>> Smoking at Disney Resorts FAQ <<

According to the maps on the Disney site there is only one smoking area in Magic Kingdom that is by Big Thunder Mountain. Is this correct? I thought there was one on the pathway between Fantasyland and Tomorrowland? It also shows one outside the park at the main entrance.

I read on another thread yesterday (can't remember where though :o) there was only two DSA's available now in the MK. By BTMRR and I believe they listed another on the back walkway between Fantasyland and Tomorrow. Ticks me off...they keep shutting the DSA's down and then people complain because they see smokers "lighting up anywhere". :headache: Well...you limit the DSA's that WILL be that happening. I, myself, would not but really aggravating they're shutting so many down. The one behind Space Mountain was WONDERFUL! W-A-Y off the "beaten path" so as not to bother anyone. I loved the one at the entrance to Adventureland but it's been removed. I guess I do understand that one being in a "pathway" but sure would be nice if they could find another available area close to the front of the park. :headache: Now that I think about it, they may have shut the one on the back pathway down too because I remember reading on the same thread they'd added one close to the resort boat launches. Explain THAT...talk about "in a major pathway". :confused3:tink:

This is not really resort related but the pathway between fastasyland and tomorrowland at the dog park is still there and a new one outside of the gates.

Hopefully it is, but as of 30June the one outside of Fantasyland is no longer shown as a DSA.

It was in a weird spot that was far worse than the tree by adventureland for people that had to walk past. I'll be around this weekend and will let you know. maybe it's only during the holiday with the bigger fireworks display that fires all over the place.

Love the post, always nice to see helpful information on the boards. The past 4 years I've made it a habit to go out and find a bench/fountain near by my room with cigar and a glass of scotch. Mind you it's typically pretty close to 10PM when I do this, but nothing has been said to me yet. Hopefully I continue not to run in to any issues. I find this is a nice way to wind the day down.
It is not acceptable to break the policy. Sorry, but true.

How would they know if you vape in your room

Last trip, I was talking to a fellow vaporizer user and he told me he set off the smoke alarm in his room by vaping. I thought it was hilarious. I did a bit of research and found that it is possible to set off most alarms with vapor. There are 3 types of triggering mechanisms in an alarm - optical, ionization, and heat. Heat is the only one that won't be triggered by vapor, but these are the types of alarms that are typically in kitchens. Optical and ionization are more common for regular rooms.

My BIL has set off the alarm at 3 different hotels from vaping.

Now, this confuses me to a degree. ECIGS emit water vapor. If an ECIG could trigger a smoke alarm? So would other Water Vapor sources - showers, boiling water from a coffee pot .... all of which emit far MORE Water Vapor. So... given the emission mechanism of an ECIG, it sounds, on the surface, as though people should really WATCH OUT for the consequences of taking a Hot Shower in these rooms, with the bathroom door open :).

Might there be particulates in the Water Vapor? Totally possible. Same is true of brewing coffee (one can "smell" it - quick, how does that work?). Also true of any aerosol (like lysol spray) that one can smell. I would worry about brewing coffee or using disinfectants in any of these rooms :).

You see, smoke detectors are optimized to detect combustion particulates - for a reason. If they were not built this way? Every house in the US would get rid of them, as a nuisance :). One COULD design a "smoke detector" that would react to ANY airborne particulate.... including atomized perfume - or a human passing gas:). But I don't think something like that would see a huge sales volume :). In WDWs case - the concern is room degradation (lingering smell), or damage (fire), from a resident smoking classic materials. Totally reasonable.

So - if WDW has installed "smoke detectors" capable of detecting airborne water vapor particulates? Wellllllll - that's going to trigger a LOT of alarms. Their choice :).

All personal opinion - I'm not right, you aren't wrong, not choosing to reply to quotes....

Ecigs don't emit water vapor. They emit vegetable glycerin, propylene glycol and nicotine vapor. You can look up numerous videos of people setting off "smoke" alarms with ecigs/vaporizers. I vape a ton but when I am at DW, I go outside to use it at a smoking section. Not worth the risk of setting off the alarm.

Do they still have the smoking areas on the second floors of Samoa and Niue buildings at the Polynesian?

As long as you are in the designated areas and not blowing smoke onto others, you're good. Though I've seen the authorities reprimand a gentleman once for smoking outside the zone.

Thank you for posting this thread. I have an allergy to tobacco smoke and cannot be around smokers for long, otherwise I fall very ill and need considerable time and a proper environment to bounce back. It's good to know which areas I absolutely need to avoid.

can you still look up smoking areas for restorts and parks on the App? I am not seeing how. Already looked on the park maps just want to be sure DH can find one when he needs one. Should be a Wilderness Explorer badge for finding them at AK :D

you can but it's annoying.. It's "designated smoking areas" under guest services but then narrowing down to where you are and where they really are is the pain. I've found getting a map and then keep zooming to where you are to work sort of ok...

there's a lot of places that are wrong or not listed though so in addition to the app, just keep your eye open for ashtrays when walking around.

Just spent 9 days on property at POP. Had a cigar or 3 each day, at the hotel at night, no one seemed to mind, we sat out on a bench overlooking the lake. A few nights just strolling around the outskirts of the buildings. If it was daytime I used the smoking area by the 60's pool. Never had any issues, just be respectful of others and you'll usually be fine.
