Nothing A Little Sangria Can't Fix! A Thanksgiving 2016 Dining Report update 3/21 MK eats

SNACKS IN MEXICO AND .......
DISNEY SPRINGS!

So on our long walk from FW to WS we discussed what we were feelin' like eatin'. Chris knew right away what he wanted and it didn't require a long walk around the world. However, since we were going outside Mexico for his snack I told him we had to first go inside Mexico for part of my snack - to La Cava to be exact:



I know I'm repeating myself from my TR but avocado margaritas deserve all the press they can get, because they are beautiful, refreshing AND delicious I think by now you've all read my description of this drink either in my previous dining report or my current TR, but I don't think I do a good job of describing it. It certainly doesn't taste like avocado and @Raeven recently tried one and agrees It's so much better than I thought it would be which is why I needed one again and will need one again, and again, and again.........
As I said before, Chris knew around probably 10:00 what he was having for his snack:



Churros from La Cantina De San Angel! He had these last year and loved them and I think he's been dreaming of them ever since. I have to admit they're very tasty, especially with the caramel dipping sauce that comes with them.
Since I had my something sweet I decided to get something savory:



Empanadas-fried flour tortillas filled with cheese, served with Mexican slaw.
These were very tasty and I loved the slaw, it was so fresh. Chris wanted to try one so we each ended up eating 1.5 empanadas, I ate all the slaw, and he let me have a churro. Nice kid!
Full once more we took a ride with the Three Caballeros and watched some new (to us) WS entertainment. That was followed by some really quick shopping which is basically the only kind of shopping my boys do, and we were ready to go back to Beach Club for a short stop before catching a bus to our evening destination. Yes my friends, the one I promised you earlier in this report and then failed to deliver-
Disney Springs!!! Whoo hoo!!!!! Yeah, baby!
Except it's not that exciting. We had a nice time but you know, it's a shopping mall now with some Disney stuff thrown in......
I worked on my selfie-taking skills while we waited for the bus since both boys claim I don't know how to take them:

Before long we pulled up to the "new" Disney Springs. Despite Steve and I having made trips to Disney in January and August without the boys, none of us had been here since last Nov. so I was anxious to see the changes, and that included eating somewhere new. Originally we had Il Mulino booked for tonight but when we became a duo I opened the evening up to suggestions and DS looked good to Chris.
All I'll say here is WOW, completely changed from our last visit

We got over our shock enough to find Chris's choice for dinner:



It was between here and D'Luxe burger and he said he was in the mood for pizza. I'd read a couple good reviews of Blaze so I was up for it.
The line was out the door at 5:15 and I thought we were in for a long wait but it moved quickly, which was good because it had turned pretty chilly outside! Soon we were in and I had no idea how this place worked:



Luckily I'm a quick learner and we realized it's kind of like an assembly line; you either choose one of their specialty pizzas or a create your own, and if you choose the latter you tell them everything you want on it. You can also watch them put it together and then they pop it in the oven and you pay.
It was crowded inside but we weren't about to sit at an outside table, so after getting our drinks we stalked someone sitting inside and then jumped in their booth as they left. It was only about 5 minutes later that our pizzas came out. Mine:


Create Your Own Pizza with sauteed onions and crumbled bacon.
This was good, especially the sauteed onions. And when I say good I mean if anyone in my family wanted to eat here again I wouldn't protest too hard, although I'd probably try suggesting somewhere else none of us have eaten before. However you must know I'm a pizza snob being from NY. I love Via Napoli pizza and I do like one flatbread at Pinocchio's but otherwise, and no getting mad guys, I've never had pizza outside of NY, NJ or CT that I like. Sorry!!
Chris on the other hand loved his:


Create Your Own Pizza with red onions. He enjoyed it so much that he ate all but one slice. I left two so I guess I really did enjoy it
We spent some time exploring the newer sections of the Springs and finally came to the real reason Chris was eager to visit, which was the new store opened by Michael Jordan's son Marcus called The Trophy Room:



In addition to selling shoes, clothing, and hats, you'll find some MJ memorabilia inside.
We were both in the mood for dessert but weren't sure what we wanted. I also wasn't sure of the layout of new stores but we eventually found Amorette's and went inside. Did we come out empty handed? Nope!
Chris picked out a chocolate mousse:


I forgot to take a picture so thank you Google. He ate half of this and said it was very good but very chocolaty and very filling. I would have loved to try it but as you'll see, I got a whole cake! Well, a Petit Cake:


How adorable is the box it's in??



