Had to finally book with NCL because Disney wanted me to sell my house... lol

Smoke free casino? Tell me more! I didn't realize the Escape casino was smoke-free!

The news came out on CC over the past few days. The casino is entirely smoke free for the time being (except for the VIP room, if I read the posts correctly). Apparently NCL is in the process of building a glassed-in ventilated area for smokers in the casing, but that project has not yet been started.

Yes. For now no smoking in the casino. The retro fit is supposed to take place in November. The dates I've seen line up with the work being done once the ship gets to Miami. If the ship will sit for a few days for press events without overnight passengers (I don't know, just thinking out loud) I would think those nights would be a great time to get this done.

Additionally, the Epic, Breakaway, & Getaway are supposed to get this same retro fit.

WOW! This is awesome! The one thing that has kept me from switching our Nov. 2016 cruise to NCL was the comments I heard regarding the smoky casino. This could be a sign. As an severe asthmatic, this is welcome news to our family.

Thanks y'all! :)

I think this is a great BOLD move by NCL. And they are likely to get more of my business because of it! I didn't find the smoke too bad on Epic but I've heard it's worse on Breakaway/Getaway. I'm glad they are addressing it.

Wow, that is nice to hear. I didn't notice any smoky smell on the Star in spring, and hadn't given any thought at all about it when we booked the Escape for April. But we just got back from what is probably our last DCL (number 15) and eight nights at WDW. The day after getting home, we booked the Epic for Nov 2016 since it will be out of port Canaveral, and the first thing I read about that ship was how the smoke from the casino fills the atrium/central area. Glad to know it is being addressed as well.

I did the Epic last December. I am very sensitive to smoke and I didn't find it that bad at all. Of course it can change cruise to cruise since it's a different set of passengers. The Epic was wonderful and I hope you enjoy her too. And request "naughty Disney songs" at Howl at the Moon. I laughed so hard.

If only they could do that on Carnival ships too... (Trying the Sunshine next year) I want to try the casino but the idea of smoke grosses me out!

I seem to be the opposite of most people in this thread. My first (and so far only) cruise experience was on the NCL Star back in 2010. They are the reason we booked on DCL this time around.

The cruise started with amazing service and tons of fun. It ended with the majority of the ship going "LAND!!!" and kissing the ground when we returned. I wish I was kidding. People were actually yelling to be let off this ..... I won't say because this is a Disney board. I will leave it up to your imagination.

I think something happened during the unscheduled dry dock right before we sailed. The ship did not come back completed so many areas were closed. Not a lot to do. 90% of the crew was cranky from day 1. Maybe there was some behind the scenes drama or a nasty bug. Who knows. They completely gave up by the time we left PV. Many activities were canceled without warning or not even scheduled for those days. The food was terrible, as was the service. Our one decent meal was at Le Bistro, which is a premium restaurant. We felt like dollar signs instead of valued passengers.

Our time off the ship was lovely though, so it wasn't a total loss.

I am glad to hear they finally started doing things right. I think when I sailed they were still trying to figure out this "extra fee" thing. "How can we make people spend more?" Still a bit hesitant to sail with them again but maybe I will look into it if the prices stay low.

I've spent a lot of time in an ICU waiting room this past week and I've had lots of folks asking me about my recent cruise on the Getaway (It was fabulous, bought two future cruise credits while onboard).

Some who know me well enough to know I've cruised DCL for years asked me about doing a Disney cruise. I've told them unless they are just Disney fanatics who are cruising to hang out with Disney characters they are much better off cruising NCL or RCCL.

I think so many people get comfortable with what they know, and hear stories about crappy service, etc on other cruise lines, they never make a move. I understand as you don't want to waste valuable vacation time and money on a bad experience.

I know we hesitated for the same reason. We are so glad we stepped out there and took a chance! After our January cruise with friends on the Fantasy, no way will I go back to DCL with their pricing. I now consider it an inferior product at current pricing.

I will probably sail one more time, to reach Platinum. I might sail them again if I find a great rate or (eventually) do a TA or Panama Canal cruise, since those cruises are in line with pricing from other lines. But I agree; there are plenty of other lines out there and I enjoyed the three I have been on. I think Royal and NCL for ME offer more than Disney does, but I am concerned about their older ships since I didn't enjoy Enchantment of the Seas.

We are going to go with RCCL Liberty out of Galveston after we do the two cruises we already have booked with Disney ( this Christmas and then a TransAtlantic we booked on board) . Does anyone know the Liberty and can give advice or info?

