CA Gov signs the vaccination bill in to law

My point is that the info is old. Most "big pharma" has eliminated R+D, replacing it with the purchase of many start-ups with promising pipelines.

You asked a question, I provided some insight. Your point was irrelevant to me.

Fun fact...a quick check of Merck's site reveals over 35 vaccines in Phase II or beyond.

Did they originate in Merck's pipeline or were they purchased during R+D?

Why does that matter? Honest question - I don't know why you care.

Your original comment in this line of posts questioned another poster's claim of 300 vaccines in the pipeline. When they provided a link, you questioned how many of the companies listed were still operational. I provided some inking that most were. What does any of that, though, have to do with whether the info is outdated?

ETA: I don't know if you looked at the list in the article, but smaller companies were listed along with big pharma. Not sure if that matters or not, as I'm still confused as to your line of thinking.

Simple, do you as a teacher, investigate every fact that you teach?

As for the claim of over 300 vaccines, the quoted report fell short of 300.

Who will give those high doses of Vitamin C to poor and needy kids who don't get it in their diet?

death of a Clallam County woman this spring was due to an undetected measles infection that was discovered at autopsy.

The woman was most likely exposed to measles at a local medical facility during a recent outbreak in Clallam County. She was there at the same time as a person who later developed a rash and was contagious for measles. The woman had several other health conditions and was on medications that contributed to a suppressed immune system. She didn’t have some of the common symptoms of measles such as a rash, so the infection wasn’t discovered until after her death. The cause of death was pneumonia due to measles.

This tragic situation illustrates the importance of immunizing as many people as possible to provide a high level of community protection against measles. People with compromised immune systems often cannot be vaccinated against measles. Even when vaccinated, they may not have a good immune response when exposed to disease; they may be especially vulnerable to disease outbreaks. Public health officials recommend that everyone who is eligible for the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine get vaccinated so they can help protect themselves, their families, and the vulnerable people in their community.

Measles is highly contagious even before the rash starts, and is easily spread when an infected person breathes, coughs, or sneezes. If you're not protected, you can get measles just by walking into a room where someone with the disease has been in the past couple of hours.

Children should be vaccinated with two doses of MMR vaccine, with the first dose between 12 and 15 months and the second at four-to-six years. Adults born after 1956 should have at least one measles vaccination; some people need two. The state Department of Health immunization program has online information about measles and measles vaccine.

The measles diagnosis for the Clallam County woman brings the state’s case count to 11, and is the sixth in Clallam County for the year. The last active case of measles in Washington this year was reported in late April. Within about three weeks of exposure to someone with measles, it’s possible to develop the disease. Since more than three weeks has already passed since the last active measles case, no one who had contact with one of the known cases is any longer at risk for developing measles from those exposures.

The last confirmed measles death in the United States was reported in 2003. More information about measles nationwide is available on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website.

The Department of Health website (doh.wa.gov) is your source for a healthy dose of information. Also, find us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter.

This woman died from measles. That's one in 318.9 million people. She was the first to die in 12 years. While it's sad that she died, I see no reason to freak out. 3,287 people die, on average, each day in car wrecks. That's 15,600,000 in the same time frame. Riding in a car seems more dangerous than measles.

Mea culpa, I posted numbers for worldwide deaths. US deaths from car crashes are only 37,000.

But it's accurate.

I wouldn't be too sure. My friend's dad is a doctor. He was sent home to die after multiple surgeries and chemo treatments failed. He began giving himself large doses of Vitamin C. 3 months later, the cancer was gone. Maybe he was lucky but this doctor credits Vitamin C for his now healthy life.

Simple, do you as a teacher, investigate every fact that you teach?

I make sure that the information I share with my students is accurate. In fact, one of the skills I teach is how to evaluate informational resources. However, I still fail to see why it's important to you whether the vaccines listed on Merck's site originated with them or through purchase. That is what my question to you was.

As for the claim of over 300 vaccines, the quoted report fell short of 300.

Well, the title of the article did say "nearly" 300 as opposed to "exactly 300," and after a quick count, there were about 275. Close enough to make the original poster's point that there are many, many vaccines in the pipeline. Now, how many of them will actually come to fruition is a completely different matter.

But I have a choice to get in a car or not. I don't have a choice about being exposed to a unvaxed little germmonger.

I have always felt that if you chose not to vaccinate your child, then you also take on the duty of educating them. You shouldn't be putting other children at risk because of your beliefs. Nobody is telling you that you have to vaccinate, they are just telling you that if you don't it is then up to you to find a way to educate your child outside of a school setting. This I can agree with,

So vitamin c cures cancer now...haha. Don't tell an antivaxx. This all reminds me of the boy in Canada that died of strep because the mother only believed in holistic medicine. The mother never brought him to the doctors

I am among the first to compare the relative danger of a given action to how dangerous cars are. I mean seriously, driving is dangerous! You know what's more dangerous? Driving without proper restraint systems. Our vehicular death toll would be a lot higher without seat belt laws. You know what would be even more dangerous? Driving without "rules of the road". Think how dangerous driving would be if there were no speed limits, or stop signs, or crosswalks!!!

Your comparison of the death of one woman in twelve years is improper for this very reason. Most people are vaccinated, like most people buckle-up and follow the rules of the road. Now imagine the death toll if 90+% of the population wasn't vaccinated.

It's about prevention.

We take a road test before licensing, drive defensively, wear seat belts, use car seats, etc. in order to protect ourselves when driving, because it is a known, risky behavior.

Why would you choose not to prevent a dangerous disease when an overwhelmingly safe and effective vaccine is available? Measles, among other diseases, has consequences besides death, by the way. I think this generation's unfamiliarity with common childhood diseases and their sometimes devastating effects is working against us.

I hope we don't have to live through earlier times when those effects were a reality before we learn our lesson.

And your car death statistic is incorrect, according to Insurance Inst. for Highway Safety, for all of 2013, there were about 33,000 deaths for the year, or about 90 per day. iihs.org

Good for him. Doubtful for others.

300+ vaccines in development does not equal 300 vaccines going to the market. There are whole sectors of pharm that just do R&D on vaccines, just because they are developing it doesn't mean it will ever work.

I believe you stated in one of your posts the non vax people could go to private schools and no, that isn't the case in CA with this bill passing.

Also, no schools were impacted in the Disney measles event. No schools were closed and many of the measles cases were in adults and vaccinated. A couple were babies too young for school. This bill is in existence to preempt any outbreaks within schools. Therefore, teachers should be up to date on vaccinations, no?

I don't understand why people are only talking about having children vaccinated when there are outbreaks within the adult population where adults should be fully vaccinated (hockey players with mumps, for example). And the measles where 59% were adults 20 or older. 5-19 year olds made up a mere 18%).

Perhaps you can point to where I said parents could shift to a private school to avoid the law.

Also, the law wasn't just about the Disneyland cases. In recent years there have been a number of well documented measles outbreaks that centered around schools. In these cases, it was the kids passing it around.

As I said before, I want the compliance to be in the adult population as well after reading the statistics. I had no idea of all of these outbreaks in the adult population before I began sifting through the information.
Knowing historicaly what a big advocate for vaccinations you are, I have no doubt you feel this way! You've been a big champion for their use.
