Homemade Holiday Presents! Lets help each other! Ideas WANTED!

I've decided to make home made dog cookies and bird seed cut outs for our friends and family..

Dog cookies
2 1/2 cup flour
3/4 cup dry milk powder
1/2 cup veggie oil
2 tbs brown sugar
2 veggie bouillion cubes disolved in 3/4 cup boiling water
1/2 cup chopped carrots
1 egg

Preheat oven to 300 degrees, Mix all ingredients into a ball and roll out to about 1/4 inch think. Cut with cookie cutter (dog bone shape is cute :lovestruc ) and place on ungreased cookie sheet. bake for 30 mins

Bird Seed Cut outs
3/4 cup flour
1/2 cup water
3 tbls corn syrup
4 cups any type of bird seed

in large bowl mix all ingredients into a ball and roll out to desired thickness on a sheet of wax paper. Cut into round cookie shapes and make a small hole in each for the hanger. Let dry 4-6 hours or over night make sure to turn often so both sides dry. use a piecs of yarn for hangers the next day and hang in trees..

Any idea how long the cookies will last? The girls would have fun making these for grandma's dogs but I don't want to make them too far in advance. Any storage tips? Ie do they have been kept in an air tight container?

For teachers I prepare a meal for them for the last day before christmas break. It is usually a half day and the teachers are swamped. This way when they get home they don't have to cook. I make it simple, I cook something that makes alot like jambalaya, spaghetti, or chicken rotel. I include a side salad or dessert and bread. It costs me around 75 to 100 dollars for everything. That takes care of around 10 teachers, aides, or other staff that help my children. I use containers from the dollar tree and buy in bulk and separate. Dessert could be cup cakes which are the cheapest around 2 dollars for 2 to 3 families. For me spaghetti is the cheapest and I usually have plenty left for my family and some for the freezer. You can do this for family members as well. I love it when someone cooks for me and I'm glad to return the containers. My friends and I do a coupon book for each other. I give away 6 haircuts a year and 6 hours of child care. They give me meals, child care, or run errands. I love it you always stay in touch even when you are busy.

I love all your ideas! I'm getting alot of tips for gifts,as I have a large circle of people I give to. Thanks to all of you and your ideas! I'll be posting some of my ideas on my day off-I'm just stopping by before heading to work!

I think this is a great idea. I am always worried that people wouldn't want homemade dinners but I guess there is no difference in dinner or homemad cookies.

Here's something special I made for my Grandpa---a scrapbook of my life! Pictures of me from babyhood up to present, included things like newspaper clippings, announcements, flyers, broucheres, etc. I'm not a ""scrappie" and kept putting it off trying to get it "perfect" finally I just did it! I wasn't making it for a grade! It was a real hit with him, he treasured it and it brought back many fond memories, was the basis for many conversations. Grandpa passed away 3 months after I gave him the book, I have it now again.....:sad1: I will pass it on to my children.

My point is, don't wait to be perfect to give a gift from your heart!

My sister is going to be overseas for the next few months, so I was trying to think of something very small that she could take with her to open on Christmas day. My solution was a usb drive loaded with lots of electronic goodies (e-books, christmas music, family photos, downloadable games, a custom crossword, etc.), but the piece de resistance was a home movie pieced together out of short messages from all her friends and family. I just sent emails to everyone and asked them to reply back with a short 20 second Christmas message and then I combined them all using Windows Movie Maker. Everyone had fund with the assignment and I think my sister will really cherish the finished product.

Some other inexpensive presents I've come up with:

Photo Books - you can sometimes get fantastic deals through email from online photo services like Shutterfly and Snapfish for free or reduced price photo books and/or free shipping. Last year I got a code for a free photo book from Shutterfly and combined it with free shipping during a special promotional period. I uploaded photos of my grandmother from various trips she'd taken and created a book for her. It turned out fantastic and was very meaningful.

Photo Cards - If you enjoy photography and have some fantastic photos, print digital copies in bulk and paste them onto blank notecards. Combine a set of 5-10 different photo cards with a similar theme (flowers, places, animals, etc.) to give to friends/family.

