inventory. Animal Kingdom VALUE, especially a studio? Rarely will anyone ever be able to rent one. There are a max of 18 available, and 10 of those are lockoffs...so not only are you competing with owners over those studios, you're also competing against owners looking for 2br's.

Almost without exception, the hardest studio rooms to get for renters are actually AK Value, AK Club, Boardwalk Standard, BLT Standard, and Grand Californian...all due to very small inventories of those rooms (and low point requrements on all but GC).

Time of year matters, as well. Fall of the year through New Year's are very high occupancy times for DVC, due to (1) low point requirements through most of the fall, and (2) the holidays. First week of December and the holidays especially busy.

Your Right. I found as long as you call ready day 1 of 11 months out your good to go. Other than that like me new to the DVC renting I had to pick what was available and play around with my dates. I think we did pretty good and I cant believe I get to stay at the Polynesian. Very excited.

Just to clarify, this is an agency which acts as middle man between people who own points and people who want to rent points. It's not owned or run by Disney. (Not that you said it was, just wanted to be clear.)

You both are correct.

Sorry if I made you mad. My point was the people from the Dvc can answer lots of questions and are very helpful.

No worries. You didn't make me mad. I just didn't understand your response to my quote, because you were talking about costs and other things I didn't mention.
