What is a Mom to wear in the summer?

So I am trying to plan for our summer trip and am wondering what type of apparel is appropriate for the summer season? I know it is going to be hotter than heck and I will not get by in my usual jean capris :) I'm assuming I'll take a few sundresses... but shorts wise, what would you recommend?

Thanks in advance!!!

I usually wear longer shorts, ones that hit not too far above the knee. That length looks better on me than shorter shorts, plus I like having a little something more between me and the ride seats. I always pick a thinner cotton fabric so it's a little cooler.

I buy shorts from Old Navy. I like their length options and I like the weight of the khaki that they have. I do wish they had denim shorts in some longer options.

I am not one to wear denim shorts whether I am in WDW or at home. With that said, I bring capris for when we go to dinner but in the parks I like to wear shorts in different colors. I don't wear them very short so you can see my rear, but I don't wear them long either. I found a couple pairs of hiking shorts at Bass Pro Shop a few weeks ago which are made of a fabric that will work perfectly for the parks. I also tend to bring a couple of sundresses for those days when we are not at the parks but when we are walking around DTD or resort hopping.

hehehe thanks for the suggestions, and the laugh :) I'm pretty fit but I am still a Mom so I need to start shopping to find some fashionable shorts! I usually live in sundresses in the summer!

Old Navy shorts! Jeans are a no-no... especially on water rides! You'll never dry off, even in the middle of summer!

Everyone's style choice is different so your length of bottoms will depend on you!

For daytime parks, I like shorts and a tank or short sleeved shirt with walking sandals (tevas.) Since we go back to the resort for an afternoon swim, I always change my outfit for the evening as it gives the daytime outfit a chance to air out so I can wear it another day :thumbsup2 For evenings, I wear a bit nicer shorts/top and my nicer sandals (black danskos.) I will sometimes wear a short skirt in the evening (with boy short undies) or even a nice long summer swishy skirt that is cool feeling and not heavy.

I personally am short...er ;) so I prefer shorter length shorts as long ones make me look squat. I suggest you bring shorts that you do NOT need a belt and are also comfortable, and have pockets (for napkins to wipe the sweat off your brow.) For me, that means cotton shorts with a "band" (elastic but not gathered so if it shows, it is smooth) or cotton/spandex shorts that don't need a belt even if they zip/button on the front. Anything too tight on your waist is not only uncomfortable but also makes you sweat! So I also suggest nothing too high-waisted and in colors that won't show dirt or smudges and that can be worn a couple of times - like light denim colored or light patterns or darker colors (but these can attract heat so beware).

As for tops, make sure you don't have to fiddle with them to keep your bra covered but you don't want them so tight that it restricts airflow and then your sweat shows through. Sometimes taking your shirt and waving it against yourself can make a world of difference in the summer

But my best suggestion is to go early and late to the parks and in the blistering heat, go to the pool, the watermarks, or indoor attractions!

I've worn sundresses before but found that I was always trying to make sure they didn't blow up (not "blow up", but blow....up!) I've found something else that I love wearing in the parks.... "Whatever Skorts" by Athleta. The fabric is comfy and dries quickly. I also just ordered the "Wherever Skort" which is fabulous. It's the light feeling of a skirt, but the comfort of the built in shorts is much better than a sundress in my opinion. Leaving in less than 2 weeks for a quick trip and will be taking my skorts by Athleta.

As much as I love them, Disney in the summer is not the place for jean capris. We were there last August and it was HOT. I loved it. ;) The family only complained a wee bit (insert sarcasm).

I wore tee shirts, tanks and shorts. Not short shorts, as they creep up when you are seated. After all, I am 44. But, I wore khaki shorts most days.

Have a great trip!

Get bodyglide and wear whatever you want! I am generally against denim in the summer, not because it's too hot, but because if it gets wet then it never dries.

I have worn khaki shorts, khaki skirts, cotton skirts, sundresses. Anything I feel like I can move well in and not get hot.

Where did you buy them? I saw them on Amazon but I have no idea if I'd be small or medium or if it even looked good on me. I'd have to try them on. They look cute and I like that they are light weight, but I have but sometimes cute on the hanger doesn't equal cute on me. :rotfl:

+1 on all of this. I am short and long shorts or capris look ridiculous on me. My shorts are definitely on the shorter side but not so-short-the-pockets-are-sticking-out-below-the-hem short. I love Ann Taylor's basic shorts. They come in 4 million colors and are a perfect length and weight. I mix in a few Disney t-shirts with other light cotton tees, and I am all set. No dark tops, but I avoid white as well, in case water rides are involved. No wet t-shirt contests at WDW!

I am a HUGE Athleta fan!!! Love their skorts and I have both of the ones you mentioned as well as others. I also love their sundresses and tops - many of which have built in bras. I find the older I get the more I gravitate toward these things as my fav go to summer items. As far as shorts, I prefer the longer (Bermuda) length.

I'm loving all of the suggestions, thank you!
The discussion made me realize that I have a few golf skirts that may work as well. They are breathable skorts and I purchased them at TJ Maxx over the years :)

I like lighter capris (khakis, etc.) and occasionally shorts, but not normally. I have worn denim capris when it was hot and I wasn't miserable.

I just started thinking about my wardrobe this week. I'm thinking cotton capris, a few pairs of shorts (longer length) and a few long dresses. That's my normal wardrobe during the harsh Texas summers. I always steer clear of jeans in the Summer since it's usually 100 plus degrees here. I think with the humid conditions in Orlando, I will stick with the same approah for vacation.

I never wear jeans in the summer here. I'm thinking I will wear light weight Capris on the plane but I know they will be too hot for the parks. I have shorts of different lengths, but I've found that even at DLR I get too hot in long shorts. So I can only imagine it will be worse at WDW. I think I need to go shopping soon.