Origami ornaments - I've actually seen these elegant origami crane ornaments selling for $10-15 in museum stores, but they're very easy to make. Buy thick patterned origami paper (not the glossy or foil types) and fold into a crane (instructions can easily be found online). Use a long beading needle to punch a whole through the center of the crane's body and thread the crane with a piece of thin satin ribbon (about $1 per roll or less at a craft store). Hang a small crystal from the bottom (large crystals are sometimes sold as part of a piece of trim in the Christmas section of a craft store like Michael's). These ornaments are super fast and easy and they look very elegant covering a small Christmas tree. I make them for my coworkers every year.

I'm probably making themed baskets again this year. I made movie baskets and game night/poker baskets last year. I got the idea to do a sundae basket on another thread for this year. I need some ideas from you guys on what I can put in the baskets and where I can find budget friendly sundae stuff. TIA!

Ice cream scoop, maraschino cherries, sprinkles, hot fudge, caramel topping, cute spoons, sundae cups, cute napkins, waffle bowls.

love the basket idea, I have a container full of free stuff from playing drug store game and I will be doing foot baskets, along with health basket, power bars, hand gels maybe a fitness magazine

THe favorite gift ever was the year I bought planners at the dollar store, put pretty paper over the covers (Under the plastic) and then went through month by month and wrote in everyone's birthdays, anniversaries and other special events. Each "family" got one of these. Closer relatives also got a set of 3x5 cards with everyone's family name, address and phone number on the front, then names and birth dates, anniversaries of each individual family member on the back in a pretty altered file box.

My mom and sisters ALSO got a hand painted tote bag filled with handmade cards, writing paper, envelopes, a pretty pen and stamps!

Everyone loved them!

I used shutterfly.com to make calendars for all the family members w/ pics of all the kids included. I also included all the birthdays and anniversaries on each calendar. I had a couple of coupons, and when all was said and done they were less than $10 a piece.

I also bought the discontinued Disney princess patterns off of ebay. I'm going to make an Ariel mermaid outfit and a Jasmine outfit for my DD4. She'll love them and since she's short I can make them the right length too.

Last year I had DS paint canvas bags for the grandma's and aunts and then add his hand print on the corner of the bag. Inside we did little brag books for the grandmas, added favorite homemade treats!

I make a lot of homemade candy. Then I decorate those cardboard soda/beer bottle holders at the store with scrapbooking paper. Then those homade candies get wrapped and put in the holders! Classy and delicious!

This year I'm taking my sons ripped denim jeans, cutting squares and sewing them into a blanket for DS. The back will be fleece which is beautiful!

I've knit long scarves out of the fancy trellis and ribbon yarns. Those were a hit and right now so inexpensive to make!!
I'm hoping to get my DS into the pottery studio to paint a large platter for his grandma's this year, and he's done wooden projects at lowes that he's giving as gifts.

Sorry I didn't post this sooner... here are a few different ways of making them. If you use more spices than just the cinnamon it smells a bit different, they all smell so good! Also, I wrap mine in baggies to store them and they have smelled good the last 4 or 5 years still!

Recipe #1
1/2 cup cinnamon
1/2 cup store bought applesauce (homemade sauce will likely be too watery)
Or, any equal portions of both ingredients depending on the quantity you desire.

Directions:
Stir together cinnamon and applesauce with a spoon until the dough becomes stiff, then use your hands to create a ball of dough.

Place the ball of dough on a sheet of waxed paper, flatten slightly with your fingers.

Place a second sheet of waxed paper over the top of the dough and roll out dough to about 1/8 inch thick.

Use cookie cutters or your own template shapes.

Air dry creations on a waxed paper-covered cookie sheet or a cooling rack for at least 24 hours until they are completely hard.

Recipe #2
Mix 1 cup cinnamon and 1 cup applesauce with 1 Tablespoon of white glue. You want a consistency that can be rolled with a rolling pin but not quite as sticky or it will stick to your counter! Sprinkle counter with cinnamon and roll out dough and cut with cookie cutters. Cut a hole in shape with the straw so you will be able to hang them. Let dry about 24 hours. They shrink as they dry. Cut lengths of gold thread, make loops and hang. they will keep their scent for a few years. Refresh scent with cinnamon fragrance oil.