Can you understand why I couldn't resist this $15 cake for myself? It's the Amorette's Petit Cake, eleven layers of red velvet cake, chocolate cake, cherry mousse, chocolate mousse, raspberry Pate De Fruit jelly and Italian buttercream. Now let me say this was delicious and decadent. Also very rich so I only ate a small piece that night. Plus maybe a second teeny tiny sliver an hour after the first small piece I do want to mention as many of you probably know or noticed that the frosting is fondant-like, not your basic butterceam frosting. I'm not a huge fondant fan but this was better than your average fondant, it had more flavor and wasn't quite as hard. My preference would still be a cake covered with a container (or two) of Betty Crocker frosting because again, CLASS, but I will definitely be returning to Amorette's as soon as possible. After our snacks back in the room I called Steve to check in as he and Ricky would be arriving the next day While we were on the phone I stepped out on to the balcony to catch Illuminations again:



And then I commented to Steve that not only could we see Illuminations from the balcony, we could see the new Jingle Bell, Jingle Jam fireworks! Nice way to end the night:



This was a great day of eats even though we only had one big meal! We went to sleep with happy bellies looking forward to being a family of 4 again the next day!

Oh god, lady, do NOT eat pizza on cape cod. They have this abomination called "bar pizza" which is a greek style pizza... (if they have feta cheese in any salad at a pizza place, run... run very fast!) which is basically pan pizza that comes out tasting like it is deep fried in oil they put so much oil in the pan. Also too much cheese, too many toppings. I'm from Brooklyn, born and raised, and am a fuge pizza snob but have had to adapt a bit to pizza outside of NY. In general anything brick oven and neopolitan style is decent but I never really eat pizza at Disney because it's not going to be the best I ever had and I can get decent pizza here... there is a place that puts beer in the crust and it's nice and crispy with cornmeal on the bottom and their toppings are all off the hook and freshly made (homemade sausage, the most delicious sauteed mushrooms etc) and their homemade san martzano tomato sauce is pizzafection. I like to eat things I can't get at home. Like maine lobster (ha ha, that's a joke!) But who knows, Blaze seems like a decent option if the mood ever strikes me and I NEED PIZZA but I'd like to try that poutine place.

your mexico pictures look great. I am so sad now that i missed the avocado margarita. First time in mexico I was so hot I didn't want any booze. Second time I was so stuffed I didn't want to put another thing in my mouth. Those empenadas look yummy too but I am not a slaw person! Kiddo would love the churros. I think we're going to have to make this a priority next time.

Good yummy update! I'm currently trying to get back on the healthy eating kick and these reviews are NOT helping one bit! The pizza looks good but we are eating at Via Napoli and PizzeRizzo so I think we are topped out on pizza next trip. Might have to check it out at some point though (see, my next next trip dining options are almost filled up bc of this report!), along with D-Luxe based on @Raeven 's reviews.

Oh I am so excited to hit up Amorrette's! I was looking at the mousse on the menu but I'm going to hold off on deciding until I am there.

We have a place locally that has the same service style as Blaze, and the kids love it, so I know they'd like Blaze too. It has to be better than the Boardwalk pizza window that is coming up soon in my report, because...how can I be subtle about this...

I guess subtlety isn't my specialty, LOL!

We had Amorette's too! Matt got the same cake that you did, and it is so beautiful. I did think the fondant was much better than usual, it was sweet and kind of marshmallowy, which was good. We weren't blown away by the desserts we had there, unfortunately. I had a raspberry pavlova that was good, but nothing to write home about, and both boys had mini Mickey dome cakes. I only got a teensy bite of L's before he threatened to stab me with his fork. The kids don't understand that I need to try all the things so I can come back and tell people about them!! Darn kids. I also got some macarons, because they're my favorite, and I ended up throwing them away They just weren't good. X spit one out. I don't think he's ever spit a dessert out EVER. Except for the time he lost a tooth in the birthday brownie at Ohana, and he kind of had to.
I love to bake, so I think I have the cake/dessert version of your pizza thing!

