News Round Up 2016

Not entirely...

Alice in wonderland, Cinderella, and malificent all did well.

I'm sure beauty and the beast will too.

This particular "effort"...looks misguided. At least from the trailer

I think the problem with Jungle Book is it won't have an audience.

Maleficent, Alice, Cinderella as fairy tales come to life is one thing. They are in the traditional world of fantasy, ala fairies, fantastic worlds, etc. Teenagers and adults can enjoy them. Kids? Not so much as they lacked the cartoon comfort and the stories were darker and more mature.

Now, Jungle Book. Well, you have the normal human world but talking animals. Not animated talking animals. Actual, legit looking talking animals. There's a point where its just shall we say odd. 2 hours of a talking bear, monkey, and snake? Not sure I am interested in that. My son? Definitely not as it'd freak the you know what out of him. My daughter? Not her type of movie (not fantasy enough). So... I'm struggling to find the audience? What I think we may end up with here is a technically successful, CGI defining, flop. Princesses and fairies and worlds of fantasy can be presented in a live production movie. Even parallel worlds that are hidden (ala Harry Potter) ok. Cute talking puppy kids films? Ok. Legit actual bears and snakes that talk in a movie that is too dark (assuming here) for kids under 9? No audience.

I have a similar concern with this one. I don't think the CGI is the issue, I know people online tend to be critical of it, but there's no evidence that general audiences mind that at all, and based on the trailer this is high quality CGI.

The problem is who is the target audience? It seems like they're playing up the "action and adventure" aspects but it's still talking animals so I don't see them getting the teenage audience and it's way too scary for young kids. If they were aiming for a Pirates of the Caribbean vibe then the trailer isn't showing it.

The Circle of Life film in the land Pavillion is closed for refurb.

How many vacations did this ruin?

Online cancelling my trip that starts on Wednesday right now! Picketing and online message board thread bombing to start as soon as I'm off the phone.

Between this, Soarin, Vader, Bugs Life playground, and channeling anger over all the closures in California, I've had it! Shut the place down for the next 3 years and redo everything, except of course all the classics, don't redo those. Or anything Walt personally oversaw. And while they are at it, bring back some of the classics, like Toads Wild Ride and Captain EO.

:D

Yes - that's what I meant. Live action end if you look at the slate for the next 5 years, it's all Marvel, Star Wars, and live action remakes - with the occasional feel-good real-life drama thrown in. (The Finest Hours is the next one of these.) Oh wait, there's a Pirates of the Caribbean sequel...

...It's why I was rooting hard for Tomorrowland to be a success. Admittedly John Carter, Lone Ranger, and Tomorrowland weren't great, but them all tanking badly is gonna make Disney gunshy on trying original ideas.

To keep with a news thread - here's Disney's current slate for the next two years:
January 29th 2016: "The Finest Hours"
March 4th 2016: "Zootopia"

April 15th 2016: "The Jungle Book"
May 6th 2016: "Captain America: Civil War"
May 27th 2016: "Alice Through the Looking Glass"
June 17th 2016: "Finding Dory"
July 1th 2016: "The BFG"
August 12th 2016: "Pete's Dragon"
November 4th 2016: "Doctor Strange"
November 23rd 2016: "Moana"
December 16th 2016: "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story"

March 17th 2017: "Beauty and the Beast"
March 31st 2017: "Ghost in the Shell"
May 5th 2017: "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2"
June 16th 2017: "Cars 3"
July 7th 2017: "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales"
November 3rd 2017: "Thor: Ragnarok"
November 22nd 2017: "Coco"
December 22nd 2017: Untitled Disney Fairytale Project (Live Action)
Dec 2017: "Star Wars: Episode VIII"

I highlighted in red the projects that are "Original" - and that's stretching it. After The Finest Hours, 3 are animated. The BFG I will give them credit for at least it has not been put to film before. The last one, Ghost in the Shell isn't really original - but seeing as it is a remake of Japanese Manga - I will give this one a pass as it is at least original to Disney. (And Disney is only co-financing this one.)

Don't get me wrong - I am looking forward to a lot of these movies. But there's not a lot of risk here.

Ghost in the Shell is based on an anime film, and they're catching serious heat for casting a white lead.