Recipe #3
1 cup cinnamon
1 tbsp. ground cloves
1 tbsp. nutmeg
1 tbsp. allspice
1 tbsp ginger
3/4 c. applesauce

In medium bowl, combine cinnamon, cloves, allspice,
ginger & nutmeg. Add applesauce, stir to combine.
Work mixture with hands 2 to 3 minutes or until dough
is smooth and ingredients are thoroughly mixed.
Roll out dough to 1/4 inch thickness.
Cut dough with cookie cutters.
Using straw or pencil, make small hole in top of ornament.
Bake on an ungreased cookie sheet at 150 degrees for 1 hour
Remove from the cookie sheet and bake on the oven
racks for another hour and a half.

Use these ornaments to decorate gifts, hang on tree, etc.

Recipe #4
Combine a 16 oz. jar of applesauce, 8 oz. or more of cinnamon, and 1 oz. of either allspice, nutmeg or cloves (I use allspice).
Combine all ingredients and mix *very* well.
Roll out dough to 1/4" thickness (putting plastic wrap around the rolling pin works well).
Cut out the ornaments .
While dough is still wet, poke a hole in each ornament .
Dry in a 150F oven for about 3 hours, turning halfway through.

Creative tips:
For extra "sparkle," mix in decorative glitter.

Make your own shapes by trimming the dough with a table knife following around patterns you've cut from cereal box cardboard.

After cutting out shapes, use a drinking straw to create holes for jewelry or ornaments.

Use toothpicks to make smaller holes for threading. Leave in dough until dry and remove.

For a wall hanging, thread a colored ribbon through the shape.

For a brooch, decorate with fabric paint and glue a metal clasp pin to the back (available at craft stores).

Decorate creations with acrylic paint or fabric.

The creations can be used as decorations on a gift box or bag.

Important note: Adult supervision and participation is required for this activity.

Just a warning with these, make sure you put them high on a tree we came home last year and our dog had EATEN all of them off the tree :( my girls were crushed.

The dog smelled good for a couple of days though :rolleyes1

thanks for all the great ideas I will keep reading!

Last year I made a set of 4 tile coasters for each person. I stamped them with bible verses for sunday school teachers and friendship sayings for friends. A set of 4 runs about $1.75. I bought tiles at Lowe's, stamped them, and then sprayed with a sealer. Tie the set of 4 together with a big pretty bow. Also tiles can be decopauged (sp?). I printed off copies of favorite pictures of my kids. Paint the tile with modge podge, place pic down, and then one more coat of modge podge. Seal with sealant. EASY< EASY, EASY and way cheap!!

I also made tile coasters last year for my family members. I painted on the initial of each family's last name and then shillacked (sp.?) them. I cut out felt squares and hot glued them on the back. They were cheap and a great gift. However, the painting was a little difficult. Now, my aunt sells uppercaseliving (uppercaseliving.net) where you just transfer on the vinyl lettering.. That would be a lot easier and still cheap.

Also, I made personalized luggage tags. Fortunately, my grandma has an embroidery machine so that was cheap.

This year, I am making the scrabble tile necklaces. They seem pretty easy to make and not very expensive.

For the males in my family, I am making chocolate covered pretzels. I got the mold off eBay and you just use pretzel rods.

Wow - these are some great ideas!

I do have one word of caution for people making food for teachers gifts - many schools do not allow the teachers to consume the food gifts and it ends up being thrown away. This is because of the way the world is today - people do not know what is put into the items. This is probably more true for big schools than smaller ones, but please do check with the school before you send food - it's too much time and money to end up in the garbage!

We went to a pottery studio and painted pottery and then had the kids put their hand prints on them. This was the best "priceless gift" for grand parents and great grand parents. Our potery studio(color me mine) has special nights that there is either low or no setting fee. So this can be very economical depending on what pieces you choose to paint. They even have small orniments or mugs. We did a cookie jar and vase.
