Sure signs of not planning

I actually overheard this while waiting for rope drop:
"Okay kids, when the gates open look for a map"

I've actually known a few people who decide they want to see a movie and just show up at the theater to see if anything playing looks appealing to them.

Some people are just wired that way.

That's usually what we do at the movies. If something good is showing soon we will watch and if not we leave. No big deal. Although we never make a special trip to the theater but occasionally stop in to see if we are driving by.

I don't know why it surprises anyone that a lot of people don't plan their Disney trip. Most people have no idea what all is involved. I just don't understand the need to look down on anyone who doesn't share the knowledge of Disney World that I do.

A lot of people are not planners. Nothing wrong with that. I went on a snowmobiling trip with my dad and brother once (who couldn't make a plan if their lives depended on it) and we got in the car and started driving with no idea even where we were going and managed to have a blast. Not everything has to be planned down in detail and people like my dad and brother would be miserable on a schedule and having to research a Disney trip.

Despite what everyone on here thinks people can not plan Disney and have fun. Keep in mind that to most people its not an multiple time a year thing and there is much fun to be had without adr's and fast passes. And its perfectly okay for people not to like it as well...

Ageed. Dh and I are planners by nature and have an idea of what we want to do at each park each day, but we are not tied to a schedule. We don't do ts and adrs for this reason. Have not made a rope drop yet.

We would be the ones getting a map on the way in.

Last trip, the 4 kids were ages 7 to 15. Half way into the trip one afternoon we could not budge them from naps to go back out to a park.. they were exhausted!

We plan but allow for flexibility, otherwise it wouldn't be a relaxing vacation for us.

Not everyone is a planner, you are right. And I don't care if you don't plan. It just drives me nuts when someone who didn't plan comes home and says they had an awful trip and gives me crap about going to Disney again.

I don't think it surprises anyone, I think this thread was meant to be humorous. I certainly hope it has not offended anyone. There is another side of the spectrum. I am sure a "signs you over plan your Disney trip" would be humorous and maybe in better taste since it is more self deprecating. I know I certainly fall in the over planning category, but that is just how I am.

I don't think anyone has any ill will towards the non planners.

Agreed.:thumbsup2 I think many, many people go with no "plan" and have a spectacular time.
It's not a cheap destination. I wouldn't go anywhere and not have just a basic knowledge of what's available to me. That I don't get.

Particularly if they refuse or ignore advice beforehand.

This. You can still do research without actually planning.

As I said on another thread, I PLAN! And yet, WDW is so extensive that I have a feeling that even though I've been planning for 2 years... reading here, reading Disney's site, reading Disney's blog, reading other sites, etc... I still feel like I'm going to get caught off guard by something that could potentially ruin our vacation. I'm sure there are people out there who go to WDW without planning, but I'm sure there are also many others who DO plan but don't even know where to start their research because there's SO MUCH to research and therefore, they miss something important and then get slammed on this site by people telling stories of tourists they encountered at the parks because they said/did something stupid that "if they'd planned, they would've known better."

We plan a little (when I say we, I really mean me lol) when we go but there is still a lot of flexibility. I make ADR's based on the crowd level for that day but we usually go back to the room halfway through and relax. Sometimes, we even cancel ADR's if we aren't in the mood to go back that soon or to that park. Having the park hoppers builds in a lot of flexibility.

The things that have been mentioned on this thread could have all been prevented by planning. With 20 minutes of planning you could learn what times to go to avoid crowds, that Universal and Disney are two separate parks, and that if you want to guarantee being able to eat at TS restaurants you should make ADRs(which are the main 3 things that have been talked about). This thread was meant to be funny, I think some people need to learn not to be so sensitive.

exactly

You try to sell your mom the idea that scheduled bathroom breaks are a necessity. :rolleyes1

:rotfl2:

You time your family slowly strolling while mapping it on your phone to get a good walkin speed average then use a separate ap to calculate the distance between rides so you can calculated expected walking times.

In the words of my mom "who does that!"

.... people don't actually do that though, right?? *slightly scared*

I've been going to WDW for 30 years now. I do plan..what I plan is when I'm going to Florida, that I'm going to WDW and that's pretty much it. I don't even know what park I'm going to until the morning after I've had breakfast. I do check and make sure that I don't go to an EMH park for the day, but, otherwise notta! I know all about Rope Drop, FP's, ADR's, etc. But I don't care, I refuse to be tied down to some schedule.

Probably because I have been so many times, I have always done what I wanted to do and those that I couldn't become part of the list for next time. I do strongly feel that for most people, the idea that one has to "plan" to go to a theme park is foreign at best. It just isn't a natural thing to do. They have seen the promotional spots on TV, and nothing about that tells them that they have to plan 180 days ahead. It comes as a surprise to them. Do their homework? Why should they think that they have to do homework to visit a theme park. It's just veterans that feel superior to them because we know.;)
