Beats me, you went back and changed your OP.

:-)

Actually, I read the whole original first post, and nothing has been deleted. He only added the disclaimer so that hopefully people would know that most of it was said tongue-in-cheek.

Yeah, I saw nothing in the OP to indicate it was tongue-in-cheek. It sounded like cyncism from someone who had lost patience with new comers.

Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit and there is much truth said in jest.

If I were one of those who had posted, "Can my little Johnny wear shorts to dinner?" or some other question that is mocked in this thread, I would be inclined to never post again....even if this thread is tongue in cheek.

I agree:thumbsup2 I hope the OP doesn't put anybody off from asking questions

wow...I never knew I wielded so much POWER!

Once I perfect the freeze ray, I will RULE THE WORLD!!! laughs sinisterly...

Hey everyone...Lighten up...this is a message board concerning cruising, not the cure for cancer.

If you "got it" (meaning intent of OP)...you're welcome.

If not, Accept my apology if offended.

There, does that cover everyone?

Hope you all have a wonderful day. HAPPY CRUISING no matter which cruise line you choose, or which itinerary you choose, or if you choose early dining or late dining, or if you bring your own or buy from ship bar, or if you smoke on the verandah or hide in the smoke stack to smoke, or if you buy art on the ship, or if you stay in orlando or if you stay in Cocoa, or if you eat at palos every meal, or you fish from the boat and catch your own and grill it on your verandah using MV navigators purchased ebay as firewood, or if you stay on the boat in nausea or you go to the atlantis, or you choose to ride the aqua duck dressed in a pirate or princess costume, or you don't like it because it blocks the sun in your deck chair that you've reserved the whole cruise by placing a magazine on, or you swim in the tiny pools, or...enough of this...got to get to work.

OMG -- it was a JOKE. A JOKE. Cynical or not, it was a JOKE. I found the humor. Many of y'all got it and joined in on the JOKE. But many of you took it way too personal. Come on Dissers -- where is that sense of humor. Really, not every thread requires an analysis of the OPs underlying message or that the OP is trying to scare newbies or deter question askers. I never thought for once that the OP was "mocking" anyone!

Ahhhh, humor is lost on some people :lmao: :happytv::rolleyes::sad2:

Humor using only the written word is difficult. Clearly the original OP was not viewed as a joke or the original poster would not have had to go back to clairify. Humor at someone else's expense is seldom funny to me...YMMV.

I've seen this same type of thread numerous times on various internet forums and the 'old timers' find it amusing but the humor is lost on the person who had just posted one of the FAQs.

"But other than that Mrs Lincoln, what did you think of the play?! Hahaha? What?! It was a JOKE! I Joke! Geesh, some people have no sense of humor!"

But why I would use Search if asking questions is easier :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

:lmao:

wow... funny stuff.. I am a newbie to the Cruise line forums, but not to DIS... this will be my first DCL cruise.. (well not really , I went on one of them in 2000 but with my inlaws and we didn't have kids then so I really wasn't paying attention - or paying for it)
but I know I will have tons of dumb questions.. BUT I totally get the humor here.. :thumbsup2 too funny.. now, really.. can my boys wear shorts to dinner?? :confused3:rotfl:;)

Love it!!

I have no problem at all if anyone here wants to roll their eyes or make fun of my question or laugh because it's been asked a gajillion times, because I can certainly laugh at myself as well and this isn't brain surgery.

If someone new is too intimidated to post because a veteran poster makes a joke, then someone is taking life too seriously.

And if "sarcasm is the lowest form of wit", then I live my life pretty low. But I have a good time in the process.

Carry on. In the words of Sargent Hulka, "Lighten up, Francis."

Why is sarcasm the lowest form of wit? Not everyone agrees but here are some opines....

Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit since its aim is to belittle or hurt someone, and to laugh at their expense; we associate the word "cutting" with it. On the other hand, true wit associates with the word "levity", and boosts everyone's spirits, being aimed at an action, a happening or an attitude.
Mary Purnell, Revesby

Because intellectuals said so, and when were they ever wrong?
Norm Neill, Leichhardt

It's not. Perhaps you are as deliberately confused as the great Frank Muir on an old BBC episode of My Word, who wound up a typically long-winded anecdote with the phrase "the bun is the lowest form of wheat". Geddit?
John Amy, Blakehurst

I tend to think that wit is the highest form of sarcasm.
Daniel Pericart, Cooranbong

Sarcasm has never been and cannot be a form of wit. Punning is the lowest form of wit and always will be.
John Currie, St. Ives

Sarcasm is said to be a low form of humour as its intent is generally to get laughs at someone else's expense. The pointed humour may not be funny to the victim but its funny to those who understand the barb as it feeds their intellectual egos. This is because sarcasm is a form of humour that is known to require the highest functions of our brains. Areas of the brain that decipher sarcasm and irony also process language, recognise emotions and help understand social cues. Sarcasm is related to our ability to understand other people's mental state so it's not just a linguistic form, it's also related to social cognition.
David Buley, Seaforth

Because it is only marginally better than being witless.
Vikram Karekatte, North Sydney

Because it is the form commonly employed by politicians.
Hugo Stiegl, Dora Creek

Sarcasm is scornful, contemptuous and taunting, hence it is rightfully the lowest form of wit.
Premila Singh, Strathfield

You'd have to be a bloody genius to know that!
Linda Forbes, Collaroy Plateau

Because it requires very little brain power to be sarcastic? puns or other 'true' jokes for example, actually need some sort of a sense of humour, intelligence and/or wit.
Karina L., Kingsgrove

Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit only to those who have never mastered the art, and those who always fall victim to it.
Adam Pemberton, Sylvania

