Great Comment on the radio yesterday

We didn't have any political family drama today. All it takes is a medical emergency and all that other stuff goes out the window. My 80 yr old FIL fell, broke his hip/leg and was taken by ambulance to the hospital where he is now waiting for hip replacement surgery. My very conservative husband and his very liberal brother spoke multiple times between yesterday and today and not one time did the election ever come up. Given FIL's health, upcoming surgery, rehab after surgery and my MIL needing lots of assistance, I doubt politics will come up over the next few weeks as we prepare for a Christmas together and whatever that my look like.

Not the way you want to dodge that particular bullet, but I hope your FIL heals well.

For many people, this is more than "Just politics" This isn't like fighting over football teams. I agree that arguing over sport would be idiotic. Which team wins a game has no consequences in anyone's life, except for those on the team.

Now, elections have consequences. Life altering, even life or death consequences. Many people feel this way, so I don't think their feelings are "extreme"

OMG!!! drama, life or death - really ??!?

I guess that's a personal choice you have made, to stay focused on everything dire that could happen. But if you just looked around you, has anything "life threatening" happened?

I know & I was speaking in general - that said, my point still stands. You wanna change hearts & minds, you do it with open dialogue. And you (general you) might be careful how you use the word "hate".

I agree with open dialogue. And I'm quite comfortable in how I, personally, use the word "hate," just as I did in this thread, for example. Others may, of course, speak for themselves.

I think if I had to be around or host loud mouthed boorish people, whether family or friends, I'd change plans. This is regarding any topic not just politics.

As a woman and the mother of a minority child the climate in certain parts of this country and from certain groups of people is scary and sad. I'm fortunate to live in a culturally diverse area and have loving and accepting family and friends.

I feel for those who don't have support and are frightened for the future.

And no, you can't fling racist and sexist remarks from here to kingdom come and then say let's just all come together and sing kumbaya.

My thoughts exactly.

I totally agree. However, I choose to live by example, not by yelling at others and telling them they are wrong and I'm right. That's counterproductive. Violence and anger cause an escalation in violence and anger. Nothing else.

Fortunately, no politics at our table today. I might have heard one quick joke, but all were sensible and just glad to be together with family

Same for me. One joke, but no serious talk of politics...In fact, it was quite drama-free in general, which I think most everyone was thankful for!

Yes, life or death

Unfortunately, due to forum rules I can't really discuss the issue here. I don't know how to do it without breaking rules and getting points. The only thing I can say, it's to look a history and watch the news to get my point

Nope, obviously the right move is to tell them how wrong & how awful they are just before cutting them out of your life. That's how we progress ;)

Yes. Because if you haven't figured out by now that being a racist, homophobic, christian nutter that is intolerant of other religions (or lack thereof) makes you an *******, I'm not wasting my time. I like a good shunning!

A friend had 3 extra snowflake millennials who wouldn't go home for holiday because they were all butt hurt parents voted Trump. If they were mine, now you pay your own tuition.

As an "extra snowflake millennial" who luckily have parents who share my political views...I have friends who didn't go home for the holiday because their parents made it clear to them, through their vote, that they weren't unconditionally accepted. I don't know how else to say this without getting political, but some people literally do not feel safe around their families after hearing who they voted for.

Speaking up when someone is degrading another doesn't automatically equate to yelling, violence, or anger. I'm not sure if that was what you meant, but that is how your comment read, at least to me.

I just find this the most ridiculous thing ever. So my parents were good on Monday but by Wednesday they're dangerous. LOL!!!! This is just the "I'm offended" & need my "safe space" world that helicopter parents have created for this snowflake world.

I've said it before & it bears repeating - a person's vote (whichever way) is not a glimpse into the heart & mind of that voter. The whole "if you voted for X you must be a ___" notion is not only dead wrong, but is the epitome of bigoted stereotyping.

I really think a LOT of people need to listen to what Michael Moore has had to say about this election and what he has had to say about those who didn't vote the way he wanted them to.

I'm offended by Micheal Moore, so he's not safe anymore:rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:
