Bed Bugs?

Who has encountered them, where, and how did Disney handle it?

I had a traumatizing experience once and it's honestly something that worries me. I am trying not to, even telling others they shouldn't but I guess I need more reassurance myself! :rolleyes1

No experience with bed bugs in WDW... But I know it happens in the best hotels...

My best friend got them at home once (from a neighbour) ... She's never been the same. Most people who got them once will fear another encounter.

Learning from her experience and reading info, now I don't put my stuff in a hotel room before all the mattresses and even drawers are checked.

I've visited dozens of hotels (4 in WDW so far) and I've been lucky so far.

Haven't had them at Disney but ran into them once at a nice resort in Mexico. Nasty bites on my legs and finally caught one in the act. Important thing is how you deal with your return home. I bought a bunch of garbage bags before we left Mexico. Double wrapped and taped my bags so as not to spread it on the plane. Thoroughly combed and shook out our clothes before traveling. At home left luggage in trunk opened up and car outside in winter weather. As soon as we got inside all clothes, everything went into garbage bags that also went into car trunk. Left it all out side for 5 days in freezing weather. No more bed bugs. If it was not winter I would have simply tossed it all in the trash well before it was near our house and changed into newly bought clothes. No reason to bring em home.

We are 99% sure we encountered them at the Polynesian in May 2013. By day three I had bites in series of three on my arms and legs. On our check out morning, they appeared on my husband. My DD was sleeping in a crib we had delivered from a 3rd party with bedding I brought from home- she never manifested any bites. It didn't dawn on me until our last night there that it could be bed bugs. I did some research, and everything pointed to bed bugs. I told Disney the following day. I heard back in about a week- they told me the room tested negative for bed bugs, but they sent me a check for two nights.

I'm not saying Disney would lie, but who knows. I'm pretty sure they were BB.

Never ran into them luckly but read a thread here before where someone did at Disney
I recall them saying they took all their cloths and washed them, gave them a new room, maybe had them pick out an outfit at the resort
Def said everything came back shrunk from the hot water and heat though

I have stayed at CSR, ASM, POP, POLY, POR, and WL and have never seen or had any bedbugs :confused3

I have not. I tear every hotel room apart before we set our stuff down and have never found any in any hotel in any state. DH works in the mattress business so he knows what to look for and knows the damage they can do. Nevertheless, I am terrified of them.

so how did you deal with the outbreak in your home? (as if these were bb's vs say -- sand fleas) youwould have brought them home too.

Stayed at just about every Disney resort and never encountered bed bugs. We don't even check.

However, with your concerns, I would recommend you check the room, especially the mattresses. If you find any, immediately return to the front desk and report it. Disney will take care of the issue and you will be moved to another room.

Bed bugs are not something Disney takes lightly and will do everything in their power to make the guest happy.

I just listened to a Disney podcast where a listener from here in Canada stayed at the CBR over Christmas last year. In her experience, she and her husband woke up Christmas morning at 4am and realized they had bedbugs. They contacted the front desk who arranged a new room for them, all their clothes and luggage to be cleaned, took them the the resort gift shop to pick up everything they would need for the day- clothes etc. When they returned that day after being in the parks, they were in a new room with everything they had with them there and cleaned. They also got a room credit. She described what is normally an aweful discovery, as something the Disney handled extremely well and she said she would have no problem staying there again.

On a personal note, I have never encountered bed bugs on any of WDW trips and ironically, we are staying at CBR in December without any concern.

This is so reassuring! Thanks everyone!
I do know to look for them and what to do if I encounter them. I just need that Disney acts too and it sounds like they will!

No- I threw away our suitcases and wrapped our clothes in big ziplock bags and garbage bags. Our suitcases never came into the house and neither did our clothes since our w&d was in our garage. I washed everything on hot, then dried on sanitize. I checked our suitcases before leaving and didn't see anything, but they were kept on luggage racks in the closet- never on the bed or the floor.

I had them in a room at Pop and I was not thrilled with the response at all. They offered to move my room, but not launder my clothing or treat my luggage. I ended up washing my own clothes and just bundling my luggage in plastic trash bags when I got home until I could spray it down with chemicals. However, I received exceptionally poor customer service at every turn on that particular trip, and I'd like to think it's not the norm.

I take a powerful but skinny flashlight with me and do a 5-10 minute bedbug hunt before settling into our room. Once I give the ok to the family then we unpack. Never found them yet but I am still concerned about them.

I had horrible dreams last night about bed bugs after reading this thread. In my dream, I was traveling with a large group of family and friends and we were at a hotel (not at Disney) when we encountered bed bugs. I had bites on my legs the size of balloons. I kept telling everyone what we needed to do continually insisting, "This is not how Disney would handle it" and "I know what to do, because I read about it on the Dis". Nobody was listening to me and the bedbugs were getting spread all over the place. It was awful in my dream, but pretty funny now that I'm awake.

I wonder if this is a sign that I have been spending way too much time on the Dis!

Where in the room do you check? What are you looking for? I'm going to stick a flashlight in my carryon and do the same thing.

I have stayed in the Poly, Beach Club, Grand Floridian, Kidani Villas & Bay Lake Villas. No bedbugs. At every stay I did check very thoroughly prior to unpacking. Especially the mattress seams. I also brought a mini but very bright LED flashlight to look behind the headboards & other dark areas. This dateline video about bedbugs was very helpful to me and showed how to check & what the bugs actually look like:

DS had terrible bed bug bites last August POFQ, then we moved to two rooms at POR (split stay). I told onsite POFQ front desk manager (not the dial zero get some call center - I personally knew one of the managers by name because of computer glitches in our reservation we had spent some time with her).

Anyway, the response was - and I kid you not: "Hmmmm. We don't usually have a problem with bed bugs. Thanks for letting us know." I even offered to email photos, and tried to impress on them that DS likely brought them with us from pofq to POR. They just had no interest at all.