If you have to ask,you wouldn't understand!
Karlheinz Kunkel, Oatley

The lowest form of wit is reputedly the pun - or as some wag said, "The bun is the lowest form of wheat".
Gary Whale, Yamba

Sarcasm is generally negative, and tends to hurt, which places it on the lowest rung of the humour ladder. For example, "He thinks he's a wit, but he's only half right."
Sandy Parkinson, Hilton WA

Recent research at the University of Haifa claims that sarcasm is a complex high order skill needing an ability to understand other peoples state of mind and emotions. Its low because it targets chiefly the sensitive, inarticulate, unsophisticated and powerless.
Paul Roberts, Lake Cathie

Great question! I've wondered the same myself, because you need to be bordering on genius to be able to apply it in just about any given situation.
Luke O'Dwyer, Banksia

"Why is sarcasm the lowest form of wit?" Like you'd get anything more sophistricated...
Madeline Palmer, Kualal Lumpur

Because it is only marginally better than being witless.
Vikram Karekatte, North Sydney

okay, i'm a big geek :cheer2: but the first time I found these discussion boards the first thing I did was start at the last page of threads and work my way back to the first page, reading EVERYTHING! :surfweb: It was fun and got me all excited for my cruise :cool1:

From the DIS Posting Guideline/Rule #4:

http://www.wdwinfo.com/guidelines.htm

4. No Fighting/Sarcasm. While we'd like to think that a Disney fan site is always lighthearted, there are times when there are disagreements. Let's face it, there are certain topics that can transform any of us into a raging "Donald Duck." When you sense this is happening, we ask that you step away from the discussion before it escalates into a fight. Just like Mom always said about fighting, we don't care who started the argument and we don't want it on the DIS. (Okay, she didn't say the part about the DIS, but you know what we mean.) No attacking others and no sarcasm please. Either will result in an infraction.

I see both sides of this. I understood that the original post was in jest and it even made fun of some of my past posts. I took it in stride, but I also know from reading other threads that some readers are not out to get into debates about DCL, but simply want to be able to ask questions on a friendly board without fear of being chastised for asking the question in the first place.

I think for the most part that these boards are quite friendly and I like to see a little humor now and then. And I still find it quite humorous that this thread was supposedly started after the OP saw yet another thread about "Is Disney worth the extra cost" and such thread was actually a thread started 8 months ago without any activity during such time and was most likely resurrected after being found by someone through the Search feature that the OP wanted others to use. :rolleyes1

I'm fairly new here and have a stupid question:

Why not have more "subforums" under the DCL forum for grouping of major and minor topics headings ... it seems a little nuts for everything to be jumbled together and 60 pages of threads.

wow...I never knew I wielded so much POWER!

wow:scared1: switch to decaf dude... Not to worry I'll continue to ask dumb questions.

Even if "sarcasm is the lowest form of wit", it still is wit.

I like that the disers can answer even my dumbest questions, but I also like to go on here and read funny threads and posts--it makes it more of a community for me and makes me appreciate those I meet on Disney more and from there I get warm and fuzzy feelings about my trip too.

If there's a post on here that doesn't fit my needs or style I skip it. I don't go on there and tell the person I think their post was stupid or inappropriate. I think those that keep going on posts that make them angry and continue reading it are just shoving broken glass into their eyes over and over (too dramatic?) maybe death by a thousand papercuts then? Again I liked the post and thought it was a good chance to laugh at ourselves.

I'm such a drama llama (wait-does it count if I call myself a drama llama?)

I LIKE irony...;)

I'd like to take a DCL cruise with only Andy Griffith fans.

When are we going? But first, can you tell me if I should take a rental car to the port, and if I should drop my bags off first, then the car, or drop my car off first, then my bags, or drop my wife off first, then my car, then the bags?:confused3

LOL....just alittle sarcasm to get through a miserable winter day...:thumbsup2

What I find interesting is that the Disboards camping forum recently banned and gave LOTS of points to regular long time posters for not be welcoming and for not "playing nice". According to the explanation provided, there have been many posters who have complained as of late that it has been a less than welcoming experience to participate in the forum. Appears there were too many inside jokes made at the expense of new comers asking what some perceived to be questions that were easily answered by using the search feature.
Sound familiar?....:confused3

I don't post here often, but I am researching the DCL. I have found most of this forum to be incredibly helpful. You guys REALLY know your stuff. :thumbsup2 That being said, while the intent of this thread may have been an attempt at humor... it was less than welcoming to anyone reading for the first time.
Joke....or not. Really...if you find a question irritating, then don't answer it.
Why poke fun at someone else's expense. Seems kind of silly.

I'm just sayin'.....:rolleyes1

Bolded: there is the point... it's laughing at OURSELVES, not others. We've all been there at one point in time asking a question that I'm sure made others go arghhh and roll their eyes and think oh no, not again... Search doesn't always work so great on here btw. LOL
We are family here.
It's the DIS-family. It is not us/you or us/them. welcome to the family everyone! (and just like family- you won't always like all your Dis-relatives LOL)

Oh and it counts. It so counts.

It does get frustrating trying to search these posts but sometimes when we see the same questions over and over again that also can be monotonous. As other posters have said just don't read them if it bothers you and move on, no need to hurt peoples feelings, particularly the new people.

Just to clarify.
you quoted ME and then said that at the end? it doesn't bother me.
I may have bothered others because I'm quite sure I've asked questions that surely have been asked before, and because search doesn't always work for me. that's ME probably bothering OTHERS. But it definitely does not bother me if others ask questions that have been asked a bazillion times. I know search doesn't work well and I'm always happy to be able to answer others questions if I can. :)