I'm glad your experience with Amorette's was much better!! Maybe it was because we were there later in the night and the stuff had been sitting out all day?? I don't know. I do have to say, Chris' chocolate thing looks really good though!

I had an Avocado Margarita in 2013 and was VERY disappointed by it. Weak and flavorless. This made me sad as I had been looking forward to it for MONTHS. That said, It was CRAZY busy that night. Since everyone still raved about them I am thinking I might give it another try next week. I love both avocados and margaritas so I really want to love this

The avocado margarita is on my list. I didn't get to try it on my trip but did try a regular margarita from La Cantina. It was okay but seems boring next to the avocado one. We also got the nachos but next time I'm getting the empanadas and might as well throw in an order of churros with it.

You bring up a good point, in all honesty we've eaten at WPE but have NOT had the pizza there, and I read great reviews of it here all the time. I've even commented that I need to try it so I have to do that before I say again that VN and the Pinocchio flatbread are the only types of pizza in Disney that I like!

Actually no, which was great because I'm not a huge cherry fan. I prefer raspberry The cherry flavor was very subtle and kind of mixed in with the chocolates and red velvet but the texture was great.

I'm from Brooklyn, born and raised, and am a fuge pizza snob but have had to adapt a bit to pizza outside of NY.

It's a travesty and a hardship all of us New Yorkers are forced to deal with when leaving the Big Apple state

Oh man, sorry it was a disappointment last time. Definitely try it again and maybe go to La Cava if you had it at San Angel last time. I know some have said they think it's sometimes a pre-mix but at La Cava I watched them make it for me, fresh avocado and all

True, as far as fancy cakes go the cost definitely wasn't bad. Going in I wasn't expecting to spend $15 on a snack for myself lol, but hey, I'm worth it

I did the same thing in January of last year; got a regular margarita from La Cantina because the line for La Cava was crazy. It wasn't anything special and right there and then I vowed I'd have the avocado on our next trip, and that's exactly what I did last August!
I really like the QS choices in Mexico even though there are more "exotic" choices available, and some that aren't as readily available at home as Mexican food is. We're always satisfied when we snack there.

He did! Basketball seems like the poor mans sports because it doesn't get as much love as football and baseball, so it's nice to have something there basketball-related. And yes on the cake, you guys should stop by Amorette's in March.

The Culinary Institute of America is 20 minutes from me in Hyde Park, NY. At my old job we would sometimes get wedding cakes from their baking class to eat in my office (long story). They were some of the most beautiful cakes you've ever seen-and then you'd take a bite of hard, almost plastic fondant It made me long for a Duncan Hines cake with regular frosting!

It might have been the worst pizza ever. If we hadn't have been exhausted and starving when we got it, we would have thrown it away and found something else.

I *think* the dome cakes were good?? From the tiny bit I had of L's, I liked it. It was kind of chocolate mousse like with a cakey center. X got to the middle and was like, "Oh. It's a real cake in there! I had no idea!". They looked so cute! Both boys asked if they had any minis in different characters, but the lady kept saying, "you have to special order that. You have to special order that" so they settled for Mickey, but they liked it. We have a local bakery that makes the dome cakes, but I haven't had any of theirs...it's kind of inconvenient to get to, so I forget about it until they post on instagram.

The signature cake was so beautiful, you had to get it! If Matt hadn't gotten one I was going to. I panic ordered my pavlova. Their cases were kind of bare, so the choice was pretty limited, really.

I like the macarons from France! And I like others I've had on Disney property, too. The Mickey Macaron at Disneyland was one of my favorite desserts ever! But the ones from Amorettes were just blech. I suppose it could have been a fluke and I got a bad batch?? My favorite ones on earth are from a bakery called Sucre in New Orleans. Matt special orders them for me on our anniversary usually (we first had them on our honeymoon there), and they are perfection. One of our local bakeries makes pretty good ones, and there's a specialty macaron bakery here that I've yet to try called Alchemy Macarons. It looks intimidating so I've never been in, LOL!!

The ones from Amorettes were hard and crunchy instead of tender, and the flavors were very artificial tasting.

We'll probably give it another try when we're in Disney Springs! The call of baked goods is strong, and yummy scents can make a person forget a subpar experience pretty easily!
