Hurricane Irma?

It hasn't occurred to me to buy milk - I thought the point was to buy non-perishable items? Although I did buy a gallon of chocolate ice cream...

I don't live in a hurricane zone, but here when people stock up on bread and milk it is when a snow storm is coming. I'm assuming bread for sandwiches and milk for the kiddos, and since it is snowing you can just put perishables in a cooler outside is the power goes out. For a hurricane this would be terrible advice.

As much as I don't want to, I've decided that we will need to cancel or change our reservation. Even if Irma swings east and Orlando isn't hit, the traffic alone will most likely make it impossible to navigate (we were driving down). To top that off, I'm rather ill (stupid sinus cold) and probably would be useless in any sort of emergency situation. Plus, I just can't bring myself to drive into a category 5 hurricane when locals are evacuating.
Unless she miraculously dissipates, I'm just waiting for Disney to issue the warning at this point.
A very wise decision.

Oh I see! Yes, that would make perfect sense in a snow storm, and absolutely terrible sense in a hurricane. Thanks for clarifying, this Florida girl hasn't dealt with a snow storm in several years!

Everyone needs to decide for themselves, but the models over the past 12 hours show this thing moving. Will it? We won't know for another day or so, but if you hold out for a few more days, you may find that your vacation doesn't need to be scrapped. I recommend patience.

Models show it moving a little more east now.. But again, it still is not known yet. Nothing will be set in stone till end of the week I assume

Even best case scenario where it goes east of Florida, Orlando will still get rain and wind

I really hope this turns out well for those who choose to travel into the hurricane. I live about 300 miles inland from where Katrina made landfall. Keep in mind this is stronger than Katrina. There were tornados, trees down, no electricity or phone service for a week. There was no gas within 200 miles and the stations didn't have electricity to pump the gas. Again it took a week to recover, it was no vacation. Do not expect anyone to be there to care for you, be prepared to feed and care for yourself for a few days. I hope for all of Florida this thing turns but it's a gamble.
Yeah, I don't know if people honestly don't understand what can happen even with Cat 1 winds or if they are deliberately ignoring that info and making it harder for people that NEED lifesaving supplies to get them.

We are due to arrive Sept 8, and normally shop Public and or Whole Foods on the way to our resort. Seeing all the limited selections, anyone considering garden grocer?

FYI a friend of mine in Florida just texted me and said that they started contraflow on the interstates down in Miami. Can anybody else confirm?

I think whether to go or not depends on a lot of factors: If you have a longer trip, and are flying in before, I would still go unless the models change and show a direct hit.

If you have a short trip that is centered around the weekend (4 or 5 days) or are driving during that time, I would try to change the trip or cancel. Because even if it doesn't hit directly, you likely would have a few days of rain, and who wants to get rained out for half the trip? If you are driving, who wants to drive when you don't know if you'll be able to get gas?

We leave tomorrow night. I'm waiting until last min to cancel. We can't reschedule. 8 of us going and I called to check for later dates and none were available for that size. I'm pregnant due next April so won't be able to take a trip next year and we are bringing my mother in law into live with us that has dementia and needs 24 hour care in oct. This trip is now or years from now for us. Praying for a turn and safety of all.
Don't come if you're pregnant, hurricane's can induce labor because of the pressure. Since you aren't due for a while it might not happen, but the last thing you want is for you to go into labor early and be trapped out in the storm.

We have up to 10 mins before our flight leaves to cancel without pently. So we are going to hold out as long as we can and see what happens. We likely will have to cancel, get a full refund and then wait until next July to go. But for now we are going to wait it out and see. Our flight is Friday afternoon. I don't care if people say crossing your fingers and hope for the best doesn't work. We are still going to do that. We've spent months and month and lots of $$ into this trip like everyone else. I'll wait as long as I can to make a call.

Whole Foods might be OK, but Publix probably won't have much. If Garden Grocer is still an option, I would go with that.

That's great they could move you! People keep saying they can't get any rooms for October so I was wondering if anyone would be able to transfer their reservations.

Welcome to my month- don't bring any hurricanes with you! ;)

Thanks! Trust me I have no plans to bring any hurricane!! Lol It was hard to find a place in October but a few hotels had availability. We had to switch hotels. We are only going for 4 days (rest is beach vacation) so may have made it easier. Praying for great trips for both of us and most importantly everyone stays safe and sound!

So we've had a few days thinking and worrying and we're still going, I still seem to be the only one obscenely frightened by this but our travel agents and airline both say Orlando is safe to land tomorrow and that we shouldn't get the worst of it. But I'm sceptical of them.

I'm an hour north of Miami so not entirely sure down there, but that sounds really unlikely. That's last case scenario because they need police to block entrances. The storm won't be here for a few days so there's still time for people to leave. They did waive tolls. In the keys they might have done this since it's one bridge out

Super frustrating, huh? Have a trip planned for Night of Joy for my family, and trying to decide what to do is really hard with the lack of information Disney is putting out there. Family leaves tomorrow morning, but no word on cancellations of the concert, or anything in regards to Irma.