I've been on Freedom, Liberty's sister, and had an awesome time. Try the RCCL board on here. :)

Just returned from the 10 night Inaugural Transatlantic crossing of the NCL Escape. Had an absolute fantastic time. Since I know quite a few posters are booked on it for upcoming cruises, I thought I would give you my thoughts.

The ship is absolutely beautiful to me. In terms of decor, very similar to GA and BA but IMO, a bit more understated. The public areas are nice and open and everything flows well together. The smoke free casino was awesome!! My mom and I stayed in a 2 bdrm Haven family Villa so our experiences and impressions are based on that. Below are a some things that stood out for me:

Things I loved:

*Beautiful public areas. A variety of venues each night with live music.

Margaritaville - Restaurant and bar- food complimentary -the menu was wonderful and delicious. Conch fritters, fish tacos and key lime pie...Amazing!!

*Food Republic - Fantastic!! Ala Carte restaurant. A large variety of small plates and sushi. Most dishes were made to share. Two people could easily order about 4 items to share for around $20 and not walk away hungry. The menu was very innovative with an amazing combination of flavors. My mom and I loved it so much we went 3 times for lunch and once for dinner. LOL

*Most of the complimentary as well as the specialty restaurants have new, upgraded menus.

*Ala Carte pricing. Being able to order and pay for just what you want was very nice.

*Ropes course - just as fun if not better than the GA and BA

*Smoke free casino!!!

*The gym is much more spacious and open. Not closed off into two sections like the GA and BA.

*Entertainment was absolutely fantastic:

*Supper Club - the John Hughes based “For the Record” was great. I was an 80’s teen and saw all of the movies and knew the songs.

*After Midnight - Amazing show with some really talented dancers

*Million Dollar Quartet- this was my favorite of all of them. It’s a show I’ve seen on stage in Chicago. This cast and shortened production on the Escape was exceptional.

* The comedians at the Headliners were really funny and dueling pianos of Howel at the Moon was just as fun as on the other ships.

*The staff was wonderful. So friendly and outgoing. Saw the Captain and officers out and about often interacting with guests. Our room steward was excellent. Our Butler and concierge totally spoiled my mom.

*The Haven. Wow!! I’ve sailed in the Haven on every class of ship that has one. The Escape’s IMO, the best. The made the depth of the pool deeper so you can comfortably swim laps. Two hot tubs in main haven and finally one on the outdoor sundeck. They also included the retractable roof that they included on the Breakaway. Bigger Haven restaurant with an outdoor dining area. Finally a new and upgraded Haven restaurant menu. All pay per view movies except for Adult movies were complimentary for Haven guests.

Things I didn’t like:

  • the food at the Supper Club was pretty blah, a bit too dark to even properly eat your food.
  • Internet was awful. Very slow at times, lots of page timeouts
  • hard sell at the spa
  • not a great variety of merchandise in the shops. I don’t believe I’ve ever sailed on a ship that didn’t sell swimsuits. If you wanted jewelry and watches, you were in luck.
  • This may be Transatlantic specific because of the older than average crowd. Lack of activities for those of us more active.
  • Another thing that may be TA specific was that they ran out of somethings and/or somethings were not stocked. I know that they did not have coffee pods for the coffee makers in the standard rooms.

One thing I heard from some of my fellow CCers was that room service was very slow which I find that totally unacceptable since they charging for it for regular rooms. As Haven guest's we did not experience that at all, food was delivered quick and hot from whatever restaurant we chose.

That’s about it. We thoroughly enjoyed it. Once I can find a date that works for all 3 of my DDs, I will be booking the Escape again. I know they will love it.

Wow, thanks for the great review, loved reading it and hearing your thoughts. I've been following all the activity since it arrived in Miami on Twitter, so it was nice to hear from someone on here firsthand. Can't wait to sail it in April!

Thanks for they great review. We are booked on her next June can not wait to to sail on her.

Just wanted to add another good review for the GA.

At first I wasn't too sure about it. I did not like the decor going in or the smelly casino but everyday I loved it more and more. Even had a blast one night at the smelly casino. Loved all the entertainment and things to do. The kids club while not fancy it was terrific my kid who is really shy got lots of one on one attention and all the counselors were really sweet. Hand scooped ice cream included in the price fare and the food in general was way better than disney in my opinion.

The things I missed about the fantasy were the wave phones, and castaway cay. Great Stirrup Cay was really crowded and impossible to find a chair.

The shows? We just watched burn the floor and legally blonde we liked them both. I did not watched the disney shows though as our twins were just 19 months old at that time and did not sit still. Other than that I loved all the things to do at night time and wish I went out more at night but for the most part we were exhausted at the end of the day and went to bed early.
