Hurricane Irma?

If the 'new' forecast model track holds, I'm seriously considering telling work to shove it and leaving the state. My landlord won't board up our windows and I'm terrified of being in the house if there's roof or window damage. I don't have any friends or family in Florida, so if my house is damaged, I've got nowhere to go in the aftermath.

That is RIDICULOUS!!! I don't blame you for wanting to leave. Surely if there's damage to your place you have some friends who'll let you crash, right? Bottom line, you have to do what is best and safest for you.

5 PM advisory has come in. The pressure and miles per hour are the same. The track/cone has shifted slightly to the west.

Here is the most current Euro model projection of Irma's position at 8AM on Sunday. Note the estimated barometric pressure of 927 mb, which if accurate would mean it would come ashore as a cat 5 storm.

Just cancelled our early Saturday flight out of Philly, rebooked for 6am Wednesday. It was a tough decision, DH still wants to keep our trip intact. But I was getting very anxious. Although I know the track can still change, and maybe it will move further east, I was not comfortable. A few days ago I thought it wasn't a big deal to spend a day or two in the hotel, and I kind of do still feel that way. What pushed me to cancel was watching the news and seeing people trying to get the heck out of town, and I was flying in? Just seemed crazy!

Part of me thinks I should just change back to Saturday morning and hang up on Disney. I want to go now. But for us I think this is the best decision?

I am so sorry that you are facing this.. the landlord should be doing everything he/she can to secure your home :(

Are there any shelters you can go to? As much as it isn't ideal, they are safe & secure.

We're going Wednesday too.

Anyone else still on hold? I've been on for 5 hours 37 minutes now. Music is still playing but I'd like to get this rescheduling over with so I can relax a little (flight change will come after this call).

I do not care for the latest model one bit. I'd been pretty adamant that we would be able to stay in our house with no problem, now we're considering leaving and heading to Disney. I'd wanted to stay with the house, but as my husband pointed out, me staying with it won't make a difference if the roof goes flying off.

I totally get where you are coming from. If it was just me, I would have been there in a heartbeat, but I have Brevard evacuees headed here to ride out the storm with me, and can't afford a hotel for everyone. I am still glad I didn't cancel my Pop stay for Tuesday - I may need a place to stay afterward, if my car doesn't get totaled (it's garaged, but if the roof goes, that may not mean much). I am west of Disney, which I hope will help, and both levels of the house are reinforced concrete (block with rebar, then poured solid) so hoping that helps too. The house was built after Andrew's adjusted building codes. The roof and garage door will be the most vulnerable things. We are actually set into a hill, so we have an underground basement to ride out the storm in, with no windows. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't nervous, but it is what it is, and now it just a matter of following through to the other side. Hopefully this time next week we'll all be back here discussing the latest upcharge party!

Shocked, after only 45 minutes on hold I am speaking with a rep now. We were able to get one night at ASM before moving over to Saratoga for 4 nights thru DVC. Now just have to take care of MNSSHP tickets and changing Magical Express.

I am feeling so much better!

This shouldn't be a statewide freakout. It going to hit a significant percentage very hard. Most will ask, at storm end, "Is that it?" Doing this very early and getting people out of the Keys is fantastic. Saving our closest island neighbor, The Conch Republic should be a priority. After all, a hurricane in the Keys did kill the early railroad in Florida (and a bunch of laborers.)

Traffic will be stressed, power will be out. Issuing a state of emergency is so the emergency assets are in place before the storm really hits. It involves utility trucks, National Guard...

By Saturday mid-afternoon we will all have a good idea of where this is going, in terms of Orlando. The biggest reason that I would tell people to stay away from Disney while the storm is "passing" is that you will be sequestered to your room for 12-24 hours and the the food is going to be boxed lunch. This seems very expensive. All the resort rooms are Meh at best. Although I did envy the person had the ephemeral room in the Bay Lake Towers. Now that's the room to watch 50-70 mph winds from.
And your "biggest reason" does not include the impact on the folks there serving and trying to also survive whatever small or large issue posed by the storm.

Hi. You don't know me, and I don't know you, but we've both been member of DIS for a long time. I live in a house West of Orlando...can see WDW fireworks from my driveway, and am only two exits west of the Celebration/Disney exit on I-4. Anyway, if you need a safer place to be, you are welcome to come here. We have a generator at the ready, tarps to cover windows, you name it and we probably have it. Seriously, moved down here 8 yrs ago and this will be our first experience with a hurricane. One son and girlfriend live near Colonial Drive in Orlando and are coming here to ride out the storm. Other son works at Universal and his apt. is 15 min. from there. He and his gf are also coming here. Better to be with other people than left all by yourself to deal with it. The tropical storm winds are supposed to begin on Saturday and just continue to worsen through Monday. Please PM me or post here. Lynn

For anyone trying to find the most up-to-date info on Irma, the site in this link is excellent. The guy takes ALL weather info and consolidates it in one place, plus goes live around 9pm each night to explain all the graphs, etc. Stay safe everyone. http://spaghettimodels.com/

Just heard from our relatives in Clearwater. They are supposed to evacuate beginning tomorrow at 6AM. They are supposed to go to a Middle School on higher ground but have an offer from a friend further inland. Problem is the roads are a nightmare. Hope they will be safe.

We just got back from Disney last week. I am sorry for all the people who are in Florida and the surrounding states, worrying about this monstrous storm. I am also sorry for the people who had a vacation planned that is now disrupted/cancelled. That must be super disappointing considering how most of us look soooooo forward to our Disneyworld trips. If I was going to ride the storm out, I wouldn't be so worried about when the storm hit but I would be worried about the aftermath of the storm regarding the state of Florida after this horrific storm. Hopefully, it will not be as bad as it can be and hopefully everyone stays safe!

That is the nicest thing I've read in four days. Thanks for being a solidly wonderful human being! (And best of luck to you as the storm passes through. Am keeping a good thought for all of y'all who live there.)

Does anyone know if we were to cancel----if our park tickets would be refunded as well?

We are actually considering switching things to Disneyland instead.

Sadly, I made my decision to cancel my 9/9 - 9/17 trip. The track of the storm looks too serious to put my family in the path of it. We are sad, but know it's better to stay safe in the Northeast than add to the chaos in Florida.

Prayers for all of those in the storms direct path.

Are you on the direct flight? Do you have a contingency plan? I've been looking at the direct flight tomorrow in the afternoon as my backup plan.
Yes, we are on the direct flight and we have no contingency plan; a member of my group can't leave tomorrow.

Me, too. Just back from a WDW/Universal trip on 8/26. So sorry for everyone who had to cancel their trips - I would have canceled too - but more worried about everyone in Florida right now. Hope everyone is safe and gets through storm without much damage. Btw, I'm in NJ and my town was hit hard by Sandy. The aftermath was much worse than the actual storm itself (which was scary). Have enough food, water on hand and a generator if you can. We lost power for 14 days. Stay safe everyone!

We are cancelling or trying to reschedule as well. The new track is just not worth the risk. Stay safe everyone. Prayers for you all.
