Ever had to cancel a vacation? UPDATE pg 6

Man I am just so sad right now. We are exactly 8 weeks and 3 days away from our WDW vacation...a vacation we've been planning for over two years. We haven't had a vacation at all in over two years. In fact, we haven't had a day off (small business owners). I found out some stuff today relating to our business that is going to put a SIZABLE dent in our income right at the start of September, and we are seriously considering calling off the trip. Oddly, this was essentially one of those infamous DIS "gift trips" (kind of...we were GIVEN a butt-load of DVC points by DH's uncle to cover our resort stay so no cost there). We have been diligently saving up for this much anticipated and desperately needed trip. We JUST bought our park tix two weeks ago and were about to place the order for our MNSSHP tickets. Thank God we didn't do it yet. We figured the rest of the trip would run us about $700.

I'm so sad and tired. I needed this. It's all I've been talking about for two years. I'm close to tears as I type this and poor DH is just dazed. There is a chance the business won't take the hit I think is coming, but I can't rely on that. I'll know more tomorrow when I talk to one of our clients. I'm just trying to prepare myself for it.

On top of that, we have mounting medical bills, business related bills, etc all which would have been fine were we not about to take this financial hit. DH is having knee surgery Monday, and he may need to be on crutches after for 6 weeks. With the trip 8 weeks away that would only give him 2 weeks crutch-free to prep for the trip on his repaired knee.

I'm sure others must've been in the same boat? With so many folks laid off and the economy what it is. Anyone who can commiserate with me? :guilty:

Our heating & cooling unit has the nickname 'Washington DC' because our old one died as we were planning the trip so guess where the money came from?

I had a dream trip sched for Dec 2008 -- Grand Floridian on a 40% off pin, great ideas for meals, family activities, great weather scheduled...

and then a job change that entailed a 1,000 mile move out of Florida, had to sell the house (in 2008, after the crash!), find a new house and work up the move, financing, new insurance, etc.

Changing schools, changing vehicle registrations, changing driver licenses...!!!

So I cancelled. It sucked. Only one trip since then, and thankfully it was on a FD pin.

So, yeah, I've had to cancel... :headache:

We had a Disney trip planned and half pis for over this Thanksgiving. We were all super excited, and my dh was let go from his job at the beginning of June, and has yet to have any decent leads do a new job. I'm a sahm, and haven't had any luck getting back in the workforce....we cancelled. We are hoping to be ale to go during Spring break this coming year.

Since you are saying you may not take the hit any chance you can postpone it if you don't. That way you cancel now but have something to look forward to later.
BUT yes we have had to cancel many trips...mostly home to visit family.

We can save the park tix to use for another time, and the DVC points...well I don't know how that works.

We had to cancel our trip in 2010, it was a one bedroom villa at the Boardwalk and was fully paid for. That is my dream place to stay and I was so looking forward to that trip. We are finally going back next month for the first time since cancelling and staying at ASMo, not the BWV but I will take what I can get.

It sucks, but we have to do what we have to do.

I have and I was crushed. I am HOPING that I can go this fall. There is an AP code and a quick 3 day trip would be fantastic. If not, well, I will have to cancel. I will cry. Seriously. I know that I need to just get over it. But we got married and had no honeymoon, no one night away, nothing.

Anyway, Just a thought but you already have a room and tickets. Why not make breakfast and dinner in the room. Only eat counter service in the parks. You have a full kitchen in the DVC room so it is doable. it will take some planning but would significantly drop the cost of your trip.

We were staying in a studio, and we had planned to eat breakfast in the room each day...also we have to pay employees to watch the business while we are away.

So very sorry. This economy just is beating the daylights out of people.

Tickets are paid for, room is paid for, just eating expenses are remaining? What about travel to/from? Can you look at the estimated remaining vacation budget of $700 and slash it further making it do-able by making meals in the room (if it is a one or two bedroom unit, it comes with a full kitchen) and not doing the Halloween party?

I feel ya. I've had to cancel twice since 2008. This will be our first trip since 2007 and we cannot wait!

I hope somehow you all will be able to go on your trip!

I'm sorry Jenn. :( If you have to end up canceling, that just all around sucks.

Honestly_i wouldnt do it after that surgery anyway/ I pulled a muscle in the Fall and had to completely stop lifting weights for 6 months-i kept thinking after a month it would be better .
Cant imagine walking miles a day after knee surgery

I'll have a better idea tomorrow if we need to cancel. Essentially we may be losing some key clients. I'm going to speak with one of them tomorrow and hopefully get a straight answer from them about their intentions.

We were driving.

Here's hoping for some better news tomorrow. pixiedust: (A little pixiedust never hurt anyone)

So sorry to hear this, OP. I wish you a day of good news tomorrow after you speak to your client. :goodvibes

We had to cancel last summer's 2 week WDW trip 5 days before arrival due to hubby being admitted to emergency and in hospital for 4.5 days due to being diagnosed with Crohn's.

It was a hellish week as hubby was separated from kids, and I spent most time at the hospital, so we were exhausted, and hubby went through a zillion medical tests and procedures to arrive at his diagnosis.

We cancelled by calling DVC Member Services and they took care of everything for us. By far the biggest thing they did was give us back all of our points, and ship back packages we had sent to the resort for free. They also cancelled our dining reservations too, and sent us emails inquiring about my husband's health.

Even though we go several weeks per year, it was a shock to have to cancel so suddenly as we were all packed, etc., and we were exhausted from the week we had.

We had our makeup trip at Christmas/NYE, and it was fabulous, especially since hubby's health has drastically improved.

I wish you luck in making these hard decisions. We didn't lose any money whatsoever in cancelling, but would have lost 350 points, if DVC wasn't so generous in giving us back our points.

It seems as if you have some stress to work through, and I wish you and your hubby strength in doing so.

Disney will be there for you, if you decide to cancel, at a later time! Tiger
