Hurricane Irma?

This is from the FOX station in Orlando...ORLANDO, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - Orlando International Airport has posted a notice on its website that says OIA (airport code MCO) will cease commercial flights at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
This is posted as a known error that MCO put on their website last night. It's been reported many times as incorrect. MCO retracted that announcement overnight.

this is a 400 mile wide storm.. so when the tracks say it will be in north fla monday, I assume that means the eye? just wondering about how many days after irma thatflorida will get tons of rain. also, since florida is basically a swamp, will there be threas of sever flooding after? my grown kids are telling me that on wed we may beat the mian storm, but the after affects could be worse (thinking ofhouston, etc.)

I was checking some flights for their status on sat eveing to find this out and they were cancelled (on the american airlines web site) ?

Sadly since many of us do not live in Orlando, we have to depend on these news sources to help us make a decision. It's sad when a newspaper that has been around since 1847 (170 years) and the local FOX station publish bad information. The page is still view able with FOX, hopefully they will take it down.

12 gallons is huge...and not sure if it's legal to fill such a large can with gasoline.

12 gallons of gas would weigh about 80 lbs. Not easy to lift and tilt to fill your tank!

I don't think you'd find a 12 gallon gas 'can'. Maybe a 12 gallon gas 'tank' meant to be put in a fishing boat or whatever.

Edited to correct weight. Who knew gas weighed less than water!

It's posted here...http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/ct-flight-cost-cap-hurricane-irma-20170907-story.html

Operations will cease at Orlando International Airport at 2 p.m. on Saturday and airline officials said they will continue to monitor conditions at other airports in Florida.

The BEST source for information relating to the operations of Orlando International Airport is the official website and twitter account.

The Sept 7th update regarding operations was posted at 8:38am this morning

Well, Sorry, Chicago Tribune is wrong. They are after all, not in Orlando.

Don't be sorry, I'm glad the posting is wrong, not for me but for everyone else flying in. When the Orlando station had the same posting on their website, I took it as most likely true. I'm sorry for the bad info...

Liquids weigh about 8 lbs/gallon so 12 gallons of gas would weigh about 100 lbs.

I don't think you'd find a 12 gallon gas 'can'. Maybe a 12 gallon gas 'tank' meant to be put in a stand to fuel power tools or whatever.

Yup. Gasoline is actually lighter than water so it's about 7lb/gallon.

The circumstances that caused Hurricane Harvey to stall are not common. Currently there is no forecast that predicts anywhere near the amount of rain accumulation that was seen after Harvey.

Update for those who are curious (probably no one lol).

Originally planned to fly out Saturday morning at 7am from Atlanta to MCO. Now, I've rescheduled to fly into MCO Tuesday morning (just praying that airport will be open and fully operational). Going to MNSSHP that night, and then keeping plans mostly the same. Just leaving MCO Sunday instead of Friday now. Hope everyone's plans work out some way or another. Look forward to seeing you all! Feels good to have a reasonable plan and get excited again!

you might be delayed or cancelled out of Atlanta Tuesday since the storm is supposed to be around there to the east but since its 400 miles wide you are going to be affected no matter what

No, the situation is not like Harvey. If you check forecasts, while they can't determine exactly WHERE Irma will go they can determine that Irma will not stall out. There are systems in place that will enable Irma to move Northwardly-ish so it will move up and way from FL and is actually showing to be up and in GA/SC, maybe even NC areas by Monday and Tuesday. We are even showing possible rain here by Tuesday, how much depends on the tract. So there is still much unknown but there is much known too. And yes a large storm but that is also slightly misleading. There isn't 400 miles of destruction following along everywhere the storm goes. There are several good reports that can show where the areas of interest will be, though there are still wide ranges right now. They continue to narrow down as each check comes in. The high pressure system that is giving us our wonderfully cool and clear skies is responsible for sucking up, and pushing on, Irma. FL wants it to push more, GA/SC, not so much.

So i had tried saying "guest services" to the automated call yesterday and couldn't get through. The resort reservation ppl kept telling me there was no free dining .if I moved dates etc and when I asked isn't there someone I could talk to or something else I could do they said it is gone firmly. I went ahead and made all the changes like dropping the park hopper, stepping down the resort level etc because as a disney newbie I didn't really know about the "guest services" and their ability to make magic like free dining deals still happen. (found out on this thread.) This time I used the prompts "something else" and "ask a question" when calling the main number and only had to wait 12 minutes to get a person. Then I told them briefly how I was wanting to talk to someone about my free dining I lost and they were very very kind and switched me to guest services, where I have been on hold for 2hrs and 40 minutes so far.... But it was easier to get in line for guest services by "asking a question" at the beginning of the phone call versus waiting for hours for resort reservations and then getting transferred. (which I really couldn't get anyone to do the last few days.) Maybe this will help someone needing to get to guest services. I'll let you know if they were able to help me or not.

Orlando is not Houston, nor is Florida a swamp. We will not experience storm surge here, and we don't have rivers, canals, and bayous like the Houston area does, and we are at about 70 feet above sea level here. The amount of rain forecast is nowhere near what was in Texas. Florida also has engineered stormwater drainage throughout the state to handle our rainfall. The stormwater ponds must be designed to hold rainwater runoff for a minimum of a 25-year storm event. Many of the lakes and canals inland our linked via control structures, which can be opened to let water run further south into the Everglades and Florida Bay. SFWMD has already opened the locks on Lake Okeechobee to drain water, and they will subsequently drain some of the lakes down up here to be able to handle water. Flash flooding is something that will happen in low lying areas, and overflow of areas near the St. Johns River may occur north of Orlando, but we have seen massive 100 year storms in the past (Fay 2008) that did not cause widespread flooding damage in and around Orlando. If we get the dirty side of the eye, then wind damage to trees, structures, and power lines is much more of a concern than flooding. The coastal areas and Miami may have to deal with surge and flooding, but not very likely here.

The airlines can choose to cancel flights earlier than the airport close. The last thing they want is to have a plane stuck there during the storm, they probably want to get their planes rerouted earlier.
