Its Tough To Be A Bug Scary

I guess it could be if you are scared of bugs, it seems crazy to me that people would find it scary, but, I'm terrified of mice (apart from Mickey) and I used to hate the Honey I Shrunk The Audience attraction. So I guess it just depends on the individual.

I loved it, but when we took our then-4 year old to see it, he was terrified. It's really loud and dark, and there is a giant evil grasshopper (Hopper) who is pretty menacing. It scarred him enough that he still never wants to go see it - and he's 13 now! :)

Our experience having seen the show 4-5 times is that in every show at least one or two 4-6 year olds gets taken out while crying. It's not scary perse, but small kids can't process the special effects in the seats and some can't deal with the dark and the bugs seemingly moving towards them. Most everyone else finds it funny, a bit creepy, but funny.

Hate. HATE. That show. The special effects make me jump like a 2 year old every time! The show itself isn't scary on principle... it's the round things crawling under your butt and sharp things poking your back that scare me!

I don't know, I just don't get it, feels like home to me ..........

LOL!!

DW and I love ITTBAB! Yes it is intense in a couple of places and I can understand that some might be... bothered.

As I said in another thread, if I had seen it when I was a little kid I would have screamed.

DD was 10 when she first saw it. We were talking about the interesting posters in the queue and really looked forward to the show. But she was later terrified by the 3D and 4D effects. She hates bugs! Since then, she has refused to go. Well, I did make her go again the next year, thinking she might change her mind. NO! She hated it!! I don't think I would make her go again. I actually like the show and the 4D effects. Too bad!

My 5 year old, whose favorite ride was Tower of Terror, was PETRIFIED in the show. We had to leave. I was shocked because there is not much that scares her.

I'm not crazy about this show! I've been to it enough to know when some of the effects happen, so I lean away from the back of my chair so I don't get stung and lift my legs up so I don't feel the bugs, lol. There's always at least one child that I'm with who just hates it.

I have a phobia about bugs. I will do anything and everything at Six Flags, Universal, etc., but in my 4 trips to WDW, I have never seen ITTBAB, and I don't intend to ever see it. Just thinking about it gives me the heebie jeebies!

The same reason I don't go to bird shows, they have a fear of something (mine is bird - thanks to that movie)

maybe the parents didn't know full well that their kids would freak out.

I agree with @yulilin3 on this, I don't think you can tell from the outside that it's going to be as intense, though I do believe they have some warning signs. I really love the que, going under the tree, the posters, and the music while waiting. And all of that is completely ruined for me once I'm inside. My family finds it hilarious to watch me squirm, but it's really not a pleasant experience for me. I've even gone to the extreme to be sure to enter first so that I can exit with the people who are leaving the theater before us and I wait on the outside for my family. You can hear the screaming on the outside of the exit door and believe me it does not sound like a family friendly Disney show going on in there! I try to avoid this show if at all possible, just not for me.

Now the bird shows....could watch those all day and I spend a lot of time in the bird aviaries on the trails, they are my favorites!

they do have warning messages, but there's a couple of things for first timers: they might be chatting with their family and not listen, they might hear the warning message but disregard it because their kids have gone on scary roller coasters and they were fine, they might not speak English... My DD16 absolutely hates this show and avoids it as much as possible. If we have family or friends that are visiting for the first time she will very reluctantly go in but she sits on the edge, closes her eyes and gets up before the bugs leave

I am okay in that attraction and love the queue to enter. I am the only one in my family who will go back though. , Just like you and for those same reasons, the rest hate it. It's the special effects. They just don't like them. Once was one time too many.

A better question is why do so many parents take their little kids into this knowing full well that their kids are going to freak out? Happens every time I'm there.

Unless you know exactly what the effects are and how your child will react, how could you plan? I often wonder about parents who take their kids into Fantasmic and then do not leave when the children are scared. Not that they took them in the first place....we were told multiple times that this was a do not miss show...(thank goodness my DD found out that it would frighten my DGD) but we would have taken my DGD out if she was afraid. You just cannot always predict what kids or adults, for that matter, will feel in some attractions.

The other thing about being a first-timer is that maybe you read a lot about the attraction and got convinced that the bugs were cute and it was really a lot of fun. Then you got in there and it was only slightly less horrible than confronting a horde of insects in person. I was sitting in the center of a row and couldn't leave--and closing one's eyes only helps a bit, since the physical sensations are very buggy. Extremely very buggy. For anyone who doesn't like insects, this is not the place to be. Ever. Ditto the Behind the Seeds tour at The Land pavilion. The first 5 minutes of the tour are close-up encounters with insects.
