Thanks for your reply. I called back and after dealing with 4 different people, was able to secure our original preferred room at POR. They offered us a cabin at FW and said they had no availability for 5 anywhere else. I declined and I'm not so sure that I believe that line.
Finally, Guest Services was able to give us a room that they had access to secure but the regular phone agent did not.Now, I'm still a little nervous, as I did online check-in with the messed up booking, so we'll see what happens at arrival.
Also, to answer your question, no, no one offered at any time to refund our preferred rate. I was told to show up and "maybe they could get us close to a preferred room." When I said that was unacceptable, I was told the actual hotel staff would have to deal with it. I'm sure they'd be thrilled at POR to hear that buck passed.
