Bonuses of Camping at Fort Wilderness?

Best food on Disney property as far as I'm concerned at Trails End.

I do a lot of my own cooking as well, which saves us a lot of money. If you are like we are, we like to have some down days along the way to actually be able to relax and vacation. In this case, no resort on property can match the Fort.

Holiday activities, site decorations, bike riding, walking, kinder neighbors, your own stuff. Man the list is so long. We stayed at POR, but after we stayed at the Fort, we never went back to another resort.

Oh yeah, and their is the wildlife all over the place, and sometimes on your roof, and your chair, and your picnic table.

I can sit outside at night and hear nothing.

When I first read that I thought it said "I can sit outside at night and wear nothing. I was like o_O.

Hey, that's cool...

I put together a thread to show rack rates at the Fort for 2017. These are non-discounted rates with tax rounded to the nearest dollar. It's helpful for planning purposes. Suffice it to say, the higher the rates - the more popular the campground is (and in demand).

Holy smokes those rates went up! Thanks a million, Bama Ed, for another awesome thread. However, I don't think the price will be the hindrance that keeps my husband at bay. It will be the clothing optional Loops.

Seriously, y'all are great advertisers for the Fort. I am really looking forward to making our way there in the coming years.

I don't have to worry about sneaking in my crock pot for food
I don't have to change sheets and pillowcases and worry about bed bugs

This are two big ones for us!

Never got the nerve to smuggle in a crock pot, but have brought microwave, convection oven, coffee pot, and cooler into the rooms. The cooler for drinks since the fridge is filled with foods. We never left any of these appliances out, when we left the room. I was concerned the smell of food cooking in a crock pot may have gotten us on the naughty list in a resort room. Thought about it, though.

For SA mom on when to reserve a site:

Very close to what we paid for our site. Ours was $8 less, but not sure if it was a FL resident thing or passholder thing or just luck.

We camp at the Fort once or twice a year and absolutely love it. We are normally there for Halloween and sometimes Spring Break. Everyone already told you all the good stuff. So I will just add my own. The kids have so much fun. Even if we don't go to a park. They make so many friends. The place is just so relaxed. It's probably that I am finally done with the 500 mile trip but when I pull into the Fort I literally feel like I'm in a better place. It really does feel like coming home. The price is a little steep but with all the extras I feel it's worth it.

1) I have to agree.
2) Viewing un-clothed squirrels can scare even little kids, let alone adults.
3) Squirrels are so independent.
. . . our fish frequently wear Speedos when in school
. . . our chipmunks keep spare clothes in their cheek pouches
. . . our gators are famous for their shoes and handbags

Our list is pretty similar to everyone here.

I prefer my own bed. I like the kids having their own beds. I like having a dining room table and a sofa plus the tv and DVDs if we need them. I like being able to cook although we rarely do but my husband can get up and make a sandwich in the middle of the night if he wants. For my husband his two musts while vacationing are having someplace other than a bed so sit on, such as a sofa and outdoor space. So camping in our trailer at the Fort fits the bill. We love sitting outside after a day in the parks, just taking in the peace.

And yes campers are a different breed. It's hard to explain to people that don't get camping, it's just something in our blood.

This for one
I don't have to put my tv remote in a plastic bag and worry about germs
I don't have to Lysol everything down after I get there

This has to be one of my top reasons I am excited to try the Fort for the first time.... to hopefully come home without the Disney plague. Our youngest threw up in the car 12 hours from home at 4am on our last trip, the virus that would go away too. Everytrip seems to be something. So willing this trip to be a healthy one!!!!

Hmmm..this thread is starting to make me wonder. We are tent campers who typically prefer rustic state parks. The high cost of campsites at the Fort has always made me hesitate. But one day, if we ever have the time to drive to Florida, I may consider it. For now, like in the case of OP, the Fort is more expensive for us (we typically visit during free dining and stay in a value). Plus, we don't live close enough to drive easily.

If not considering the theme parks, is there any big difference between the Fort and any other good campground? I'm curious - we have not spent much time in resort-like campgrounds. We tried it for a weekend once and liked it well enough.

1) The Fort has a "rustic camping" (Creek Side Meadows) area that is a plain as you get anywhere.
2) This is mostly used by groups like Scouts.
3) OK, so you can take the internal bus to a restaurant and comfort area.
4) But, the actual camping area is bare-bones.

We usually camp at state parks and occasionally national parks. We used to be tent campers but age really made me switch over to a hybrid trailer. I still get to sleep under canvas but i am off the ground. We love the outdoors and have camped all over the country. When we first got a trailer we tried camping at resort places and realized they weren't for us. The Fort though is totally different. It has all the amenities of a resort but it still feels peaceful. It's hard to explain, honestly we've never been someplace like this. And honestly we could stay cheaper at a value but it certainly isn't as comfortable or as beautiful or as convenient.

I haven't camped there yet, but the really cool when we visited FW was the Electric Water Parade. We watched it one night from the dock after the Hoop-dee-do Musical Revue. Our kids still talk about it. I bet no other campground has that...or the Hoop-de-doo Musical revue.

This is why we just bought our first travel trailer. As we've gotten older, the ground has gotten harder!
